- Emory Professor of Religion and Asian Studies Paul Courtright moderates a discussion of contemporary literature and its social implications in India with University Distinguished Professor Sir Salman Rushdie at the Halle Institute's fifth annual India Summit, February 17, 2014. Rushdie explores the cultural, political and global influences of both current and emerging Indian writers, incorporating his personal experiences as an author.
The 2014 summit presented a wide range of panels and speakers, including Rushdie, Consul General Ajit Kumar, and renowned epidemiologist William Foege. Launched in 2010, this annual event, formerly known as the Emerging India Summit, is the brainchild of a dynamic team of students from across the university. The summit regularly features distinguished business leaders, foreign policy experts, government officials, medical experts, and scholars from a variety of fields.

In India the Law is in English. The Indian Penal Code is in English. And everybody knows it that if you translate the Law you change the Law.

I am at present reading his ' Enchantress of Florence', I am finding it very entertaining.
Every Word he says about India is absolutely true. I wonder how he knows all these things without living in India, and which is most of Indians don't know.

I absolutely agree with him. Things are going in the same way as he was talking about it 6-7 years ago. There's a large proportion of masses that refutes the liberal and secular values of Indian culture. The acceptance of being offended is being inculcated in Indian minds. There are lot of groups, parties and people who tell you every day not to cross the "laxman rekha". It's scary. Yeah, Indians are in cultural crisis. The spectre of Nationalism is roaring high and all other voices are subdued. Tragedy!! This is called.

Fun Fact : Salman Rushdie in his Book - Satanic Versse has not just mocked Islam but also Hinduism. He has used Vulgar slangs to mock Hindu God - Rama and his wife Sita. But the Hindu Community never reacted to it. We never even acknowledged them or didn't care. This is how Liberal and Tolerant we Hindus are. We Indians are Proud of him !!!

Through his books he try to resolve some political or life questions that all.At least he is not like Ayatollah Khomeini who issued fatwas thinking he is the Allah representative on earth.

I think English was always a language learned by adults - even in England, Chaucer's Middle English has the feel of a pidgin learned by Welsh speakers -cutting out all that German grammar to enable a bit of Welsh syntax. So its beautiful mongrel nature give it broad shoulders.

Things people exactly want to hear. As if the world is only defined by a language alone. Writing is only for literate and if they are interested too. Salman speaks well but can not see the things.
