Sadly missing from the audience are young Indians, younger Indians, scruffily-dressed Indians, t-shirted Indians, Indians in short-sleeved shirts . . . but the India Today conclave is always like this: older (and much older) Indians in their best suits and saris and thus representing the country's ruling class(es). Sir Salman have no problem "wasting" his time with such an audience, something that, say, Noam Chomsky, never attracted when he was on a lecture circuit in India and whose talks not only filled college auditoriums but where they had to set up loudspeakers outside the packed auditoriums. This is not to detract from Rushdie's erudition and intelligence.
