- IT'S BACK BABY! Jocko's 1982 Red Toyota Hilux is back and it's about to be better than ever!
The poor girl has been neglected for too long and it's time to complete the restoration to her former glory. From tired old rig to a timeless classic!
Jock's been working on it in his shed for the last year (when he isn't out on trips) - putting in a new engine, fixing up a second hand tub, completely pulling out the dash, transfer case mount and mocking up a custom gearbox crossmember!
Jocko shares where he is at with the restoration, what work has already been completed and what the final plan for the old girl is!

This feels a little closer to home being a guy in a shed just working on that long time project.. rather than building a whole Rig in 3 days.. good job Mate
or spending 150k plus...
Yes more realistic. I just finished basically the same build in my shed. All DIY. It is a hard slog. No engine swap as I kept mine completely original. Looked like it just rolled of the factory floor in the end. Got a lot of attention everywhere I drove.
@@FLIPMYRIDE that’s what it’s all about, getting it done one day and showing off your hard work
@@charedgold720 it feels bloody good mate.
@@aussiefirestorm yeah no if we are honest most people don’t have 150K put away to build something
HOT TIP!
When cutting and grinding where glass could be damaged, spray glass with lanolin spray. It will stay on for weeks and grinding sparks won't stick to the glass. Also lano is great for making rubber soft and black. Washes off with soapy water.
Hot tip no2, when painting in the engine bay and not removing wires, hoses etc you can wrap them with tin foil. Much quicker and easier than masking tape.
Great tip on the glass and "tinfoil"
I'll have to remember that little tip for tinfoil.
Couldn’t tell ya how fast I pressed on this video when I saw jocks name, still pulling for that Jocko solo trip lads, made it happen!
LIKE WISE!!! YOU GUYS NEED TO BUIILD THIS UP TO A WEAPON!!!
Not gonna happen any sooner..he dont know how to cook..day trip is ok,long trip he gonna starve to death 😆
Me too
Replace Graham and tell him to clean out your fridge at the end of a big trip.
Get him his own spin-off
Keep showing the whole build Jocko. Gotta love a old lux like this, being brought back to it's former glory.
more jocko hilux build episodes needed for sure
This is the kind of rig build video's I like. Yes, more please!
Me too! More builds and more Jocko please! I honestly cant relate to $150000 LC300s and Y62 patrols. Who even does that then goes bush bashing with them?
JOCKO: if you want to see more of this build...
ME: YES! I want to see more Hi-Lux builds (grabs cold beer from fridge & waits in anticipation)
My wife & I just love Jocko. He knows his stuff well & yet remains soft-spoken.
Greetings from Manila, Philippines 🇵🇭
As the owner of an LN61 which is my daily drive I'm excited to see even older Toyoda's on the road! Looking forward to more episodes and progress.
Keep up the recording of the build Jocko - this is a nice change from big dollar drive in drive out workshop builds. It'll give some of us inspiration to pull the covers off our own projects.
Best part of the day is sitting down, having a cold beer, and watching these videos! Keep up great work fellas
Been lacking Jocko content lately and this is exactly what I've been wanting. Need more accessible projects and old rigs that aren't 80s.
Bloody nerd out jocko!! I love hearing enthusiasts nerd out on what they're passionate about!
The 3rz-fe is a phenomenally reliable motor. I had one with 300,000 miles that ran like new. If Toyota could build a frame that didn’t rust in two, I’d still be driving it.
We had an old yellow Hilux on our cattle station, it literally rusted in half while driving it, but it still kept going because the tray hit the back of the cab preventing the snapped middle section of the chassis from dragging the ground, looked ridiculous driving around.
from then on it was known as the BananaLux
I'm looking forward to this build series. I think I speak for everyone when I say that Jocko is amazing for this channel.
Totally agree!
I would love to see the complete build from start to finish. Can’t wait to see the custom transmission and transfer case mount. Lots of luck with the old girl. Please keep us up to date.
Richard I just completed a full build on a YN65 on my channel. No custom engine swap but I took a rusted Hilux from Farm truck to show room head turner. 2 years most weekends. Very rewarding
Older 3RZ motors are underrated. A little motor that loves to work, and loves to rev. Doesn't walk up steps like a 3 liter td but a little clutch tap will get you there. We went from 3RZ to 1KZ and I would go back in a heartbeat, the 3RZ is so much more a driver's engine.
Brings back memories....
My old LN65... S/Cab, custom bar work all round, EFS Suspension, short tray.. rear locker.. etc etc, it was a beast and went every where.. love them old school trucks.
Jocko saying “sorry for nerding out.” Jocko, that’s why we are here! Nerd out to your hearts desire.
honestly who doesnt want to watch it? It doesnt matter what sort of motor industry your interested in, this is the basics of all types of modification... 6 pack already in the fridge prepared for the next instalment, love your work Jocko
Love the fact jocko ACTUALLY works on his cars. Keen as to see more of this build
It;s nice seeing some sorta technical build stuff. Thanks for the upload
Love seeing old rebuilds.. keep the eps coming!
The 3RZ engine is an excellent choice. I have it in my US Hilux (a.k.a. Tacoma) and thrash it regularly. It was also found in the Surf/4Runner, so if it is capable in that vehicle with all that weight from the factory, then you know it's good. Won't get anywhere fast, but you will get there everytime.
I have to say, well done Jocko. I have rebuilt alot of the late 1960s and early 1970 ford F-100 trucks. First thing I always did was remove the bed and cab. Then rebuilt the rolling chassis. This gave me all the room I needed and kept me off the ground. Also a cab body sitting on blocks is easy to work on. Keep going with the build mate. It looks like a great project.
Would be happy to watch these every second week!
Great to see you are going period correct Jocko. Love period correct vehicles, they will catch the eye of almost everyone. Doesn't matter if you have to make stuff work. That is All part of the rebuild. My Dad built a Toyota Stout from two 1971s and a 1964 using parts from all 3 . Very Cool stuff.
this is the best new series in ages! more episodes please! keep em coming
Great Job Jock, i had a 79 Hilux here in the states, it came with a 20r motor and a l43 4 speed anyway after 10 years of ownership 2 trips across the us and every trail on the west coast it had a om617 turbo diesel and a 5 speed. I miss that rig.
Love working on and fixing old vehicles....can't wait to follow this build!
My very first truck was a 1980 Toyota 4x4 with the 20r engine. Loved that little truck. I can't wait to watch this whole video. Will bring back so many memories.
As someone who's just sold a classic lux for health reasons, I'm super keen to see this get restored! Love ya work
Jocko is 4wd24/7 gold.
Yes please. Keep going on this build. Looking forward to the rest of the series.👍👍
Definitely need more bulid videos like this, resto mods and home built customs,
Less landcruisers and patrols with off the shelf shopping lists.
Definitely keen for more episodes like this. It’s great to watch builds come to tether and learn what not to do
The 2.7 RZ is one of the most underrated engines, super tough & they can make solid horsepower when done right.
Brings back memories stop start stop start finally 10 years later and thanks to covid lock downs I managed to get my rn 46 completed and engineered, love your work keep it up 👍👌
I love to see relatable builds on RUclips. I would probably never tackle the panel beating myself, but I love to see it!
Just bought me a Defender 130 Crew cab, absolutely destroyed by previous owners. Sat in the backyard for 6 years. Cant wait to get into that! Great work on the Luxie!
Appreciate someone who truly is passionate with his iconic 4wd's 👍👍👍👍well done Jocko 👏👏👍👍
If Jocko needs any help or info if he's looking to go forced induction on the 3rz, I have a 3rz turbo Hilux 4wd that makes 320hp on 33s, happy to help with any info on the 3rzs💪🏼
hey mate looking at buying an ln106 Hilux that's been engined swapped to turbo 3rzfe would ya recommend it? cheers
I think there was a 2wd hilux around 20 years ago in zoom magazine with a 3rz stock internals with fabricated inlet plenum and larger turbo set-up tuned making great power for a budget build. I think Jocko should take a look at yours and follow suit.
What mods have you done to it? I wanna boost my 4runner
@@anguswilliamson6622 best of both worlds mate, great motor and you can not go wrong with a ln💪🏼
Yow man. This is so good to hear. I want to know more on how to do this. I have a 3rz hilux that makes about 90hp on 31s lol. It is a very capable rig but and I love it to bits.
Keen as to see it restored to a former glory! I like the step by step that Jocko goes through and reasoning for it. Helps make it clearer when tackling a build
Finally the 1000 buck is back, it’s been a long time coming
Mate love your shed work and builds. Keep them coming
Well done mate. Loving this build. I have an 85 single cab sitting under the carport ready for a tidy up in a couple of years. I’m really liking what you’re doing here Jocko - 24/7 might swing me back to watching on a regular basis!! Nothing wrong with petrol Hiluxes. Good luck bro.
Love watching all the behind scene steps and smaller jobs you do. It helps us get a better understanding of everything and obviously learning a little from you too!! Would love to see more
I love these episodes on the older rigs, whether on the tracks or rebuild series' keep them coming!
love the old thousand buck lux can't wait for more episodes
my day is 10 times better when yous upload
I had an '82 RN46 single cab, battle truck that I could always drive home in, loved it, so simple.
Love the afro you're rocking as well Jocko
Stoked on this, just got onto this build through your message on Toyota 1st gen facebook page. Currently doing the same thing with mine in Wollongong (except going 22r for simplicity). Jobs become so big still! Thanks for the ongoing inspiration!
Need full build series! 90% of guys who own these in the US are doing all of their own work
super excited to see this build come to life. Im a huge fan of period correct restomods
Of course we want to see more of this build Jock. This is a much more realist thing to do because your everyday punter can't afford to buy a 300 series let alone cut one in half. The video where you took that red hilux was one of my favorite episodes. Keep up the good work Jock
Cudos Jock for not continuing to push the need for certain beverages, unlike your colleagues. I hope the younger viewers will follow your example. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Yes, I'd like to see a series of episodes covering this build.👍
Will be keeping a close eye on the build, good on you Jock!
Litterally just starting a build of my own so this minu series has come along in perfect time! Cheers jocko!
Doing something similar with my 1st gen. Glad my chassis was already cleaned and painted before I got it haha. But I feel your struggle mate. Can't wait to see more of it mate it will give me motivation to work on mine
Definetly keen to see the whole process/build!! Good stuff Jock
How good!! Nothing better than an old Toyota 🤙🏻🤙🏻
yes please complete this build series! good work as always.
Building cars with jocko is like doing it in my own garage it’s mint
Yeah, Jocko. Keep it going super keen to see the finished product.
Keen as mustard to see more of this build Jocko. It will be a great run around when it's finished.
Definitely keen to see more of this build. Keep the videos coming
Definitely let’s keep this going! Top stuff!!!
This type of 'real world' build is inspiration to keep working on my own. Can't wait to see more!
Love the build - looking forward to the progress
Dont be afraid of your inner nerd Joko.... your learning and gained knowledge is why we are here!!! I miss my old 82 LN46....bring on the content!!!
defintely going to absolutely love this series, cant wait!
Looking forward to this build. Brings back lots of memories. Panel beater mate and I recently finished restoring the complete body on my 1985 4WD Xtra Cab Hilux. I learnt a lot, quick. Ended up buying a 2WD version of the same year and grafting the entire roof, one of the rear pillars from it and used the bonnet as well. It was most valuable for the tub which was in good nick. So every corner, the front and tailgate were used. Couldn't use it whole as the side height was different and it didn't have the flared guards. A lot of cutting grinding and welding. Looks mint. The engine is still the original 3Y and I haven't done anything with it so far. Looking forward to seeing how yours goes. Trying to give myself inspiration.
Good to see Jocko, a proper backyard built that most of us would be doing, not the sourced out to other people, custom super expensive builds that the other 2 have done
Yes please!! Keep this series going.!!
Loving the hilux build series…keep it up jocko!!
Glad to see it back and stoked on the plan to just make it cool and period correct!
Awesome Work Jocko! this is a great series for us Newbies, don't worry about going "nerdy" it's great and indispensable info! can't wait to see how it progresses!
Will definitely keep an eye out for more episodes on this project.
Super keen for this wicked series boys, good luck with getting the beast back on the roads jocko
I did an engine swap on a 85 CJ-7 and put a 5.2l magnum V8 and one of the biggest things that helped me was to go over the wiring for both vehicles and make a list of all the wires that needed to be hooked up and then slim down the harness a bit only after i got it running so that i could make sure I didn't make any mistakes. Also, for the rust on the frame a good rust converter can really do wonders with just a light cleaning on the frame to get rid of dust dirt and grime and really cut down on work you need to do to make it look good and be protected from rust. All you need to really do is spray the frame down with some kind of powerful degreaser and then let it sit for a bit and pressure wash it off. then as long as you don't have any super flaky rust on the frame then it is ready to paint.
This is literally the exact build I’ve got at home. I have a 1979 rn46 with a well body that needs some rust repaired, a Holden 202 that needs changing to something EFI. Super keen on this build so please please keep it going! Going a different route though as ill be running twin sticks, double triangulated rear links, and 3 link front to use as a weekend crawler.
Just leave the 202 and put an EFI sniper kit on it
Super stoked on this ! More please 🤙🏽
Hi Jocko I’m a lover of the 3rz I ran 25psi on a standard engine and drove it daily for years.
One of Toyotas best four cylinders
So happy Jock shows what the progress looks like. Would be awesome to follow more of this. Like his up beat onlook to get this build done. Well done bud
Absolutely love this, one of the best builds to happen on here. Making me want to take an old lux build on
Yes i want more of this. Way better than the other to stiffs. Thanks jock.
Really love to see this Hilux get back to its glory. Hope you keep the videos coming with her.
My first pickup here in the USA was a 1979 Toyota 4WD long bed pickup with the 20R engine and a 4 speed manual. Bought it in 1993 or 94 with 80K miles for $5k and traded it in in 98' for a 1988 pickup with 88K and a 22R engine. I put about 220K miles on that 1979 and the dealer gave me $5k (what I paid for it) in trade for the 1988. The 1979 was White with blue stripes, the 1988 was Blue with silver stripes. Loved those trucks, but I moved on to 4Runners after that for reliable 4WD in winter conditions.
Love this build. Here in Canada we don’t see much stuff in that good a shape to rebuild decades later. You say rust , we laugh, that’s nothing!!! Haha. Keep going Professor Jocko!!!
Can't wait for the progress on the build. Keep the vids coming.
Best build yet!!!
More please!!! Thank you for sharing!
Love this content. Always great to see the hands on stuff, keep it coming Jocko!
Jocko saves the day........... i mean the lux. Full series please. I would be awesome to follow
Always love a good build series 🙌🏼
Go for it jocko can’t wait till it’s finished.
Will be a great build series to watch keen to see a full series jocko
Can’t wait for the build !! More build videos
Yes please, definitely want to see this build completed....
Was only just wondering about this build the other day, good to see that it’s still in the works, keep up the good work
