  • This is a look around my indoor grow space and greenhouse to see what is growing March 15, 2024.
    I grow flowers and vegetables in Saskatchewan, Canada. My cold hardiness zone is zone 3b. I have an average of 110 frost free growing days each year. The past few years have seen our temperatures go as low as -37C (-34.6F) to as high as 37C (98.6F). Come see what and how I grow in these conditions.

    Howdy, Prairie Plantgirl, and oh so cute Buster! 👋 I really enjoyed your tour of your grow areas! You sure are making great use of your greenhouse. 🪴 There is so much goodness growing on!👍
    And, dig this...this morning I was putting bird food and water out for the birds and noticed a blue flower on the ground. I wondered what it was? I now know from your tour...it's a volunteer lobelia!😃
    I obtain knowledge from every one of your posts!😃
    I hope your cherry trees will be okay.
    We are starting to see low 90s here.
    You aren't crazy...your summer beauty and bounty will be the fruit of your joyful labor! Oh, and many folks around the globe with happy gardens are also the fruit of your joyful labor.💕

    Thank you for sharing! Really enjoy seeing your progress; we are in zone 3b too. Love your indoor setup and your greenhouse. Your plants look so healthy and vibrant, and right on track. 👏We started ours late so things are a bit smaller.

    😅 I have tons of flats and no more room! And I just started tomatoes 😮.
    I only have about 135 days of growing season, Z5a, WI.
    This year I decided to start a large number of annuals and perennials and today I’m at a crossroads of what can be up-potted and who can squeeze in under lights. The greenhouse is full, but I’m thinking today of 4’ racks like you have in the house to get more space. I have 2’ racks inside.
    😂When you showed your GH I laughed as it’s about the same as mine except I have way too big of peppers-Yikes! I started them Way too soon this year (cabin fever) some are flowering and I’m pinching them off and not sure if I should top them. 😮
    Oh, So glad I found your channel as we have the same weather dilemmas and set up for growing. The only difference is the plants outside are a bit more advanced outside here as we have daffodils and tulips blooming.
    Yes! I’m very concerned about fruit outside and tonight we will start getting that cold from the north and our plum trees are blooming and apples are right there also. I don’t know what to do about it because if I put a frost cloth on the buds could get knocked off. Last year a May 25th freak freeze took out A LOT of plants. The winery nearby lost 95% of grapes and they are on a bluff where we are down low. No weather warning either and we were having 90*F temps.(32.22*C).
    We had success on experimental above ground root cellar we call the Rootaloo 😊 and I didn’t think the non stop begonias were even alive. I ignored them until yesterday and noticed one poor sprout and was so shocked there was life and so mad at myself for not taking care of them-Ugh! I grew them from seed last year and they were gorgeous and huge. I just couldn’t find a tuber as they looked like a big knot of roots 😫 apparently they were in there somewhere. I have no room for dahlias, but I did have a few geraniums make it through.
    😂I laughed again when you showed the low tunnel as I’m doing the same and have a mix of brassicas going. I’m using heavy frost cloth right now and will be covering with plastic for the next 4 nights at least. Maybe a quilt on a couple as we tend to get 5 degrees colder than forecast says.
    Thanks for showing what your seedlings are doing-they look great and I’m sure we could talk gardening all day. 😊

      I loved hearing about your spring seed starting. Thanks for sharing! Hopefully this blast of cold is over soon and we can get back to starting tonnes of seeds and trying to figure out where to squeeze all the plants in.

    Just discovered you, and I'm glad as another canadian gardener. I'm in Ontario, zone 5b. Just started to grow flowers from seed other than a few basic varieties this year, and have had mixed success. But I have enough to worry about where I'm going to put them haha, so all good. I started late coz I got diagnosed with a health issue that will impact how much I can garden. I had the shelves and good lights and supplies all ready, so at least what has sprouted is healthy and growing well. The limiting factor being the time I can spend to up-pot, etc, so I'm trying to lessen the number of transplanting I can do.
    I gotta say, I'm super jealous about your impatiens lol. I got 1 sprout, out of 2 packets of seeds! Haven't tried flowering begonias but tried to grow a rex begonia from seed, and I think I have 1 teeny tiny sprout out of 7 expensive seeds lol.

      Welcome to the channel! It’s great to hear from other gardeners. Impatiens can take a very long time to germinate.
      Sorry to hear you are having health issues. Hopefully puttering with your plants offers some peaceful moments.

      @@PrairiePlantgirl for sure. I'm now watching more gardening on yt than I am actually gardening, so it's great to see canadian growers.
      Gardening is my therapy time, and even staring at the plants can help. I'm just glad I'm (crossing fingers) at least well enough that I'll still be able to get out at least some of my essential veggies and some cool varieties of flowers, hopefully.
      I also splurged on spring bulbs last year and am super happy seeing them sprout and bloom!

    Looking forward to see how you acclimate your plants to the sun outside without burning them. I started a lot of seeds indoor and I'm not too sure whats the best way to do it.

      Just a few hours at a time outside on nice days. Start out of direct sun or in early morning sun.

    Your dahlias look great. Would you start pre sprouting now if you were going away for a few weeks or do they need lots of attention while pre sprouting? Instead, would you recommend just plant them it directly after first frost date has passed?

    • @PrairiePlantgirl
      @PrairiePlantgirl  2 месяца назад +1

      I would start pre sprouting now, but I would use vermiculite instead of soil or peat moss if available to you. The vermiculite will hold a more constant moisture level for longer. I am not as experienced with coco coir but it holds moisture well too.

    I love your grow room and your green house. Do you ever put any appliance to heat the greenhouse when you know that the outdoor temperature will be below freezing? I saw a video where the person used a terra cotta saucer and pot with a burning candle under the pot to raise the temperature inside the greenhouse. I am afraid to try that in my cold frame. I worry that the heat rising through the drip hole of the pot would be too intense and might melt the ceiling of the cold frame, (it is not glass) which is only about 2 feet high at the peak of the A-shape roof. I started my bell pepper seeds in February, as recommended for my area and it looks like it was way too early. I started them in Solo cups and last week I put them into large, 750 mg yogurt containers. Now they have blossom buds. When do you usually transplant your peppers into the ground?

    • @PrairiePlantgirl
      @PrairiePlantgirl  2 месяца назад +1

      I have tried the candles in pots for heating. This might work in a very small cold frame - 2 foot cubed? If you put jugs of hot water in a space like that I feel it works just as well. I have had success running a large crock pot in my plastic greenhouse. I currently have a small space heater that I can run. I also use frost cloth over my plants.
      I put my peppers out right around my average last frost date. I keep an eye on the forecast and as long as it is above freezing the peppers go out. I cover them the first few nights as they adjust (if I remember 🙃).

      @JS-jl1yj 2 месяца назад

      @@PrairiePlantgirl I have 2 cold frames, each is about 18 cubic feet. The jugs filled with hot water sounds safer than the candles. I will also look for the frost cloth. Thank you for your advice.

      @PrairiePlantgirl  2 месяца назад +1

      @JS-jl1yj good luck. If you are having sunny days, large rocks or bricks can help absorb heat and slowly release it overnight. Very cold nights may require a heavy blanket on top the cold frame. Anything to provide and maintain heat.
