- Two Maui visitors who were carjacked and robbed at gunpoint had to run, hide and hike for their lives to the top of the Haleakalā volcano. Itʻs an ordeal authorities did not reveal publicly until NewsNation local affiliate KHON2 started asking questions. Now, the victims are speaking out to warn others about danger on Maui.

Making Californians feel at home.
And rumor has it the gunman was an African-American from California on vacation. 😂😂😂
@@boblatkey7160 Yep said he was a resident on Maui but otherwise correctamundo.
Not an outlier incident at all. There was a guy shooting people with a cross bow at Hapuna State Beach Park for weeks. He’s out on bail after not even a an hour in jail. No consequences. There was also a murder along Ali’i drive at a bar across from a Marriott while we were there. They have a criminal catch and release program in Hawaii.
Every other state gives their homeless and criminal a plane ticket here.
Because they don't want them back.
Seems like policy making maui unsafe has the covert result of discouraging tourism.
yep. i follow a lot of news in Hawaii since i have family that recently moved there. just as crime ridden as CA (lots of theft, destruction of property, and attacks on people. just a few months ago someone was randomly set on fire) with very similar 'crime is basically legal' vibes. also many homeless are sent over from other states (often with criminal records) so massive strain on resources.
Hawaii is a democrat state. No due diligence required. Just vote blue every time.
@@aubreymorgan9763 That's absolutely true, other states put them on a plane to Hawaii. Especially states with cold winters, like Alaska.
Wow, a very well known criminal, convicted of a list of horrible crimes. Yet, he was allowed to just run free ?
If you want to continue being low in crime rate, you just might want to consider..... This couple was EXTREMELY
lucky.
Woke DA’s. Yall keep voting blue. 😂
Democrats.
That's not unusual in Hawaii ..
But, but, disenfranchisement! Systemic blah blah! The criminal's the real victim here!

crime in Hawaii no way never
I've seen so called law abiding citizens become stupid and flash a gun during a road rage.
Just as intended, it makes them more bold. They know only the law abiding follow the laws. The easiest targets are always the most vulenerable and unprotected under progressive rule.
What guns laws? Are you kidding me? The U.S. gun laws are so lax when compared to other countries. Then you wonder why criminals have access to guns.
did hawaii outlaw guns?
Media, please make sure to show the victims and not the criminals.
What?? Victims deserve privacy.

Wow, it’s a good thing that NO LAW ABIDING CITZEN is allowed to carry a gun in HAWAII. Can you imagine the HORROR it would be to be able to defend your own life.
I was from California, and i know exactly of what you speak. Not all of us are lucky enough to have an active escape volcano handy.
What are you talking about? We have concealed carry here.
@@whereisyourhumanity7557 That person's just a troll trying to cause trouble.
That's right someone could defend themselves while 20 other people had an accident with their gun because they didn't have the competency to carry one in the first place. There is no more of a stupid idea than yours!
😂
This should be a lifetime movie….
Nah. Criminal Minds.
It will be, just wait!
The Miske, Kaneshiro, Choy, Kealoha and 8/08 fires so many cases of alleged criminals doing movie worthy crimes here way bigger than this but all would be entertaining movies. Still no movies about hotel street organized crime from WW2. The state might pay to avoid bad publicity movies being released like the CCP.
@@MsRotorwingsNah, I feel like it’s not violent/intriguing enough for Criminal Minds. The main appeal of this story is the romantic prospect of a couple surviving by relying on each other. That’s more Lifetime or even Hallmark movie than Criminal Minds.
Hawaii sustainable, that just plain sucks. It's your home and I am so sorry that happened to you.
Staying vigilant wouldn’t have changed a damned thing for this couple.
Thanks for the bullshit platitudes regarding, “oh, this isn’t a real problem for citizens (no one REALLY needs the means to defend themselves)…just usually tourists”. Thanks a pant-load, Linda
But guns are all but illegal in Hawaii. Impossible.
thats a lie
Gun laws only work when deployed on a national scale.
And they work VERY well.
Ofcourse gun laws on a state by state basis won't do Jack, because you can just drive to hour neighbouring state, arm up and then drive back like the Las Vegas shooter did, all his guns were legal purchases.
😂
Sounds like a really relaxing vacation.
I’m in a car you pulled a gun , then you ended up with tribal tire tread tattoos

Absolutely. 100% right.
They got blocked the way out , maybe was a dead end .
It happened to me in Maui , there is a very narrow bridge , it was a bring brunch in the middle , here comes a guy with machete in hand demanding $20 to let me thru the bridge .
There goes my $20
He gets new tattoo. You get new piercings. Even trade.
And you get a free lead tattoo.
Carjacking on an island? Can it be that hard to find a car on an island?
years ago on oahu some moron jacked a full sized garbage truck and ended up swimming in the ocean for 1.5 hours the whole time the police could see him. he got caught as soon as he came back on shore haha. there is really no escape unless you're really deep in the import/export gang and know the right people
People don’t realize Hawaii has some very rough areas
Poverty.
Like Mexico any area outside of the resorts and occasionally not even safe at the resorts. They have been far too extractive with tourism and feudalism. Serf Report: Miserable
You only have to leave your bag on the beach, once,to know nothing is safe…but, this is pretty awful…
@@toneenorman2135 there are some parts of Hawaii you simply don’t want to go if you’re from the mainland and white. It’s 3rd world and I’ve seen them, that’s what I’m referring to, not some low level petty larceny or theft. Lots of people are also on hard drugs like meth or opioids.
No need for me to go there
May the couple finds peace and healing after such a frightening ordeal.

No! This was an isolated incident. I have friends from Maui, locals, they are laid back, mellow. This thief was supposed to be behind bars.
Maui needs tourism, especially since the fire. Please visit and support local. Maui is beautiful

Naahhh
@C.A14210 definitely not you though. Stay home.
I lived there for six years, drove nearly all of the main roads, and can say that it's easily 99% safe, and totally worth visiting or living. This couple's gamble was said at 0:58 -- "they drove down what appeared to be a closed road". Pot and other drug production sites are in less accessible places, so those should be avoided. Or buzz the place from a distance in a drone first.
The statement about Hawaii being so safe -- incl. in Honolulu, with its Asian gangs -- "according to the Hawaii Dept. of the Atty. General" 2:28 isn't exactly coming from reliable source, since the islands depend so much on tourism. Kind of like they say, though, violent crime is more between locals, while petty theft is between locals and tourists.

Remember when I gave Maui residents $700 after the fires??
Another 50 billion to Ukraine on the way

@@whereisyourhumanity7557 Well $700 is an insult compared to the billions to Ukraine! How did $700 help anyone? They needed much more! I believe the fire was deliberate and a land grab by the elites for their WEF 15 minute city! It even happened on an Occult Day 8/8 Lionsgate and they didn't sound the alarms, water for the fire was withtheld and the police were literally sending people back into the fire and stopping them from escape. I'm amazed that this couple made it up Haleakala on foot. It's nearly impossible to do in a 24 hour period and I'm waiting to hear about that part of the story.
They went 100 yards and hid...
It's TV so figure the report is 50% accurate at best.
@@jmac430 NO! They went all the way to the TOP! And I too am amazed at this, because I have gone DOWN the mountain on foot, and that was exhausting. All I can say is, they were running for their lives. At first, I thought what you were thinking, that the reporters were saying "they went up the mountan" instead of going "down the mountain".. for a hundred yards or so. But one report clearly describes them reaching the TOP. This is some extreme climbing...

Why not show the suspects face? I’m just curious
He’s a native Hawaiian.
So he's well known and he's still able to roam free?!

Being from Hawaii this is so sad 🤦🏼♂️
weird, they didn't show a photo of the criminal....
I lived and worked on Maui many years ago. Tourists don’t know that it and all of Hawaii can be very dangerous. I eventually would not go to public beaches alone. This is not the side that most see.
If only they had stricter gun laws… surely the bad guys would never…
Yeah, let's see a picture of this guy.
Yeah! So that if he's not white, we have an excuse to spout some of our racist BS, like we love to do!
I visited before the fires. It was nice. That will be my last visit.
Never really discuss the crime problem in Hawaii!
There is not a big crime problem on Maui
They hide it from tourists and new comers because that’s our entire economy outside of military spending nowadays but it’s almost all criminals at every level here. Entire books and documentaries on the organized crime here. If they went back it would likely just be a couple more missing persons that don’t really make the news.
@@MrSlantwisebs. Take ur blinders off
They hate mainlanders on Maui. I will never go back
why is this video showing Oahu?
Remember, if you have an opening your car is just as dangerous as a firearm. I'd not have let them even get fully out of the car before I went around them or rammed dude while he's just outside his car door.
This is what sucks about leaving my state and not being able to bring my pistol to certain destinations. Today I only make vacations to states with reciprocity with mine. Some you have to jump through a couple hoops before and some you have full reciprocity and some won't let you. I have family to protect so we don't go to the ones who won't. The fun vacations states minus California thankfully have at least some form of reciprocity with conceal and carry.
But but but… I thought guns were illegal to own on the Hawaii Islands??
It’s not at all illegal to own. We have much more relaxed gun laws than a few other states. And we have cc here.
You're dreaming.
How could this have happened with the country’s strictest gun laws???
We actually don’t have the countries strictest gun laws. I’m against any and all bs gun laws. Criminals don’t follow laws
People be like "we should be able to travel to other states and countries safely." These folks are delusional.
Thank you! This is the comment I've been looking for.
WHY would travelling on Maui be any safer than travelling in Detroit, or WA DC?
Yet another reason I’m never going to Maui again. Years ago, it was beautiful 😢
Now people understand what Locals only means.
Maybe this can serve as material for a sequel to the movie “Deliverance”. We can call it “Deliverance 2: Hawaii No Ka O' Here”
🤔 One would think Hawaii’s tourism industry would be so vitally important to the state that they would make examples of any criminals harassing tourists in any way.
But wait …other people were also chasing them ? Who…
Maybe an illegal grow operation nearby.
I’ve heard of this type of “stalking” in the more remote parts
Hey great timing on this video, thank you! We were thinking about a trip to Hawaii next year. We will now be finding a different location.

Terrifying experience. And THEN I saw his previous criminal record and understood that even if Space Force turned space lasers onto poor people in Lahaina, these fools would continue to vote Democrat, hence the repeat offender is emboldened and walking around to terrorize the tourists.

Stay on the Main Land.

The dude is stronger than you’ll ever be with your guns
Ummm. not sure about your airlines, but last I checked you can't take a gun on a plane. I'm sure they didn't swim to Hawaii.
I'm in Hawaii.
1) Haleakala is not an active volcano
2) Some of the footage looked like Waikiki on Oahu, not Maui
3) 30 violent crimes a year for Honolulu is wildly inaccurate. It's higher. We do have less of that than property crimes which are out of control due to ineffective law enforcement. Hawaii has tons of property crime and a not insignificant amount of other crime. That being said, most tourists do not experience violent crime. There's a lot they can do to reduce risks for other crimes if they know how. Most people enjoy their vacation.
4) This story is a month old?
5) It's too bad they had no picture of the suspect, no mug shot, no social media? I've seen mug shots in the local media before here.
Apparently the reporter has never lived in Maui.
want to make a joke about it being tourist season and hunting but... to be honest im saddened by what my state has become.
Wait, what? Doesn’t Hawaii have some of the strictest gun laws in the country?🤔
Yet folks are not allowed to own guns in HI even to protect themselves.
Why is it always couples from California that this happens to when in Hawaii? It's never a couple a from Texas or Michigan, always California.....
They may have a low crime rate, but I found Hawaiians pretty hostile to outsides, like they had to hold their noses just long enough to take our money. I got a bad feeling when I was there. I'm not going anywhere where the locals resent me on sight. Apparently the natives want to shut down tourism on Maui until it heals from the fire and as far as I'm concerned they can heal forever.
Mt. Haleakala is NOT active.
But there can't be any guns in Maui... Hawaii has the lowest gun ownership in the US due to thier rediculious anti American anti Constitution laws.
Free Hawaii
"IN Maui"? It's an island and we live ON it.
"thier rediculious" ? that's ironic.
The 2A never specifically mentions firearms. The 2A was written to protect citizens from a totalitarian gov't., not protect citizens from each other.
Why can't Hawaiians own private nukes?
It happens so rarely in Hawaii so that everyone who lives there knows the guy who did it. Cant say the same about all other gun wielding states.
No one is coming to save you
LOL, "no fair, we did what we were told"
Its no longer feels very safe o go to the islands anymore. Last time I was on Oahu I got robbed and I'm literally there with no ID, phone money, credit cards, passport,ect..I got so lucky that some wonderful Islanders took amazing care of me as a white tourist and helped me get sorted out, i went to homes and had lovely family dinners, they took me to incredible beaches and hikes, lent me money until I could get some cash..
Stay away then. Ciao
Haleakala is an inactive volcano, but quite a hike. Glad they are ok.
Hate crime
I'm in Hawaii. Lots of misinformation about gun ownership. It's legal to own a gun in Hawaii if you have a license, which does not seem to be that hard to get. Some people can carry a gun if they have a special permit for that. They don't reciprocate other state's carry permits. If they did you would have to get the gun through airports and take care of it while on vacation where people spend lots of time on the beach. Most crime against tourists involves stealing their stuff while their backs are turned or they are not there.. For tourists, more good could be done by learning prevention tips than carrying a gun.
Don’t drive down closed roads. Why do people do that?
The usual suspect.
Again and again even in Hawaii?
Media outlets who don't post the suspects photos and information, should be prosecuted for aiding and abetting, tired of criminals being protected.
If they had a way to defend themselves, this would not be a problem. Stop outlawing self-defense.
So having good cardio enough to hike a volcano saved them. Take note everyone who is not able to hike to save your life 😂
"Active volcano" which hasn't erupted between 1480 and 1600 and that wasn't at the Summit. Although, since it has erupted in the past 1000 years, it is considered "active"
He was out on bail! He told the cops he had a gun but they didn't even search the car and let him go! He was arrested after trying to run over his GF (or EX) several times to force her to get in his car, when she got in the car he punched her, made terroristic threats and got a kidnap charge = $11K bail. 😡 His own father complained that he should not have been released on such low bail or released until they searched for and secured the gun he told them he had! 😣 He has a long criminal history including kidnapping and sexual assault! 😖😫 Sounds like he is escalating and they are VERY LUCKY!
Haleakala is NOT an active volcano. It’s dormant. Nevertheless, this must have been incredibly scary. I’m glad they weren’t physically harmed.
This occurence has all the makings for a great horror move.

Tourism is #1 money-maker $$$$$$$ for Maui, lots of visitors so scary 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
This needs to be on the ID Channel.
I lived on Oahu for 4 years when I was growing up, and visited the Big Island for a couple of weeks during that time. Apart from one time when a stranger suspiciously offered me a ride while I was walking in my neighborhood (I was about 11 years old at the time, and this was a woman maybe in her thirties) I never had any incidents. Overall the people of Hawaii are very friendly, but as with any place that might be unfamiliar, tourists should exercise appropriate caution. I'm glad this couple escaped unharmed. Of course, Maui is still dealing with the aftermath of the Lahaina fire of almost a year ago, and I'm sure this has caused some disruption.
