  • Two Maui visitors who were carjacked and robbed at gunpoint had to run, hide and hike for their lives to the top of the Haleakalā volcano. Itʻs an ordeal authorities did not reveal publicly until NewsNation local affiliate KHON2 started asking questions. Now, the victims are speaking out to warn others about danger on Maui.

Not an outlier incident at all. There was a guy shooting people with a cross bow at Hapuna State Beach Park for weeks. He’s out on bail after not even a an hour in jail. No consequences. There was also a murder along Ali’i drive at a bar across from a Marriott while we were there. They have a criminal catch and release program in Hawaii.

yep. i follow a lot of news in Hawaii since i have family that recently moved there. just as crime ridden as CA (lots of theft, destruction of property, and attacks on people. just a few months ago someone was randomly set on fire) with very similar 'crime is basically legal' vibes. also many homeless are sent over from other states (often with criminal records) so massive strain on resources.

I lived there for six years, drove nearly all of the main roads, and can say that it's easily 99% safe, and totally worth visiting or living. This couple's gamble was said at 0:58 -- "they drove down what appeared to be a closed road". Pot and other drug production sites are in less accessible places, so those should be avoided. Or buzz the place from a distance in a drone first.
The statement about Hawaii being so safe -- incl. in Honolulu, with its Asian gangs -- "according to the Hawaii Dept. of the Atty. General" 2:28 isn't exactly coming from reliable source, since the islands depend so much on tourism. Kind of like they say, though, violent crime is more between locals, while petty theft is between locals and tourists.

Remember, if you have an opening your car is just as dangerous as a firearm. I'd not have let them even get fully out of the car before I went around them or rammed dude while he's just outside his car door.
This is what sucks about leaving my state and not being able to bring my pistol to certain destinations. Today I only make vacations to states with reciprocity with mine. Some you have to jump through a couple hoops before and some you have full reciprocity and some won't let you. I have family to protect so we don't go to the ones who won't. The fun vacations states minus California thankfully have at least some form of reciprocity with conceal and carry.

    I'm in Hawaii.
    1) Haleakala is not an active volcano
    2) Some of the footage looked like Waikiki on Oahu, not Maui
    3) 30 violent crimes a year for Honolulu is wildly inaccurate. It's higher. We do have less of that than property crimes which are out of control due to ineffective law enforcement. Hawaii has tons of property crime and a not insignificant amount of other crime. That being said, most tourists do not experience violent crime. There's a lot they can do to reduce risks for other crimes if they know how. Most people enjoy their vacation.
    4) This story is a month old?
    5) It's too bad they had no picture of the suspect, no mug shot, no social media? I've seen mug shots in the local media before here.

They may have a low crime rate, but I found Hawaiians pretty hostile to outsides, like they had to hold their noses just long enough to take our money. I got a bad feeling when I was there. I'm not going anywhere where the locals resent me on sight. Apparently the natives want to shut down tourism on Maui until it heals from the fire and as far as I'm concerned they can heal forever.

Last time I was on Oahu I got robbed and I'm literally there with no ID, phone money, credit cards, passport,ect..I got so lucky that some wonderful Islanders took amazing care of me as a white tourist and helped me get sorted out, i went to homes and had lovely family dinners, they took me to incredible beaches and hikes, lent me money until I could get some cash..

I'm in Hawaii. Lots of misinformation about gun ownership. It's legal to own a gun in Hawaii if you have a license, which does not seem to be that hard to get. Some people can carry a gun if they have a special permit for that. They don't reciprocate other state's carry permits. If they did you would have to get the gun through airports and take care of it while on vacation where people spend lots of time on the beach. Most crime against tourists involves stealing their stuff while their backs are turned or they are not there.. For tourists, more good could be done by learning prevention tips than carrying a gun.

He was out on bail! He told the cops he had a gun but they didn't even search the car and let him go! He was arrested after trying to run over his GF (or EX) several times to force her to get in his car, when she got in the car he punched her, made terroristic threats and got a kidnap charge = $11K bail. 😡 His own father complained that he should not have been released on such low bail or released until they searched for and secured the gun he told them he had! 😣 He has a long criminal history including kidnapping and sexual assault! 😖😫 Sounds like he is escalating and they are VERY LUCKY!

I lived on Oahu for 4 years when I was growing up, and visited the Big Island for a couple of weeks during that time. Apart from one time when a stranger suspiciously offered me a ride while I was walking in my neighborhood (I was about 11 years old at the time, and this was a woman maybe in her thirties) I never had any incidents. Overall the people of Hawaii are very friendly, but as with any place that might be unfamiliar, tourists should exercise appropriate caution. I'm glad this couple escaped unharmed. Of course, Maui is still dealing with the aftermath of the Lahaina fire of almost a year ago, and I'm sure this has caused some disruption.
