The toss is quite important, maybe the most important thing for Serve. For Flat Serve, it is so important to toss front enough, otherwise it will easily hurt your shoulder/wrist/elbow if you swing too hard for a close toss.

I am trying to teach my kid how to do a simple flat serve as he tends to slice unintentionally. I like the fence drill and will have him run through that. I hope that he will gain the "feeling" of flat vs slice serve through a more exaggerated motion drill.

Yes... I do find your advice helpful on the positions of the ball toss, on the directions of the movement of the racket. Thanks a lot!
BTW, the length of your video is perfect.

Hello Pieter, nice work. I need to allow the ball to drop a little more on the kick serve. This better enables me to hit up and across or over the ball. On the flat serve, I hit the ball at the peak with my arm fully extended. It looks like you're doing the same, but I can't be certain from the pace of the video.

So from a physics point of view, slice serve turns after the ball bounces. The kick serve turns in the air but does not turn after it bounces. My guess (guess) is that kick serve has bit of top spin. Top spin stops after bounce and so does not change direction. Then the question becomes why the slice serve does not swing in the air?

How we call usual first serve we see on TV, if it's not flat, is this kind of baby KICK serve, i.e. rotation around 7-1 o'clock axe, is there any other name/term for First serve?

Great video. One big issue though: people often describe slices different than the actual serve ie. at 3:47 the coach carves around the ball as if there is no pronation. That's only possible in a slow swing motion. That swing is impossible at full speed with a continental grip. The slice is actually just slightly different than the flat serve. WIth flat, your racket has fully opened to hit flat on, whereas slice, your racket is just a little before fully opened at contact. It seems people want to demonstrate a really exaggerated false swing to show the type of spin being imparted.

Hello Pieter, I truly enjoy your videos. They're very informative and to the point.., I would appreciate your help on the ball toss mechanics and I don't mean straight arm straight shoulder etc.. because I apply all of these things but my tosses are still all over the place with too much revolutions.

i feel like theres almost no pronation in your flat and my coach wants me to finish full pronation on a flat serve, i dont get it

Look at your serve (and mine) in super Slow-motion and you will see pronation. If you have the correct grip pronation becomes automatic
