The music is honestly what makes this game so fantastic. So much atmosphere is *packed* into every song. I'm glad I got to play the Genesis version as a kid.
Amiga was an incredible machine for its time! We are talking about 1985 hardware, that could easily compete against the 16bit machines that came 5 years later.
It was a struggle to compete. How many 8way scrolling games ran at 50fps in 32 colours on the Amiga compared to those that ran at 25fps ? The Megadrive in my opinion had more powerful graphics hardware with respect to gaming.
@@SerBallister You should take a look at Jim Power at some point. Turrican 3 on Amiga was ... poor. Jim Power (and Shadow of the Beast of course) shows what you can do with parallax scrolling, it beats what we see here by far. This game does not use the potential of the Amiga at all. It's also a shame that only a few games ever used the 64 color mode for enhanced graphics.
i like the genesis background better on the first level it has more design and the green on the alien level a bit more work on the background details such as colors or artwork.
What a fantastic presentation for this video! And a very interesting comparison too. I love the music on both systems but when there's the switch it takes a bit of time to start liking the other one again! Speaking about the side by side layout- it's almost as if Factor 5 knew this was going to be made one day at 1:38... lol
The Megadrive version was developed first, because at that time Commodore were in serious trouble and Factor 5 had doubts as to the future of the Amiga platform. Many developers did. Also a lot of them were fed up with the rampant piracy on the Amiga platform, where console markets suffered a lot less. The Megadrive also does have the edge over the Amiga in that it has far more hardware sprites in higher colour, and more layers of parallax in hardware. It also has the benefit of being a cartridge system, so that many megabytes of graphics data are immediately accessible. The Amiga (500+/600) only had 1MB of system RAM to work with. The Amiga version on the other hand, would have benefitted and probably kept up with the Megadrive *IF* it had been coded to use the Amiga 1200's AGA hardware and 2MB of system RAM, instead of the older Amiga ECS platform. I suspect they went with ECS so that they could maximise sales, as the A1200 was fairly new at the time. The development time on the Amiga version was fairly short too. I recall hearing that Peter Thierolf wrote most of itt as "a bet" when he heard someone say the Amiga couldn't handle the game. He really did push the ECS Amiga hardware to its limits though. The source code was leaked some time ago, and it showed some pretty tight and efficient programming
The Amiga Version had a different Intro Theme. It´s longer and sounds much better. Some of the Level Music sounds better on Mega Drive/Genesis. Both has very good tunes.
The only direct comparison between the Genesis/Mega Drive and the Amiga was the same CPU family 68000. The Amiga is in no way a stripped down Genesis if anything it would be the other way around as the Amiga is a full blown computer. How many Genesis systems were used by NASA, were in the production of TV shows, ran businesses with any number of productivity software the list goes on but the Genesis is known for "Games" and yes even the original Amiga A1000 was 60Hz capable and later AGA models were capable of even higher refresh. The reason many games were released at 50Hz was the Amiga was popular in England that uses 50Hz PAL on TV so many games were aimed at that market. BTW PAL has a higher resolution than NTSC 60Hz also the Genesis is also restricted to 50Hz on PAL. Amiga A1000 released in 85 was an absolute beast of a computer and at $1300 it was good value compared to PC's of the time which were often 2-3 thousand. It offered better sound and video than any comparable off the shelf PC of the time, and The OS was also years ahead of the competition (comparing Mac or PC to the Amiga at the time is laughable) and when the A500 was released in 87 bringing the price down and in to more homes it was still far ahead of the pack. The Amiga doesn't require a Z80 processor for the sounds as the sound chip "Paula" is a custom designed (not some bought off the shelf chip used in the genesis) that is already a co-processor. So when you ask why do Amiga fanboys think the hardware is more powerful than God it's because it was by far the best all-around computer of the time and it also played great games! not just games.
+daishi5571 Just to know, who are you talking to? Since a lot of what you said doesn't make sense regarding psyance's comment not to mention some funny bits such as "and it also played great games! not just games", do you imply that the Amiga has better games that the Mega Drive?! That it has better action games than Shinobi III or Alien Soldier? Better shoot 'em ups than Thunder Force III or IV? Better beat 'em ups than Streets of Rage trilogy? Better puzzle games than Columns III or Puyo Puyo? etc etc. ps: I'm both a Mega Drive and Amiga fan but lol, the amount of bullshit that most Amiga fanboys tend to spout out, quite sad as I have hard times to find what I could consider "cool Amiga fans" even if fortunately there are exceptions such as Zeusdaz.
+Parallax Craze The reason my original comments no longer make sense is that the post I replied to is no longer listed. What was said amongst other things no longer in the post, that the "Amiga was a stripped down MD/Gen" so you can see why I replied (I like accuracy) ask psyance ;-) "and it also played great games! not just games" so you liked that :-) And no I was not comparing it to any specific games on the MD/Gen which was a great game machine, I was just saying that the Amiga also had some great games on top of being a great productive computer. I like these comparisons of games but sometimes it requires context. I am an Amiga fan, there are other systems I like, but the Amiga was the 1st system that blew me away (come on preemptive multitasking on a desktop in the 80's) For some good Amiga fan channels (none are just Amiga) take a look at: Dan Wood - kookytech.net mjnurney Modern Vintage Gamer EDIT- Corrected post as I was contacted by psyance about incorrect information.
+daishi5571 1° I didn't edit my post according to your comment, I don't do such things. 2° and your comment was a response to a guy whose name was something like Tyler Durden and who apparently deleted his account. You say you like accuracy but you seem to lack a bit in that respect not to mention pointless accusations ;)
+psyance I apologize. I saw that you had edited your post in this thread, and with only you as the other person I made an assumption! an incorrect assumption. Thank you for the correction.
I love the Amiga's soundtrack, but I got the most play and enjoyment from the MD version, to be fair. This also applies to games like Puggsy and Chuck Rock.
Gameplay and graphics nicer on the Genesis, and I like it’s audio mix, it I still have a soft spot for the Amiga version and how it completes the trilogy.. I love the Amiga‘s music - the three games soundtracks combined work really well together.
Turrican has a lot of nostalgia value. I used to play it on my cousin's Amiga to stave off the boredom of family gatherings... and then she'd scare the shit out of me by putting Alien in the VCR and I wouldn't sleep for weeks. Come to think of it, that was a fairly traumatic time for me O.o
Turrican 3 was developed for the MD, and ported to the Amiga... but then the Amiga version ended up coming out first. There were some changes made, and then it was finally released on the MD.
I was born in 1986 and grew up on the Mega Drive (Genesis) and SNES. To me and the kids at school, the Amiga was in the same category as the Commodore, old things that people hadn't used for years. I didn't realise (until these comparison videos) that the graphics (at least of the Amiga, no idea about the Commodore) were similar to the Mega Drive!
Elliot Bridgewater I always wanted an Amiga 500+ but had to make do with consoles. I started out with an Atari 2600 and progressed onto the NES and so on, but unfortunately home computers were just a little too expensive and I had difficulty justifying the cost to my parents. It's the very definition of first world problems, but there you go :)
Duh the Amiga ocs is from 1985, and the Genesis is from 1989 But the most ports on the Amiga are better, like Another World, Lemmings and Shadow of the beast any meny more.
The genesis and amiga uses the same cpu, and the amiga have far better sound chip then the Genesis. Most ports are beter on the Amiga, then the Genesis.
Mega Drive looks better with parallax backgrounds and don't forget about loading times, the thing this rev totally loses, MD's rom cartridge gives very fast and quiet loadind while Amigas floppys are slow and noisy and you should change them if that's more than 1 floppy game
Keep in mind, amiga one floppy disk with less memory than cartridge, have to stack everything on one floppy disk because of time production. If it was made on 3 disks, it would get more details on the backgrounds and amiga is capable to do same like megadrive by far.
Great work :) it's clear that Genesis is superior version. Amiga lack so many small animated parts and elements. I like still how they use animated gradients to draw those pipes in background on first stage and cycle palette in alien background.
@@ajsingh4545 This is wrong. Turrican 3 on the Amiga was released in 1993. This is also in the opening credits of the game. Mega Turrican was released in 1994. Also in the opening credits.
@@paulnick826 Well, Mega Turrican was developed before Turrican 3. Factor 5 couldn't find a publisher for the longest time for Mega Turrican, so they decided to port Mega Turrican to Amiga in the form of Turrican 3 while they continued looking for a publisher for Mega Turrican. After some struggle and after the release of Turrican 3, they found a publisher for Mega Turrican. So I'm not wrong.
A lot of the MD versions were very similar to the Amiga versions, especially with the Bitmap Bros and Psygnosis stuff. The Amiga held on really well and managed to get some solid games like this long after the ST.
@@turrican3839 Buccaneer's Soundtrack Channel yeah, for me stage 1 also sounds better than the amiga version, sounds so heroic, the early drum sample is just a wonderfull way to begin the song... Best Drum samples of 16 bits era in my opinion But for expl. I preferer the amiga version of these lvls: stage 2-1, stage 3-1
Ahaha no and it’s not even close. Missing music, missing levels, missing enemies, missing bosses, no end boss (wtf), less interesting special mechanic (grapple vs ray) and so on.
An original Amiga-Turrican would have been better than a conversion. The (technically) best Amiga games were developed on it by exploring and pushing the boundaries of the Amiga. This and the decision to aim for a 512kb ram / 1 disk requirement is the reason, that many players were sort of disappointed about the Amiga version. But at that time we were happy about every class A title.
The amiga emulation here is not correct. This is not how the game sounds at all. It seems its missing somenof the sound. I know this game very well, on both this systems. Graphics are better on the Mega Drive, but sound is much better on Amiga. Just not in this demonstration. Missing the stereo, only one chanel, or something...
Very nice comparison, thanks. Mega Drive (hate calling it 'Genesis') version does perform slightly better visually with a few additional effects, which can get a bit confusing at times though. Sonically, the Amiga version is way ahead making the Sega machine sound like a child's bleeping machine. I'll have to prefer the Amiga version overall, the Megadrive's visual advantage is minimal. The Amiga's musical advantage is huge.
Nice video as usual :) What about doing some Archimedes vs Amiga? Such as: Zarch (Virus), Conqueror, Elite, Speedball II, Lemmings, Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, Pacmania
Considering the Amiga is the older system (by a couple of years) I'd say they did a pretty darn good job! The first Turrican is my favorite and was one of the games I used to play for my friends to show them how awesome the Amiga is. JW3HH
Wow. Genesis ftw. I think the fact it was designed with the Genesis in mind and ported to the Amiga is the biggest factor because the Amiga should've at least been better with the music/sound effects.
Turrican 3/Mega Turrican was developed on Sega Genesis/Megadrive as the main platform, and then it was ported on the Amiga, so it's natural that this game looks better on the console (being that the Genesis hardware is much more oriented to videogames developing). There are some details from the Genesis version that are simply impossible to make on the Amiga (OCS/ECS) without losing colors, parallax or other things. The music of Chris Huelsback, as usual, is great in both the platforms... In many levels I prefer the Amiga musics, but there are some levels where the Genesis version sounds a little better to me. Anyway I always thought that Turrican 3 graphics were "strange" (on the Genesis version too), with overabundance of "acid" colors, and that they were less detailed and polished compared to Turrican 2. The gameplay too was less variegated (no more shoot'em up levels in Turrican 3) and I remember that Turrican 2 was much longer to complete. Overall I think that Turrican 3 was a decent game, but the 2 will always remain the "top" in the series.
+Mauro “Giubileo Creations” Giubileo I think Turrican 2 graphics/style looks kinda amateurish in comparison to Turrican 3. T2 has that one-man-team look to it.
+malducci Maybe you like better the graphic style of Turrican 3, but the Amiga version, being a quick port from the Megadrive, suffers from a graphics standpoint. Turrican 2 is longer, a little tougher, more varied and, generally speaking, much more polished (compared to the Amiga version of Turrican 3), because it was developed on the Amiga as the main platform (so, no loss of colors, animations and other details).
+Mauro This sure makes a lot of sense... I personally think most Amiga versions of games look better than their ports.... but, not in this case. I don't think the differences were too extreme between these versions.
+electrodarman Yes, there weren't many differences. I think the bigger difference is in the level on the clouds, where on the Megadrive version the aircrafts platforms sometimes are moving when the player jump on them, where in the Amiga version they don't. Another big difference is in the monochromatic foregrounds and monochromatic colours of the enemies in some levels with parallax scrolling (in the Amiga version). Personally I would have preferred less parallax and more polished graphics, as in Turrican 2.
Music: Amiga Graphics: Genesis Sound Effects: Amiga Gameplay: both Background: Genesis Control: Genesis Content: Amiga Genesis Amiga 4 3 Genesis wins. But I still love the Amiga version.
The Megadrives multi scrolling parallax and background effects are awesome. They have the exact same CPU clocked the same so it comes down to display hardware and the VDPs' were hardcore back then. I think if it were made for AGA chipset it wouldve been more comparible, not that the Amigas version is bad its just that the Sega version is better.
The PC version of Turrican 2 has recently been converted over to the AGA chipset and has only been released this week. You should check out the videos, I think a 256 colour AGA version of Turrician 3 could easily suppress this Megadrive version if the same developer took it on.
If you've played any of the Turrican games and thought they were great my advice would be to play the trilogy through on both systems - the A500 & genesis as there is enough of a difference in level layout between both platforms to make it worth while in my opinion. The A500 trilogy can be downloaded from the Company website and has graphic filters, widescreen, custom button layouts & save states and is pretty excellent. Its a shame the series doesn't receive more recognition I always thought it wiped the floor with all those SNES titles that Nintendo fanboys always bang on about.
It's amazing how fucking awesome the Amiga intro music sounds compared to the rest of the music in the game. I don't know why, but the intro music blows away every other piece in the game. On the Mega Drive original, on the other hand, it's the music of all the levels that is clearly superior to its intro music. Not that the intro music is bad, it's it's incredible, it's just not AS good; a lot simpler than the rest of the music in the game. It's funny, because the Mega Drive's intro tune is clearly closer to the themes of Turrican 1 and 2, while the Amiga version is this ultra awesome remix. That being said, I wish the rest of the music in the Amiga port sounded as good. It just seems that it's trying in vain to sound like the Genesis version at certain points, when it should have tried to be better with what the AMIGA was good at. And we KNOW the Amiga is good at music. The Genesis/Mega Drive version on the other hand...holy shit. One of the greatest soundtracks of all time. I get such chills. And no, the SNES version doesn't sound better. At most it sounds just as good, with a certain SNES charm, but it clearly doesn't take advantage of the hardware like Mega Turrican takes advantage of the Mega Drive hardware, and better sounding SNES games like the Final Fantasy and Donkey Kong Country series take advantage of the SNES hardware.
Miggy for the music.. it just has this warmth to it that the MD lacks. I do have both though in my perma collection. Genesis is belter graphically overall and has the glorious controller. Mind you the Amiga is no slouch here graphically either. They are both 10/10 games, simple as that..
I feel like the Genesis version definitely benefits from the beefier graphics chipset - there's more animation and detail, plus I like the more saturated color schemes. The amiga version definitely sounds a bit more organic, though, so to speak. I've never really liked how cheap and tinny the Genesis' 2612 sounds compared to the 2151 and 2610. The Amiga version also seems to have some sprite flicker where the Genesis port doesn't.
When Turrican 3 came out (1993) the Amiga 1200 and 4000 were already out (1992), if Turrican 3 used the AGA graphics chip and was not a port, it would have looked MUCH better then the Genesis version.
I grew up with an Amiga and although I absolutely love the Genesis I am biased towards Amiga. Having said that, the Genesis version looks, sounds and plays better than the Amiga version.
The genesis game sounds way better. Having better audio quality isn't the same as having better music. The music of the MD version is miles better. Can't even understand that some people think different. One of the best music ost in that version of the game of that generation. The raw nature of the md soundchip is used to it's finest in this game.
@@SimonvCleef Cannot agree. The Amiga Version sounds miles better. Clear as the Mega Drive version might sound, it's screetchy, shrill and cold. No warmth to it whatsoever. The samples might sound a bit muffled, but at least they sound warm and natural.
Great comparison, visually the MD wins this pretty easily, it has more colours and more animations with more parallax and on a slightly larger playfield. The Amiga is the port but they could have done a better job, they seem to cut a few corners. When Turrican 3 came out I was not that impressed with it after Turrican 2, to me it had lost that polish. The music is so close yet hugely different, I can't pick a winner. Some tunes sound better on Amiga and others better on MD. Amiga has more rounded bass and the softer tones are far better, MD has more punch with certain instruments and a more upbeat lively feel to it. Sound effects are better on Amiga as usual but not too bad for MD, usually the MD has horrible sound effects to my ear. Gameplay is pretty similar but I prefer the MD version overall. As far as Turrican games go, Turrican 2 on the Amiga is the best of all versions including any C64, MD, Snes and Windows version in my opinion.
They kind of had to cut corners, an independently-made Turrican 3 for Amiga was in the works under Kaiko before that company went under, and only one remaining programmer for that version was around to work with Factor 5 in turning that into a port for the Amiga due to contract changes. The game was made for the Genesis/Mega Drive from the ground-up but the Amiga version launched first due to contractual obligations while the GS/MD version sat for a while.
Rare to see a comparison of the Mega Drive that wins out over the other machines but this one definitely does, I think T3 was a massive step backwards compared to Turrican 2 but that's a problem with the game rather than the machines.
Yeah, when Factor 5 was discussing development they decided to take things in a bit of a different direction for Mega Turrican and go for a mix between Japanese style linear stages and the exploration-based levels in Turrican 1 and 2. The result wasn't bad at all, but it still doesn't manage to outshine the first two games.
Very well representation of the typical difference between Amiga and Megadrive. The Megadrive version being more polished, immediate loading and with parallax scrolling, and the Amiga having a much more impressive sound. I personally prefer the Amiga version because of the atmosphere.
please help me out. i used to have a turrican demo for the amiga and it started out in a level that looks a bit like stage2 of turrican 3 but with biosludge in it. it also had a bonus stage where you would pilot a ship horizontally at increasingly higher speed through narrow tunnels and it would say "speed up" in typical turrican voice. i've never been able to find this.
One of my favourite game on megadrive! It was fantastic! Better graphic and colours than Amiga. Even the sound is better, Amiga is warmer but megadrive version is more energic. Mega Turrican is the best turrican ever.
There's a missing level in Mega Turrican, the music can be heard in the options, but the level is nowhere to be found. BTW, who's that brown boss that looks like a sort of lion next to the main Boss (our right) at 1:47? I can't, for the life of me, recognize him
I really would have liked to have seen a basically direct port of this to SNES, with maybe some small tweaks here and there to take advantage of the SNES's additional colour, transparency and extra background layer capabilities. Super Turrican was fine but I just think the Mega Drive game is a little better done for the most part.
sega Genesis hardware advantage over amiga was its multicolour dual playfield mode and more hardware sprites. While Amiga has dual playfield mode it can use only 8 colours in each playfield (15 total) per line, while Genesis can have 16 colours in background and i think 64 if frontplane. This dual playfield mode slows down cpu by 50% in display time, so many developers stick to normal single playfield 32colour mode. However if you are smart enough and know the hardware you can create amazing multicolour dual, three or even 4 playfield games like Jim Power, Shadow of the Beast and more on Amiga. This game looks like some better programmer took chargé in creating later levels, hence they look much better and similar to Genesis, however still software can not fix all limitations of hardware. In sound depertment i think sampled sound of Amiga wins, however in this video they sound inferior to reality and incorrectly shows amiga in worse light that it should.
interesting - some levels have parallax scroll on Amiga and some don't. Why is that? (later levels with parallax scroll on Amiga are quite comparable although less colors is visible)
Not so long ago, I learnt that the lead platform was the megadrive because of suitcases with $$$. Then it all made sense when I loaded this up in the Amiga and it sucked. Huge bummer after T2.
I had an Amiga growing up and am very biased on Amiga especially its sound but I have to say that I prefer the Genesis version of Turrican 3 / Mega Turrican. There is much more paralax scrolling and nicer backgrounds on the Genesis. The controls are much better and I actually prefer most of the music on Genesis too. Its just such an awesome game because the Amiga version is really really nice to look at, listen to and play just the Genesis version is better.
quite old video now. For me its two great games of each thier own. Its a good one floppy game (yes im did have the original, its was on one floppy, not two, the cracked versions might have came on two discs). Im perfer music on the Amiga and graphics on the Megadrive personaly. But im like both games and both versions and enjoyed both versions. This is the most important.
The Genesis version's graphics and animations are clearly better. But I like the sound better on the Amiga. Who claim that Amiga's music is dull , they don't consider that Amiga plays digital sound samples. There's a filter that the developer either turn on or not. Some turned on this filter , so that the music will not be annoying in the long run , it stays comfortly in the background . This works well . On the other hand , the voice of Genesis is synthesized , it comes directly from the sound chip which is therefore clearer and sharper than the digitized samples . Synthesizer sound cannot compete with digitalized samples that have been produced by digitizing famous musical keyboards or acoustic instruments , or noises from the real life . So in fact these aren't comparable and both have advantages and disadvantages . Of course , whoever likes it better , it's everyone's own decision . While I like the chip music too ( especially from the C64 and the Genesis) , I prefer the digitized music which is more various , more real life than the synth music. The Genesis sounds clearer, yes. But this is not the sound of Chris Hülsbeck's synthesizer, what you hear in the Amiga version. 👍 My decision: It is worth to play through both versions!
If they would have developed this on AGA-Chipset it would at least have looked equal to the genesis version. This way it was just a decent but inferior port. Would have loved to see a Turrcian III on AGA machines back in the day.
Is it just me, but the MD version sounds so much better, even through my cheap PC speakers! The Amiga is tinny with hardly any bass. Of course, it's hard to compare accurately from a video compared to the actual hardware. Then there's the additional animation, parallax effects and seemingly more vibrant colours in the MD version. Hmm.
Nice video, I must say as a Amiga fan I thing the MD verion is better, better gfx and aslo more buttons for better gameplay. The Amiga's soundtrack is very good also the MD version. But I think if Manfred Trenz have programmed this game then it blow away the MD for sure. To bad he only make bad games in the end.
GuruMediator My Amiga had a Master System controller back in 90s. I was so happy about the optional jump button in T3. But it's not like a walk in the park if you go without autofire. I did play T2 that way. So even for that there is a neat rapidfire option. I wish more of the old Amiga games had such a great support for gamepads. I like them. Well not so much in stuff like Summergames or Decatlon^^ but for for a platformer or shooter they are great... PS: how some ppl play modern FPS with a controller instead of KB&mouse is far beyond me.
Thats cool. MacGyverism at its finest. I was 12 or 13 when Turrican was released. And I wasn't that much into all that electronic stuff. Modding an old PC powersupply to support the CD,Harddisk and 040 in the miggi was one of my biggest explorations into that matter. :D Building a PC.No problemo. But soldering? I think I was not ready for the job just for the lack of deeper knowledge.Maybe reattaching a lose cable but that was it. I think they should teach electronics and soldering in every school on the planet. Just like math or biology. Not just as a sidenote in physics. It became part of our culture and our evolution. But most people could not even explain how a lightbulb works. Take away the smartphones and other neat gadgets... So why are whe keept stupid? Only some nerds and people in the industry know that everyone could build his own system from scatch. In theory. Or simply repair a broken device that we would otherwise throw away. And of course buy a new one. Perhaps I run off the track a little with the last lines.
What bad games in the end, Turrican 3 wasn't even involved with Manfred since 2 came out, after completing 2 he ended up porting Turrican 1 by himself on the NES as Super Turrican, after finishing that game he would create Rendering Ranger R2 which went through a long development cycle, after completing that he would make Turrican 3-D, which was fucking cancelled because TH-Q, the last biggest project he would make was Katakis 2 or 3-D for the game boy color, again was cancelled and from that point he never really directed any games he only assisted in developing them in small amounts.
Genesis/Mega Drive took the one all the way to the bank! better sound and graphics! The Amiga's sound was dull using boring low quality samples and it was missing a lot of the graphic detail!
Some people still seem to think that the amiga version sounds better. Strange because the md version has one of the best track of that generation and clearly sounds better. One of the best games on the megadrive too.
The Mega Drive version is superior with its graphics and non-existent loading times. I admit that the musics sound better on the Amiga, but on some levels I prefer on Mega Drive, like the last one in the video. Mega Drive victory then, but the Amiga 500 is really impressive for a machine from 1985. The MD is from october 1988. There's a more equivalent console in visual rendering, it's the PC Engine. It was released 2 years later in 1987. Well done for the Amiga. But it wasn't the same price too, and the floppy disk support plus the noise make it a less comfortable machine to play today than the Mega Drive and PC Engine.
To be more sincere, i played a lot of the Amiga version. But when i played the Mega Drive version, well it's better on gameplay, the music is not that bad( Expect Air Combat, Crane Boss, Screew Loose Hall) and have more graphical details. But anyway, the only way to ensure if what version is the better one: Play the both versions and see for yourself
Amiga released in mid 1985 (like the japanese Master System), Genesis released late 1988. That is almost never taken in consideration when comparing games on both hardware.
and price then? amiga 1000 in 1985 cost $1600, amiga 500 in 1987 cost $700, mega drive in 1988 cost $190 sega could have very well released a "mini system 16" a.k.a. the mega drive in 1985 instead of 1988, it would have still being cheaper than the amiga 1000 while still being more powerful furthermore the amiga 1200 with the newest AGA chipset was released in 1992 and cost $600 yet the mega drive still holds several technical advantages and many multiplats are still better on sega's console (chuck rock; aladdin; battletoads; flink; skeleton krew...) and by that point the mega drive only cost $100!
@@ryzmaker11 ok. You're making a confusion with a computer and a gaming console. You can actually make a Megadrive game on the Amiga, not the contrary. Check the price of a MacIntosh in late 80's, yet it was far less powerful than the most basic Amiga in the gaming department, let alone a Megadrive. But you know people we're also buying computers not only to play games but to do things a computer can do and a gaming console can't.
@@ryzmaker11 the Amiga 1200, if not as powerful as it could have been, especially on the sound department was one of the cheapest home computer with good technical capacities back then. The Atari Falcon was better but more expensive, (good) PCs were also more expensives, Mac also. Are you really comparing the price of a home computer with a 68020 and 2Mb of Ram with the Megadrive back then ? How does Deluxe Paint, Briliance or Protracker works on the Megadrive ? As for the games, at that time, most of the games were primarly designed for the stronger and more profitable console market. Amiga games were just mostly port of games made around the specificities of the MD, not around the Amiga ones.
@@matieucastel835 no confusion and I'll repeat exactly what I've just said to someone else about this: "the argument that "computers are better because I can also do work or other stuff with those" is utterly pointless. a game console is a game console and should only be compared with computers on the criterias they have in common not to mention that computers are more expensive on average making that argument even more pointless because computers don't "offer far more value" but just the aditional value that you paid for" and most amiga games can be made on mega drive except better due to the more powerful hardware. there are just a few exceptions, mostly 3D games, where the amiga and ST excel impressively well but even those - robocop 3 or world circuit for example - could be done on mega drive almost as good if not as good at all
@@matieucastel835 I'm comparing everything relevant: release dates, prices and capabilities the amiga was primarily designed with gaming in mind and what the different amiga models offered for their respective time and price is not more than what the mega drive offered at various points again: - amiga 500 = 1987 = $700 - mega drive = 1988 = $190 - amiga 1200 = 1992 = $600 and by that point the mega drive cost only $100 so: - amiga 500 vs mega drive => the amiga has the additional functionalities of a computer but the mega drive is more powerful for gaming and also has better controller with more action buttons and better media (cartridges > floppies) - mega drive vs amiga 1200 => both are technically about tied and the other criterias remain the same the point is that taking only one factor into consideration (release date or price) is meaningless in the grand scheme of things BTW by 1991 mega drive owners could invest into a mega-CD. that's an additional $300 but this offered many new capabilities (access to CD media; ASIC scaling/rotation chip; 8 PCM channels, etc.)
@@gaba665I like both versions and I've played through them both. Amiga 4 channels vs Genesis 6 channels. I'm not saying the sound is poor but overall genesis sounds much better. You are clearly just salty and resorting to mindless insults because I called you out on your bullshit in several threads. You are just a narcissistic who can't just admit when he is wrong. Turrican I and II was some of the best games ever for Amiga (Commodore 64 too), but Turrican III for Amiga is just a cheap port and is not even comparable to the two first games.
Honestly I don't understand why Turrican III dropped in audio quality and music compared to the other 2, like Jim Power used the same soundfont but it had just more oomph to it
The Amiga version should've been the better soundtrack but for some reason it ended up being much worse and I don't think the new music really solidifies it as audibly superior, stage 2 and 5 are better on genesis all the way dude, maybe stage 3.
Hardly comparing like for like. Of course the Genesis is going to be better, it game out 5 years after the Amiga 500. I'm just amazed that the Genesis isn't ahead by all that much. A testament to how truly great the Amiga was.
+Quinn The Quartz Amiga version wins in certain music tracks that particularly sound better in that version, but others do sound better in the Mega Drive version, so for me it's a tie in the musical department. And the rest of features go easily to the Mega Drive version.
+Albert Wesker yep! the amiga version often sounds muffled and weedy. the genesis sounds better most of the time. for example 4:10 and 6:23 the genesis annhiliates the amiga.
Its a good game for both systems, but not as good as the first 2 parts on Amiga or C64: this one is too linear, the first parts have a very big world to explore
Genesis - 10 years younger, 10 times stronger CPU/GPU/electronics but this movie shows the Amiga with 8-bit sound has better music, Genesis with more colours, silimar the same graphics and IMHO on the Amiga the screen is smoother scrolled. . The orginal of the power of Amiga is from Atari 8bit creators - Jay Miner. Everything good came from Atari!!!
+Miesiu K You know that the Genesis used the same CPU as the Amiga 500 right? In fact the Amiga had some pretty specialized graphics chips too, so it seems like the Amiga's version did not reach it's full potential (Probably because the Genesis offered much better sales/returns for the company, hence better development)
+mzry I read the technical details on the Wikipedia, but there are no description of video chip in Genesis. The only mentioned is VRAM and some chips for 3D. So a lot of faster memory and booster for 3D GFX. . I suppose - also chunky pixel not bitplane. If is compared something with chunky pixel with bitplane organize of GFX memory - it is a lot of faster - IMHO minimum 3 times. Amiga has bitplanes. . So resume - even 10 years Amiga play better in this game than younger and boostered Genesis.
The Genesis version is clearly better though lol. And it makes sense if the Genesis was faster like you say. I was defending the Amiga though? I was saying that it had similar capabilities but the developers probably put more effort into the 'top of the line' console where money was to be made. I think you miss-understand my view point.
Strange fact: This game was developed for the Genesis and after that was made a port for the Amiga. Nevertheless, first released on Amiga in 1993 and later on Genesis in 1994.
@@jamiewilliamson9829 i was more logic what Sega Genesis (mega drive) sound chips can do and produce...because it plays such as music sfx and smooth play into a descent manner....and yep I can't tell you which port can be original because i didn't owned none version... just jim power (pretty much the soundtracks are the same from the seme composer from turrican game series)😎👍
this video dampen certain aspects of the music in the Amiga version. I have real hardware and even on emulator the music is far more pronounced than in this video. Very easy to reach a conclusion that the MD has better music from this but despite how I still like the tracks on MD, they're definitely not in keeping with the original source. Still great tunes on both of course thanks to Chris Huelsbeck's prowess as a tunesmith. I really quite like some of the bass that MD allows in these tunes and even one or two tunes over the Amiga but generally speaking the music suffers when directly compared to it's original source
Point taken. Yes I noticed that the Amiga's audio was rather flat. I've since found a better method for capturing sound on the Amiga. More recent vids use it.
Sadly for this game the Sega was the lead platform and Amiga only got a average quality port. Reduced parallax scrolling, missing backgrounds, reduced colors in the cut scenes. The Amiga would have been able to handle the original details easily. Might have been a decision for storage space reasons. Sadly they didn't even release a AGA version for full details. At least music and sound are better, but for some reason the Amiga's music was pitched downwards. And of course the Sega version's title music includes the classic Turrican tune, while the Amiga's title music comes without it.
The Genesis version's music is normally closer to the Amiga in terms of pitch, it's just a side effect of playing the NTSC version. Factor 5 isn't exactly the best at NTSC conversions... then again, all of the Turrican's suffer a bit at 60FPS.
La version de MD es superior en mi opinion, quizas en la musica haya mas disparidad, prefiero algunos temas en Amiga y otros en MD. Sinceramente habria preferido un turrican 3 exclusivo para amiga para que esta version no quedara tan desprestigiada.
The music is honestly what makes this game so fantastic. So much atmosphere is *packed* into every song. I'm glad I got to play the Genesis version as a kid.
The scaling on Mega Drive's title screen is so smooth! We don't see that often on the Mega Drive.
Mega Drive 1988!
@@SerBallister Amiga fanboys will be just that
@@SerBallister You should take a look at Jim Power at some point.
@Nick Jackalson not saying there weren't many, but 32 colour 50/60hz was rare
Got instant Goosebumps from the Amiga Version of the Intro Music!
I forgot that Turrican 3 isn't only an outstanding platformer, but that soundtrack is really excellent too. Thanks GM!
I love the sprite rotation in the Mega Drive version, European programmers actually knew how to code back in the day, and still do today.
i like the genesis background better on the first level it has more design and the green on the alien level a bit more work on the background details such as colors or artwork.
I prefer the ominous background in level 1 on the Amiga. Plus it makes thing easier to see.
What a fantastic presentation for this video! And a very interesting comparison too. I love the music on both systems but when there's the switch it takes a bit of time to start liking the other one again! Speaking about the side by side layout- it's almost as if Factor 5 knew this was going to be made one day at 1:38... lol
The Amiga Version was done by KAIKO, not Factor 5
Amazing game on either platform, but I think the MD wins this one. Better graphics, control and over all 'feel'.
The Amiga Version had a different Intro Theme. It´s longer and sounds much better. Some of the Level Music sounds better on Mega Drive/Genesis. Both has very good tunes.
The Mega Drive (a.k.a. Genesis in US) was the finest console of its generation
+daishi5571
Just to know, who are you talking to?

The reason my original comments no longer make sense is that the post I replied to is no longer listed. What was said amongst other things no longer in the post, that the "Amiga was a stripped down MD/Gen" so you can see why I replied (I like accuracy) ask psyance ;-)
"and it also played great games! not just games" so you liked that :-) And no I was not comparing it to any specific games on the MD/Gen which was a great game machine, I was just saying that the Amiga also had some great games on top of being a great productive computer.
The Amiga 500 and MD have the same CPU, this game is of the few that is better on the MD. Most games versions are better on the Amiga 500.
***** hahahahaha funny guy
Duh the Amiga ocs is from 1985, and the Genesis is from 1989 But the most ports on the Amiga are better, like Another World, Lemmings and Shadow of the beast any meny more.
The genesis and amiga uses the same cpu, and the amiga have far better sound chip then the Genesis. Most ports are beter on the Amiga, then the Genesis.
Mega Drive version by FAR!!!
Nope
Mega Drive looks better with parallax backgrounds and don't forget about loading times, the thing this rev totally loses, MD's rom cartridge gives very fast and quiet loadind while Amigas floppys are slow and noisy and you should change them if that's more than 1 floppy game
@@RayTheVideoGuy yep
@@MrFriendsfan This is a 1 floppy game mate.
I never realized that the Megadrive version was such an upgrade, wow.
It is the original, after all! Though I'm pretty sure the music was composed with the Amiga in mind...
It was first made on Megadrive and then ported to the Amiga.
But let's be real, the SNES version is the best one
But at that time we were happy about every class A title.
all 3 turricans are 2 discs, at least I have it on 2 discs
Genesis has nice buckground and more enemy.
Amiga music very nice.
JW3HH
Music in Genesis is awesome. Much more clear and upbeat !
Also, I've never heard the Mega Drive sound like this before; F5 really knew their hardware and how to get the most out of it back then.
Streets of rage series, sonic series, shinobi, gunstar heroes, castlevania, musha, thunder force and list goes on
+Mauro “Giubileo Creations” Giubileo Well said!

Genesis wins. But I still love the Amiga version.
Music: Both too, i preferer some tracks on Genesis and some tracks on Amiga
A grand majority of tracks are far better on genesis, *especially* the boss themes, stage 2 and 5 are just better on genesis
Both fantastic version. Well worth playing.
amazing comparison! well done, thank you.
amiga sounds better but the genesis version has nice sound and more detailed backgrounds, also i prefer playing the game with the genesis gamepad
Sega Genesis!!!
The backgrounds are MASSIVELY better on Genesis. More layers and more animation (like the last stage in the video)
0:18 When amiga and genesis makes music the best
Both sound good and look alright, I didn't even know Turrican was on the Genesis.
But good lord, those cutscenes. That face.
That. Chin.
Genesis port?
It was done by a different company and wasn't factor 5, 5 would've done so if they weren't so busy making Super Turrican 2.
I grew up with an Amiga and although I absolutely love the Genesis I am biased towards Amiga. Having said that, the Genesis version looks, sounds and plays better than the Amiga version.
Well, what's the point in being biased? Why not just be realistic? The Genesis version is obviously much better.
The Genesis version naturally outdoes on visuals but the amiga's sound chip blows the everloving hell out of the genesis.
Turrican 2? There's definately a ship section in that game. Just completed it. ^^
One of my favourite game on megadrive! It was fantastic! Better graphic and colours than Amiga. Even the sound is better, Amiga is warmer but megadrive version is more energic. Mega Turrican is the best turrican ever.
Mega turrican tracks has more channels for a better drum and bass, also the tempo is sometimes better than the Amiga version
Nothing even comes close to the greatness that was turrican 2. Mega turrican will have to rest on 2nd place
I love the genesis arcade sounding chip! better
There's a missing level in Mega Turrican, the music can be heard in the options, but the level is nowhere to be found. BTW, who's that brown boss that looks like a sort of lion next to the main Boss (our right) at 1:47? I can't, for the life of me, recognize him
One of the very few Amiga games that feels like its console counterparts.
!!!
Not so long ago, I learnt that the lead platform was the megadrive because of suitcases with $$$. Then it all made sense when I loaded this up in the Amiga and it sucked. Huge bummer after T2.
It far from sucks
Miss this game
I had an Amiga growing up and am very biased on Amiga especially its sound but I have to say that I prefer the Genesis version of Turrican 3 / Mega Turrican. There is much more paralax scrolling and nicer backgrounds on the Genesis. The controls are much better and I actually prefer most of the music on Genesis too.
Its just such an awesome game because the Amiga version is really really nice to look at, listen to and play just the Genesis version is better.
Does anyone know if finding all the crystals changes the ending? Also in the version of snes?
Collecting everything does pretty much nothing oof
quite old video now.
My decision: It is worth to play through both versions!
If they would have developed this on AGA-Chipset it would at least have looked equal to the genesis version. This way it was just a decent but inferior port. Would have loved to see a Turrcian III on AGA machines back in the day.
If they had made an AGA version, it would have looked VASTLY better than the MD version

My Amiga had a Master System controller back in 90s.
Some time ago I mod a snes controller to use for my C64. 2 buttons (fire/jump) and a auto fire button ;)
Thats cool. MacGyverism at its finest.
I was 12 or 13 when Turrican was released.
And I wasn't that much into all that electronic stuff.
Modding an old PC powersupply to support the CD,Harddisk and 040 in the miggi was one of my biggest explorations into that matter. :D
Building a PC.No problemo.
Imagine calling those versions of the tracks bad, maybe Air Combat.
As an Amiga and MegaDrive fan I would have to say to close to call.
Amiga released in mid 1985 (like the japanese Master System), Genesis released late 1988. That is almost never taken in consideration when comparing games on both hardware.
and price then? amiga 1000 in 1985 cost $1600, amiga 500 in 1987 cost $700, mega drive in 1988 cost $190
sega could have very well released a "mini system 16" a.k.a. the mega drive in 1985 instead of 1988, it would have still being cheaper than the amiga 1000 while still being more powerful
furthermore the amiga 1200 with the newest AGA chipset was released in 1992 and cost $600 yet the mega drive still holds several technical advantages and many multiplats are still better on sega's console (chuck rock; aladdin; battletoads; flink; skeleton krew...) and by that point the mega drive only cost $100!
@@matieucastel835 no confusion and I'll repeat exactly what I've just said to someone else about this: "the argument that "computers are better because I can also do work or other stuff with those" is utterly pointless. a game console is a game console and should only be compared with computers on the criterias they have in common not to mention that computers are more expensive on average making that argument even more pointless because computers don't "offer far more value" but just the aditional value that you paid for"
and most amiga games can be made on mega drive except better due to the more powerful hardware. there are just a few exceptions, mostly 3D games, where the amiga and ST excel impressively well but even those - robocop 3 or world circuit for example - could be done on mega drive almost as good if not as good at all
@@matieucastel835 I'm comparing everything relevant: release dates, prices and capabilities
the amiga was primarily designed with gaming in mind and what the different amiga models offered for their respective time and price is not more than what the mega drive offered at various points
again:
- amiga 500 = 1987 = $700
- mega drive = 1988 = $190
- amiga 1200 = 1992 = $600 and by that point the mega drive cost only $100
so:
- amiga 500 vs mega drive => the amiga has the additional functionalities of a computer but the mega drive is more powerful for gaming and also has better controller with more action buttons and better media (cartridges > floppies)
- mega drive vs amiga 1200 => both are technically about tied and the other criterias remain the same
the point is that taking only one factor into consideration (release date or price) is meaningless in the grand scheme of things
BTW by 1991 mega drive owners could invest into a mega-CD. that's an additional $300 but this offered many new capabilities (access to CD media; ASIC scaling/rotation chip; 8 PCM channels, etc.)
WHAT??? THATS WHY THE ALTERNATIVE NAME IS TURRICAN 3?
MEGA TURRICAN WINS!!!!
Love my GENESIS, baby!! 😍
Megadrive slays the Amiga.
hello what program do you use to make this double cursor?
Everything was done on Sony Vegas, video sources captured via emulation.
I don't remember the sound being this poor on my Amiga. I've played both versions. Mega Turrican is clearly the better game in terms of visuals.
You are just going off your rosy memories of this game
Don't listen to that clown.. he's just a jerk-off nintendo fanboy..
@@gaba665I like both versions and I've played through them both. Amiga 4 channels vs Genesis 6 channels. I'm not saying the sound is poor but overall genesis sounds much better. Also this video has nothing to do with Nintendo so how you figured I'm a Nintendo fanboy? You are clearly just salty and resorting to mindless insults because I called you out on your bullshit in several threads. You are just a narcissistic who can't just admit when he is wrong. I know your kind very well.
@@ajsingh4545 You're a nintendo fanboy. I've seen you posting BS in other's comments.. you're an idiot. Grow up dude..
@@gaba665 Again, we see a insecure little man child resorts to name calling without presenting any viable information to prove his point. Go back to spreading false information online - you are better at that.
Turrican I and II was some of the best games ever for Amiga (Commodore 64 too), but Turrican III for Amiga is just a cheap port and is not even comparable to the two first games.
It lacks all the parallax scrolling, of which the Amiga was certainly capable of.
Anyone want to talk about the relative sound capabilities of the amiga and megadrive? I love them both but I know they are very different.
Hardly comparing like for like. Of course the Genesis is going to be better, it game out 5 years after the Amiga 500. I'm just amazed that the Genesis isn't ahead by all that much. A testament to how truly great the Amiga was.
The intro and ending sounds much better on amiga, other than that the megadrive is clearly better.
wow, not even close. genesis wins this one easily.
+ms3bani Amiga wins the sound, the graphics go's to the genesis.
+Quinn The Quartz Amiga version wins in certain music tracks that particularly sound better in that version, but others do sound better in the Mega Drive version, so for me it's a tie in the musical department. And the rest of features go easily to the Mega Drive version.
+Albert Wesker yep! the amiga version often sounds muffled and weedy. the genesis sounds better most of the time. for example 4:10 and 6:23 the genesis annhiliates the amiga.
ms3bani The Amiga was already pushed super hard for this game.
+ms3bani Genesis Wins both sound and Graphics in this case.
+Miesiu K Er? Where to begin?
+GuruMediator
PONG !
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pong
+Miesiu K You know that the Genesis used the same CPU as the Amiga 500 right? In fact the Amiga had some pretty specialized graphics chips too, so it seems like the Amiga's version did not reach it's full potential (Probably because the Genesis offered much better sales/returns for the company, hence better development)
+mzry
I read the technical details on the Wikipedia, but there are no description of video chip in Genesis.
I think you miss-understand my view point.
the megadrive is really coming into its own here. the amiga version is great, but the megedrive is even better i think...for a change
Strange how Amiga had better music but weaker graphics.. What was the point??
Strange fact: This game was developed for the Genesis and after that was made a port for the Amiga.
Nevertheless, first released on Amiga in 1993 and later on Genesis in 1994.
Awesome
that Soundtrack though.
amazing i did noticed that turican 3 , was relased
it's amazing genesis was following amigas version in a uprgraded descent way
You do realise the Mega Drive version is the original version and that the Amiga version is the port.
It's funny how the game displays a yeti near the Machine despite never including one unlike the SNES game.
this video dampen certain aspects of the music in the Amiga version.
More recent vids use it.
great stuff thanks I'll be sure to tune in for more
To be this good takes AGES. To be this good takes SEGA.
Graphics are still smoother on the amiga, but the sound of the MD/Genesis rocks more than the amiga sound.
Spoken like a true amiga fanboy
@@ajsingh4545 I never got one but a Megadrive and a friend with the Amiga 500.
The Theme sounded way better on Amiga. Except for pure techno lovers probably... The Amiga was way closer in imitating real live instruments.
La version de MD es superior en mi opinion, quizas en la musica haya mas disparidad, prefiero algunos temas en Amiga y otros en MD. Sinceramente habria preferido un turrican 3 exclusivo para amiga para que esta version no quedara tan desprestigiada.
