    these old Rod Stewart albums are just magical, they are romantic and so touching. I think his best cover was I Know I'm Losing You from this same album, but it also has Tomorrow is Such a Long Time by Dylan. But every track on this album is brilliant, and most of Raincoat, Gasoline Alley, and Never a Dull Moment are brilliant too. Very direct, emotional, simple rock-folk songs. Mandolin Wind, Gasoline Alley, True Blue, .... are not to be missed. Just get some wine, friends, maybe a fireplace and listen to those albums.

    Great choice Angela, this is off Rod's best album, Every Picture Tells a Story. Do the title track, it is as good as this one. He was at his creative zenith in this era and earned his true super stardom then. Nice job as usual, nice to hear this again! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

    Thanks.. funny what memories come from specific tracks… this takes me back to when my sister and I were teens, she had a Rod Stewart record. I remember then my father, hearing it, said something that surprised me at the time. He said: “You don’t have to have a great voice to be a great singer.” That thought stuck with me as an odd general life lesson. Thanks again, keep it rolling, Angela, this is great.

    Violin and fiddle are the same thing. In country it's called a fiddle. I think this is a mandolin, which is similar to both. Don't apologize about catching feelings that's what music does in bringing back and holding memories. Like TIME IN A BOTTLE by Jim Croce sang. There is a song called MANDOLIN WIND on this same record if you care to react to it. Also, the title track, EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY will give you the Rod Stewart we used to love to rock to. Your channel is honest because of you. Don't change. Enjoy the music.

    • @christinerobinson9372

      No, it is a violin. A mandolin has a similar sound, but it is played like a guitar, not with a bow. Here, you can hear the bow strokes. The instrument in Mandolin Wind is a mandolin.

    Rod Stewart is a very unique vocalist who has a number of successful covers as well as some songs of his own. As for the violin versus fiddle, the primary difference is in the style played. With the violin, it is played in classical, orchestral and symphonic performances. With the fiddle, you find it being used in country, bluegrass, Cajun and folk music. As far as I know, there are no differences between the bodies and the necks of the instruments, but I think the bridge might be flatter on the fiddle.

    • @christinerobinson9372
      @christinerobinson9372 Год назад +2

      I didn't know that the bridge might be different, flatter, on a fiddle. That's interesting, thank you. Dayone says that she can hear a difference. Interesting! So, I had to look it up and yes, a fiddle can have a lower bridge, making it easier to play two notes at once. The lower bridge is favored by Irish fiddle players. Otherwise, all parts of a fiddle and a violin are the same.

  • @larrycox8685
    @larrycox8685 Год назад +3

    Violin and fiddles are the same instrument. While violins are generally called that by classical musicians and country folks call them fiddles, there are a number of SERIOUS classical musicians who also call them "fiddles." Matter of taste I guess. This song is interesting in that it is almost like a musical round. It doesn't have a traditional chorus and never completely seems to resolve, but it is amazing in its simplicity and lyrical content. Nice interpretative job by Rod.

  • @christinerobinson9372
    @christinerobinson9372 Год назад +1

    A fiddle is played by country music artists and a violin is played by everyone else.😊😊 It is the same instrument, no difference at all. Edit: I have since learned that a fiddle may have a lower bridge, making it easier to produce two notes at once by bowing across two strings at the same time. We learn something new every day!

    Classic! Dig that rockin' violin! "Every Picture Tells a Story" is a really great record -- "Every Picture Tells a Story", "Seems Like a Long Time", "That's All Right / Amazing Grace", "Tomorrow Is a Long Time", "Henry", "Maggie May", "Mandolin Wind", "(I Know) I'm Losing You", and "(Find a) Reason to Believe". Released in 1971, "Maggie May" was the lead single from Rod Stewart's third studio album. I remember hearing it on the radio a lot as a kid in the seventies and bought myself a copy of the album in the late eighties that I used to play all the time for years -- well into the nineties. Every song on that album is classic. That album ranks with The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers. Ron Wood plays lead guitar on it. He would join The Rolling Stones a few years later. Dick Powell plays the violin parts. Cheer up Angela. You can be sure that thousands upon thousands of people tear up listening to the songs on this album. But the other songs on it rock and roll the listener in preparation for the heartache in songs like "Reason to Believe".

    Wow, the original version was among the first songs I ever learned, back when knowing four chords meant you were a guitar player, lolllll. 😂🤣 Powerful memories here, thank you Angela. ✌️🌹😇
    Again, no apologies needed! Most of the folks I held dear are gone now, all had particular music associated with them. It still hurts hearing some songs, but, you know, we're supposed to celebrate the ones we lost. Music is a part of that celebration.
    In this instance, back when I was still a Lil' squirt getting the hang of playing acoustic guitar, my girl cousin used to sing along with her strong soprano voice. She passed away last year, that voice will sing no longer. Yeah, the memory hurts, but I make myself remember to be grateful for what we had instead of what I lost. 😢 I know it takes time, but be gentle with yourself.
    In response to your last question, I prefer the Tim Harden version. Rod Stewart was a great performer, but I personally think this one was over-orchestrated, too much butter in the cake, as it were. 🤓🤗

    While I'm not a big fan of the fiddle/violin, I absolutely love it on this song! I had almost forgotten about this Stewart cover until you decided to react to it. So thank you very much! Mostly I had been listening to Stewart's other gems from the same album such as "Tomorrow is Such a Long Time" (that also has a fiddle contribution), and Mandolin Wind. Its not often you will find rock stars employing fiddles and mandolins in their arrangements. So Kudos to Stewart for thinking outside the box!
    Another 70's pop singer employed the fiddle in his 1973 song, "Travelin' Prayer" by Billy Joel. And The Beatles did as well in their 1968 song, "Don't Pass Me By" sung by Ringo Starr. And of course one of the most famous songs using the fiddle is "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by The Charlie Daniels Band. Lastly, there is the 1994 fiddle song, "Cotton Eye Joe" by Rednex.
