  • Henry asks, “Why on Earth do we bother with koans?” One response Henry offers, "If you are sitting with a koan, the koan will dissolve any kind of knowing and bring you into the here and now in a way that cannot be anticipated." Continuing in his study of the Gateless Gate, Henry charges ahead with Case 10 Seizei the Poor, offering some perspective on this elusive case and encouragement to those interested in Koan practice.

It's always a treat to start my day with one of your talks, Henry, and I thank you so much. You have opened a door for me that I was not expecting to find and I'm very grateful to you for that! Koan practice was never something I thought I'd enjoy, and I inadvertently came to it through your videos ... to my surprise, I've spent the past year getting more and more... immersed. Thank you.

What a gift! This koan builds on other moments that glimmer through now and then. Many thanks for your take on this!

    Seizei the Poor
“I am solitary and alone…” Yeah, well, he’s solitary in the same way that Gutei’s one finger is solitary. Master Sozan understands instantly that Seizei is acknowledging a particular kind of experience and gives Seizei a Zen high five:
    “Venerable Zei!”
“Dude!” says Zei, and high fives him back.
Hakka wine. They’re both trippin’ on the same ‘shrooms and they know it. Master Sozan tells Seizei that his cup “runneth over”. The connotations of abundance here make the perfect “yang” closure to the supposed poverty we started with.
These videos are most helpful. Many thanks to all those involved in their production.
