  • ▶ Wild animals as exotic pets
This episode will discuss the increasing trend of keeping wild animals as pets across the world, with Dr Chris Draper, Born Free’s Head of Captivity and Animal Welfare.
From the keeping of cheetahs in the UAE, to tigers in the US, even bears in the South of England, we ask whether keeping wild animals as pets can ever be justified and what the implications are for the people and animals involved.
We also follow the journey of the Lions of Lyon - the four cubs who were all rescued from different captive situations in France, including one in a Lamborghini in Paris, as they make their way back to their ancestral homeland.

Found this interview really enlightening with Dr Chris Draper’s quote”I went to Zoos when I was young because I liked animals. I now don’t go to zoos because I love animals” very compelling.

Well if we don’t breed endangered species in captivity (a key aspect of zoos) how can we be expected to help their wild populations? I see no reason to not support zoos that play an active role in conservation, even if their educational value is limited. Furthermore zoos help fund exsitu efforts (which seem to be supported in this podcast). Sorry for sounding harsh but I’m a little confused as to how this lens on conservation achieves progress.

Really eye-opening and informative conversation! Is there a link where I can find the study referenced where Dr Chris talked about the bahavioural changes of visitors after visiting zoos?

I mostly agree with them, other then wanting zoos to get rid of their animals. They want to stop them, but they’re helping. Also, when Ambika died at the National Zoo in D.C., they didn’t show the right elephant in their article. Other then that, it’s pretty good.

Really thought provoking. Sadly, I was one of those who used to go to zoos and used to take my kids too. V sobering. Keep up the good work!

I do not understand the need to keep animals as exotic pets or live ‘exhibitions’. The most exotic I get is my domestic cat and feed the hedgehogs 🦔 in the garden. I have a bird bath. I have met the hedgehog 🦔 and there is a winter home available if they need it. I put hay and gather autumn leaves. They are wild animals and should stay that way. I would get medical help if absolutely necessary but we seek they return to the wild.

Brilliant work saving animals in Africa. However, due to slavery and wealth displacement, those who had money and education, are
in high paying positions. Hopefully in the future we will see cultured people in high paying positions. Cultured people in Africa are living in slums, no water, toilets or access to medicines. The animals, which is great, are living in healthier conditions than the cultured humans. SHAME.
