#TheLighthouse
Fun fact: In the script, the two characters are simply referred to as "Young" and "Old". No names. It makes me wonder if they're actually the same person.
There's another movie called The Lighthouse (based on Edgar Allan Poe's poem of the same name) and in that movie, there was also a young and an old man on the island and they did indeed turn out to be the same person... as I understood it. It was a very bizarre movie same as this one, so I'm honestly not 100% sure, cause it also seemed like the young man turned out to be the old man's son, but then.. they were the same, then they were not. Bah, screw it all, lol.
I mean, they're both named Tom. That's on purpose in the script, so yeah.
The head of the previous caretaker in the lobster trap looks like Tom and has one eye, like the sea gull (with the reincarnated soul), like Tom in the final shot as his liver is being eaten yet again..and again. Jack (sorry, I mean Tom) had always been the caretaker of the hotel (sorry, I mean lighthouse.)
@@gggooding IIRC the film is based off of the Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy, and both the people involved in that case were named Thomas
@@gggooding No they aren't the same person Because Tom wouldn't of gone there by himself. They always send two lighthouse keepers.
The film is allegorical to the tale of Prometheus, the Titan who stole fire from the gods and gifted it to mankind. Being forbidden to do so, as punishment Prometheus was chained to a rock and forced to an endless cycle of an eagle eating his liver over and over again. The lighthouse being fire, Pattinson being Prometheus, Dafoe being Zeus/the gods of Olympus, and the island being the rock. This is just one of the several examples of themes, symbolism and hidden meanings, and I think it's awesome that a film can illicit so many interpretations.
@Johnny Cab They don't really need to. The last scene is such an obvious reference to it, that it can't be denied.
It is also partially based on the Flannan Isles Lighthouse incident of the vanished keepers.
The film defies all attempts to pull objectivity from it.
dafoe is not zeuse he is proteus, a god of the sea and a shape changer. it was said if u could be him in battle he would tell u the future. after patterson beats the shit out of him and is buring him dafo tells him his prophecy. in the legends i "think" promethius killed proteus to steal the fire to give to man kind. as punishment the eagles ( seagulls) ate his liver everyday for eternity
@@iconocast Dafoe's character is based on on Proteus, but Proteus and Prometheus never met. The story is more based on the story of Prometheus than anything with Proteus, it's just Dafoe's characterization that comes from that.
When he finally looks into the light at the end and screams is one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen.
lol
Yes. It makes me cry every ti. The intensity is.. intense. What cosmic horrors did he see in the light??
Best scene easily, one of my favorite scenes in general.
Just absolutely fantastic.
Agreed, it makes me wonder what his mind endured. His screaming perfectly capitulates a fast descent into madness.
@@GreetingsFromBlackwoodFarm The light showed him his Twilight films
I didn't think of Robert Patterson as much of an actor until I saw this and Good Time.
Should check out The Rover, he's great in that as well and it's awesome all around. Came out quite some time before those two.
The Lost City of Z too, Matt Reeves saw that film and then he knew he must be Batman
His performance in Remember Me is fantastic too
Every performance he's every done apart from Twilight is great and to be fair, his performance in Twilight is solid but the dialogue is sh*t and you can't polish a turd.
He’s a phenomenal actor! Good Time was so good!!
I thought it was a very, very, very dark comedy. And Dafoe's "Don't like my cooking" scene was AMAZING.
Robert Pattinson has aged like fine wine in both his acting and his looks.
He's only 30 something...
@@coleyounger6256 he started acting at 17 he’s been acting ever since and since twilight he’s skyrocketed in Hollywood to the point where people respect him so yeah he’s aged like fine wine thus far.
@@thehorrorcounselors4747 yes in his acting. But he's only 30 lol. Wait until he's 50, THEN tell me he's aged like fine wine when it comes to looks
@@coleyounger6256 I can officially tell ya after time travelling he looks great at 50
@@thehorrorcounselors4747 fair enough!!
Yer fond of me lobster, ain't ye?
His lobster brings all the boys to the yard.
...If I had a steak...
@@kellymoses8566 and they be “ tis better than thine.”
Classic line. Such great dialogue in this.
@@anthonyhebisen “tis bet’r than yers, ya dirty dog” more like, less Shakespearean, more pirate.
I'd imagine this is how Tom and Shaun get drunk on a Friday evening.
This movie is modern masterpiece. Dafoe not getting Oscar nomination for this part was a mistake
You giving a shit about the Oscars is the only mistake I see.
You should check out Robert Eggers’ first horror film, “The Witch”
Great film.
Very very good. Creepy, AF. Loved it. Beautifully shot.
They said they were going to soon. (One of them has seen it, the other hasn't)
Did you actually watch this video?

Just as a counterpoint, I don’t think calling this film horror does it a disservice. I think it elevates the horror genre to the broader definition it deserves. Films like this, The Shining, and Ex Machina are horror, but it just shows how far horror can go.
Exactly. Horror is no longer just monsters or big kitchen knives.
Exactly, the fear I felt in the pit of my stomach just the thought of being stranded on a island losing my humanity and sanity is a scary concept.
I must admit that Willem Dafoe should've been nominated for a Oscar for his role. He nailed it. If you guys haven't already seen it, please do a Munich video. It's an underrated Spielberg gem.
Don't sell a movie by saying it is underrated when it isn't. Movies are relative and the usage of that word is an insult. Especiallly considering how the term is used now. It can ALWAYS be applied since it's relative to personal preference. It's just insulting. Amazing movie though.
@@Gnossiene369 I think that Munich is an outstanding film. Spielberg proved that he's still the master of suspense. I only said underrated because that's what everybody else says, calling the film "too controversial".
@@JamesASharp Everything is "controversial" in today's society.
That descriptor has lost all meaning^^
@@arsenelupin9697 Yep. I agree.
@@Gnossiene369 yeah no, Munich is underrated.
Dafoe should have been nominated.
I think he should have won.
At the very least. Still the list of actors who weren't recognised for obviously merited awards is a very long one.
The invisible man a higher rating than the lighthouse and hereditary? Noo way..
I love this film and how it intertwines mythology with elements of mise en scène to explore our own human condition. I think that Collider said it perfectly “The Lighthouse combines mythology and mood to tell a story about people who don't understand themselves. Like the fire Prometheus nabbed from the gods, the light at the top of the tower represents everything, all knowledge, and in looking into it Thomas understood everything, all at once.”
"Yer fond of me lobster aint' ye?"
I love this film - mad as a box of frogs.
A24 really are the best at the moment.
"Is that a horror film?"
I've seen it 10 plus times and even I don't know!
"TIS BAD LUCK TO KILL A SEABIRD!!!!" Loved every minute of this flick, much like the Witch. The fact both are based on actual journal writings from the period just makes them so much more impressive.
**THE DESCENT** - killer horror film I would love to see you guys review!
They should take note of this comment because The Descent is a remarkable movie.
Well, that’ll be one I won’t be watching I can’t handle it lol
They've prob seen it. It's quite well recommended but if not then definitely! Also never watch the sequel. Ever.
The descent is good for giving you a real claustrophobic atmosphere, unfortunately then it becomes ridiculous
@@jameslyon2338 Already made that mistake.
These two were terribly overlooked for their acting. The awards should have taken notice. Dafoe gives a career performance here. His calling down a curse, "HARK!" is just absolutely mesmorizing to watch.
that particular speech is incredible, you can't take your eyes off the screen.
If you like WTF movies i'd definitely recommend "Mother!"
I liked Mother!, but a lot of folks just didn't get it. Once you understand what it's about, it makes much more sense. I thought it was great.
@Laniiyah Scott SPOILER!!!!
it’s biblical. I couldn’t see it at first but once you do it seems very obvious. The garden of Eden, Adam & Eve, Cain & Abel the lot...
Brilliant brilliant film 👍🔰
I really hated Mother! And, yes, I understood it and the metaphor. I just thought it was poorly done. But I loved The Lighthouse.
@@lettylunasical4766 personally I just think that one scene was way too much, for any movie. And I’m into like movies that make you like WTf but that was way too much
What a rollercoaster ride of emotional trauma and madness. Both actors are truly outstanding.
8.5
Dafoe was just amazing
He is a wonderful actor and his face has much of character. :)
Dafoe
I love this film, it's got a great mix of ancient greek mythos, old 19th/early 20th century mariner folk tales, and just of hint of Lovecraftian madness. Not to mention the fantastic performances by both Dafoe and Pattinson. A lot of checked boxes for me. Robert Eggers is a talented director.
This film is a modern masterpiece! Period. You don't see many films like this nowadays and when you end up getting a film like this you can't help but appreciate the originality.
Horror, character study, thriller, whatever you wanna call it, this is one of the greatest films of our time nothing short of a masterpiece
Such an incredibly intense film, the vvitch was just as awe-inspiring
I don’t think enough can be said about how big a role sound design played in this movie. I saw it in theaters and got more unsettled with each foghorn blast.
My first watch, I thought Pattinson was slipping when I noticed his characters accent not holding throughout the movie, but it turns out it was intentional to show that it was part of his Winslow facade
Dafoe was creepy as hell in this movie.
Always XD
Not Dafriend in this one
The curse monologue still resonates in my head.
Why shy away from the term "psychological horror?" I mean, that IS a genre. "Eraserhead," "Spider," "Inland Empire," "Psycho," "The House that Jack Built," "Antichrist," - there is a long tradition of psychological horror. Just embrace that term and quit trying to separate it.
Agreed
Agreed and I think Spider is the best of the lot, I adored that, completely mesmerising performance.
I wouldn’t call Psycho a horror movie
Wow, kudos for mentioning Spider. Very underrated movie. One of Cronenberg's finest. I hope the boys watch more of his stuff besides The Fly.
eraser head scarred me for life
I seriously hope Doctor Sleep is on their list of modern horror movies
It’s on our list for horror sequels 😊
Definitely go directors cut if you can! Great movie either way but the extra 30ish minutes gives it a lot more room to breathe! Stoked to see that reaction!
I felt the movie was a bit child oriented... it didn't feel like a genuine horror movie
@@CinemaRules please be the director's cut 🙏🏻
@@azazello1784 It's very child-unfriendly to be child-oriented :p
Have you guys seen Mulholland Drive? That film is a masterpiece.
You guys should react to *American Psycho*
fuck yes
Yes, just..... *yes*

I watched The Lighthouse in my hometown. Surprised that The Lighthouse was playing in my area because artsy films rarely get shown from where I'm from. But this was a sold out showing and it was an amazing experience. The second it ended, it received a standing ovation from the audience (which threw me off). Such an amazing film and easily one of the greatest horror film ever made.
Dafoe is just a great actor, plain and simple, he can deliver any kind of emotion just by staring at the camera.
His movie about Vincent van Gogh is also an underrated masterpiece!
saw this one twice in theaters and definitely enjoyed it more the second time, the ending still freaks me out the inhuman scream Robert Pattinsons lets out is haunting
the movie is shot in a way to make you doubt whatever you're seeing and is being told. To make you feel like you're going insane just like the characters in the movie.
Yep, I can confirm. Watching this on your own is a thrilling and very unpleasant experience at the same time.
I watched this opening night (for the UK so where it didn’t come out until January 2020) and it was legitimately one of the best cinema experiences I’ve ever had
There are scenes in this movie...that are so perfect that they will be with me for the rest of my life.
For another recent period film, check out The Favourite, if you haven’t already. Excellent historical movie with some interesting modern style filmmaking, and top notch acting.
I would love a reaction video to "THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE AND HER LOVER". You guys rock!
That film is batshit crazy but mesmerizing.
The dialogue and the interraction between those two talented actors is what makes the film.
This is already a classic and will no doubt be a reference point in cinema in the future.
Really hoping to see your reaction to The Witch soon. God i love that film.
I loved the sound design of the Siren screams, so terrifying.
This absurdist horror is one of the strongest EVER.
Also I saw that poster for Ready or Not. Another kickass horror flick!
"What's he doing? Oh..."
Such a weird film, wasnt sure if i even liked it after watchin it at the cinema, had to watch it again, now i love it
exactly my thoughts. First time I was like well that was a bit weird but I kinda liked it. Watched it again a couple of months later and loved it.
The Lighthouse is a retelling of Prometheus and Proteus.
The music you were talking about that's associated with Death is called Dies Irae. It's an old medieval hymn about the coming day of God's judgement and wrath. It's been used in all kinds of films such as the main theme for The Shining or when Luke Skywalker saw the dead bodies of his aunt and uncle. Here's a link to the original piece as it would've been sung in the churches of old:

My little sister is big on all movies and especially movies that don’t necessarily get the recognition they deserve. She takes me to see any movie I’m willing to go see with her. When this first came out she took me to an older small theater that would show what they call independent movies, we drank beers and ate popcorn and I got to tell you it was an experience. And I honestly gotta say I didn’t know wtf was happening lol. But what a intriguing and ‘aww struck’ movie this was the performance was on another level. There are many words to describe this movie but I always settle with one “Crazy!!”
Whenever someone mentions molasses... I think of that scene. This style of filmmaking is sooo brilliantly insane
I remember seeing this in theatres with my friends, I was so exhausted and blown away that I didn't want to talk about the movie for a bit. We talked about it for days afterwards though. Dafoe and Pattinson are outstanding in this film and I love that it is in black and white. I only wish I could've seen it with subtitles in theatres, as English isn't my first language and I did have a bit trouble understanding everything lol! I hadn't seen The Witch until recently and I think it's interesting to see the correlations regarding the style of the two movies, especially the way dialogue is written - or rather the scenes without dialogue. All in all, I find this movie very disturbing but an absolute gem.
I saw this in the cinema and couldn't stop thinking about it for a week after.
One of the best films to come out in a looonng time. The witch is really good too
I absolutely LOVE this movie, this should definitely be seen in a cinema if possible since the sound just makes it so much more engrossing.
How did you watch this movie without subtitles? It's going to change the whole experience when you know what they're actually saying! I love the movie but I can completely understated if people don't. It's not for everybody.
This made me laugh 😂 it's very true! I watched this film first in theatres barely able to understand anything and then at home with subtitles and wow what a difference... especially Dafoe's long winded speeches got a lot more out of me when I was able to understand what he was actually saying
English is not my first language but i can watch movies without subtitles and understand perfectly but with this one i had no fucking idea what willem was saying lol
Both this and Egger's other film The Witch greatly benefit from subtitles lol
I honestly had no issue understanding it
Don't forget Mike Flanagan! I think he is definitely up there as one the best horror directors in recent years 😉 He is the showrunner of The Hunting of Hill House and of Bly Manor. My favourites films from him are Oculus, Ouija: The origin of evil, Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep (the two latter ones being Stephen King adaptations).
I often find that I don't always like certain movies while still being able to appreciate the mastery required to make them. The Lighthouse is great... I also don't like it.
This is such a great film, it’s also one that gets better with multiple viewings too. I love how the ambiguity and surreal nature of it all allowed Robert Eggers to play with so many different themes and concepts in such out there ways without it feeling forced or out of place. He also wrote it in such a way that it can be interpreted in so many different ways that can all make sense with whats shown in the film, it’s so crazy and bizarre but feels tighter and more cohesive with every viewing.
The Lighthouse is an analogy on the mythology of Proteus & Prometheus. Much of the imagery refers to that. Brilliant film and criminally ignored by the Academy.
Great movie. I love the cinematography in this one. It does such a great job of making everything seem close and claustrophobic. I knew you guys would love the psychological aspects.
One of the few movies that had me literally sunk from the get go. Its eerie, dark atmosphere pulled me in like a conscious nightmare I did not want to wake up from.
Was hoping to see the "You fancy me lobster!.." scene.
"I hope it's a vehicle for good performances" Oh yes indeed.
What I find intriguing about this film is the fact that what state of mind you're in-or perhaps what kind of personality you are-determines whether you think Winslow is going insane and just hallucinating or being gaslighted by Wake who has hypnotic powers granted by his possession of the lighthouse lamp. To me, the latter was the obvious answer upon my first viewing, but I was surprised by the fact that the standard interpretation is the former. The film, however, defies any attempts to derive objectivity from any of its material. Even the scene of Wake hypnotizing Winslow by firing a beam of light from his eyes (inspired by a drawing called "Hypnosis" by Sascha Schneider) cannot truly be qualified as objective because it could also be a hallucination caused by drinking turpentine.
I highly recommend the special edition of Angel Heart if you haven't already
An Alan Parker classic.
Holy smokes, why do you want to scar them with that film? I thought you liked these guys?!? Lo
There’s a great conversation between Robert Eggers and Ari Aster on the A24 podcast you guys should check out. They spend most of it geeking out about Ingmar Bergman lol
Got to see this one at the theater in 2019 - what an experience! I love this film. Thanks for all the great reactions.
Watching bit again, it really is like a modern day shining. The isolation, the freak accident that traps them for longer than they should, the cabin fever, the previous worker who went mad, random naked woman, even the way Patterson and the Johhny guy seem to forget that encounter the moment they change scenes, as if illustrating their slow descent towards insanity
I love this film, so unique and well made. Superb performances by both, especially Dafoe's epic monologue - the lighting and his facial expressions, just brilliant.
Really looking forward to The Witch video as that's probably my absolute favourite modern horror!
This movie is one of my favourites. Something else between all those superhero/starwars etc. action, put your brains on the shelf films.
i haven’t seen this film since it came out, seeing it again made me remember how uncomfortable it made me feel. it does such a great job of creating scenes that make you feel like you’re descending into madness.
You two are ace... lots of background info, lots of technical knowledge and lots of enthusiasm! Keep em coming 👍
Robert Pattinson..... I scrubbed to the floor three times over
William Defoe..... Yeee lying dog.
😂 Best line ever
I love this movie so damn much
The Adventure of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 2005- Full Movie HD what movie name plz
Sound design was superb as well. The old-timey foghorn din in the background... I can’t believe you haven’t seen the VVitch! That’s your next movie boys!!
Willem Defoe proves why you should hire theatre trained actors, they can just turn this intensity on and just command a scene, with their sheer presence.
+Cinema Rules apparently the type of process they used and they actual film reel they used itself to record on caused them to have to use incredibly bright lights so the sets (and I’m not just talking about the scenes with the light of the lighthouse) were often so bright that everyone except the actors had to wear special sunglasses. And apparently the actors often times couldnt even see what was happening because it was that bright! WHICH IS CRAZY BECAUSE THE FILM LOOKS SO DARK!
Another fun fact they really actually filmed out there during thee worst seasons so everyone was soaking wet and freezing cold. THE SCENE WHERE THEY SEE THE STORM BLOWING IN WAS ACTUALLY A REAL STORM AND LIGHTNING!
Also the director used a special filter to make the actors look as bad, grimes, and disheveled as possible in every shot except for the shots of the “real” mermaid.
MEIN GOTT, the bass on my headset while watching this makes it even more intense!
Watch people react to this masterpiece is one of my hobbies.
I cant be the only one who would love this job?
I wasn't sure what to make of this movie first time I saw it but did like it. On second viewing I really loved it. Both performances were amazing.
This was one of the last films I saw on the big screen and good god THAT was an experience
When madness is involved, even the camera is an undependable narrator.
Incredible acting and directing. Love this film
Robert Eggers and Ari Aster (Midsommar, Hereditary) are my two favorite up and coming directors. IMO The Witch is on par with The Lighthouse. You should give it a go lads.
Literally just watched this for the first time last night
The Adventure of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 2005- Full Movie HD what movie name plz
The cinematography was nominated for the Oscar.
I really enjoyed this film but found it incredibly disturbing. In a strange way, it reminded me of the David Lynch film "Eraserhead," which is considered one of the most disturbing films ever made, if not the most. It's the only film that's made me feel a bit crazy while watching it. You guys should definitely react to Eraserhead. Love your reactions! ☺
1:20 "The Northman" looks to be an adaptation of the Scandinavian legend of Amleth, which Shakespeare's Hamlet was directly based on.
Once you understand the mythology, the symbology and the meaning behind the movie and the characters, this is without the doubt one of the best movies in the last 20yrs. Robert Eggers is a genius.
I absolutely love this movie but no one I know likes it so it was really cool to see how much you guys appreciate it. I was one of the ones that was really looking forward to this reaction. Can’t wait to see the one for the witch! You guys are great
I watched this film alone, and my reaction was one of disgust, not for the movie but for the horrible visuals, setting, isolation, madness, and I felt imprisoned by it. It was just too depressing, stifling, and spiritually killing.
Watched this at an Arclight in Hollywood and was the ONLY person in my theater!! Wild experience!!
the only direct quote I can remember from this movie is
"Yer fond of me lobster, ain't ye?"
but also HAAAARK
HARK!! I’m a little bummed the best part of the movie wasn’t in the reaction!
Hope you guys can get around to watching a David Lynch film sometime, I'd say Blue Velvet is the best introduction to his work or if you really want to jump right into the deep end you could try Mulholland Drive or even Eraserhead
Seeing you guys watch such a movie like this makes me happy. It’s a vision to behold, it has so much to its build in perspective
