  • We kicked off today's show with a bit of time travel - we're heading back to the period of wartime music and over the top fashion. Our first guests of the day love the 1930s so much, they've ditched modern life to immerse themselves in the era. Ruth Shelley and Robert Oestman join us live from Ruth’s home in the West Midlands to tell us all about their love for the 1930s.

I love the 1930s too, but we did have the great Depression here in the United States, so not sure how happy it was.

You do make a great point!! 😅 It was definitely hard for many for sure, but I don’t know, I’m sure I over glamorize it, but it just seems people made the best of things and kept going and were happy anyway. The music stayed upbeat and happy as well.
Wish I could visit the era!! I love that my grandparents got to live through it. How I wished I had been mature enough as a child/teen to ask them about it before they passed away.
They were both entrepreneurs. I wonder if they went through hard times. How crazy that I don’t even know. :/ I’ll have to ask my mom if she knows!! Maybe they told her about those times. It’s so crazy how far removed I am from that era, and yet, my own grandparents were there (at least one set anyway-the others were kids during that era, because my grandmother had my mom at 40).

I think this is lovely! They do this so well. Maybe it’s a fun thing to do for them. I just love it. Also!..I kinda think that these clothes, plus say periods before and after that, ‘20’s, ‘40’s, 50’s? - it seems to me that folk wore proper dignified clothes. Folk also had not qualms too about repairing things. Sewing on that button, darning that hole, patching things up - doing that nicely - taking pride in your mending, passing things down and being grateful for things you wouldn’t otherwise have, but for someone’s thoughtfulness to give you once they’d eg, grown out of it or suchlike. Valuing things more. It is a lovely salute to the past. Much respect to this couple.

I wonder if there were people from the 1930s that lived like people in the 1830's and so on and so forth.

Because the guys that ask questions are quite annoying, the lady just said that the other lady looks good, while they both look good. Then the guy started to cut the 1930 lady mid speaking just to ask her a different question before she even finish her story.

Don't forget, in the 1930s, the British still had something of an Empire... British India, the African colonies, etc.
