I got this pen and very pleased. Some shops sell them for $180 - a bargain price for the gold nib pen. Mine is Blue Obsession with Rhodium, this color/trim combination is discontinued, but some shops still have old stocks. Due to inlaid nib, it doesnt dry up very quickly and it's great tool for note-taking, without putting cap on and off all the time. Regarding the leak inking from breather hole, I use the trick: when draw ink from the bottle, I push few drops of ink back to the bottle, and draw air back. I use it like this and mine doesn't leak from breather . Also, the cap is sensitive to the orientation. There is notch on it. If you put cap randomly, it does wobble. I found the position in which the cap is secured in place and doesn't wobble. Actually I never need to put cap on during my working day, because I write continuously short notes with 3-5 min intervals, and the pen doesn't dry up.
I bought one of these in the black lacquer finish with gold trim and fitted with the broad oblique nib for Christmas. I am getting myself accustomed to this pen, ss my other fountain pens are Parker Sonnets all fitted with broad italic nibs. But so far, so good
There is an inner sleeve in the barrel.. over the yearsvive had and used mine, the sleeve twisted and it can be rotated back but it is not easy.. I use it and love the pen and accept that flaw. I have a fine and had a medium that I had converted to a cursive italic.. wonderful fountain pen.. thanks for your work! Frank in Colorado
Thanks Frank. Yes, somebody told me about this shortly after I posted the video, and it worked fine. Mine wasn't too difficult to adjust. Look through the comments and you should be able to find their post. I really like this pen, and hope to buy one or two more in the future.
Update: I now have a Carene Marine Amber fountain pen with an EF nib. I have to say that it's the smoothest fountain pen I have ever used! It's lovely - frankly I can't fault the design. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a special personal pen.
Yes, I'm looking forward to inking mine up again soon. Did you find your EF nib writing more like a F? I ordered a F because it writes more like my preferred medium.
@@thepenman357 Actually yes. I like gold nibs because they don't scratch the page. This EF works smoothly and the line is a bit thicker. I'm happy with it, but I do agree that Waterman's nibs do seem broader size by size.
This is a great pen! I'm glad my channel was a help to you in fixing the alignment. The alignment problem was disturbing to me when I first go the pen.
Thanks for the compliment, Joey! Thankfully, there are some other good reviewers out there, and we all have a bit of our own style, and our FP community benefits from that variety. I do enjoy making the videos, and I'm glad you feel benefitted from them. Have a great day and a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
I've just bought the Carene ballpoint pen. I love the weight of it - I find that a good weighted pen improves my handwriting! It is beautifully designed and I love the red-brown barrel, very elegant. Thank you for an informative review of the fountain pen. I've always loved Waterman and Cross pens, they are very durable, practical and attractively designed. The Carene is my new favourite!
I'm glad you've had a great experience with their ballpoint. Yep, I love the fountain pen, and am looking forward to it coming up in my rotation again. Thanks for watching!
A note to all. In a comment below, Kevin Zheng mentioned another FP reviewer that had a fix for the issue of the barrel finial not aligning properly with the nib. The reviewer's channel is WaskiSquirrel and in the video I'm giving you the link where you can find the fix at 2:13. I tried it and it worked for me. ruclips.net/video/5lnU0Vt9-HA/видео.html
good video which can be watched with pleasure. For alignment, someone explained it to me a long time ago and it's good that you put this link at 2.13 minutes. I have this fountain pen since 28 years and it has never left me, I have tried others who are wonderful writers, but I always come back to it, I have three blocs , stub, medium and extra fine nib , to vary the pleasures ...
This is an absolute gorgeous pen. And I am sideeyeing this beauty. Unfortunately with my current occupation this is a bit of a fever dream, but thank you for the review so I can sigh wistfully at it until things look up for me
I can definitely relate to that. The more expensive pens I own were bought when I was making and selling pens. These days I haven't bought any pens that cost more than $50, I think. Someone commented not too long ago that if you save a small amount here and there, over time you can get the funds for the "nicer" pens. It may only be $5 here $10 there of savings, but it does add up. But I do understand that once you get enough there oftentimes seems to be some other need that is more pressing to tend to. Sooo, there goes that savings. But, hey, it's worth a try.
Thinking of getting a Carene DLX (which is as gorgeous as this Marine Amber) as my next pen.. Glad to know that you didn’t have Hard start/Flow issues which I’ve heard in some reviews.. I’ve also heard that the nib is smooth, but equally stiff ( since it’s inlaid ).. All in all, it’s the elegance and beauty of this pen that’s making me drool over it !
Hello, Sathish. It is a stiff nib, but I don't use flex nibs anyway. I prefer to simply write with a smooth nib. For line variation I use a stub nib. However, one day I do hope to try a true flex nib to have that experience. Who knows I might get hooked on them. Thanks for watching. Have a great day! - Mike
I recently received a generous birthday check, and was torn between another Carene or a Diplomat Excellence A2. It was a difficult choice, but I went with the Diplomat in order to complete my collection of those. Next time I'll most likely get another Carene.
Good review, I'll say about the cartridge converter. I bought a couple recently fir only $8 with free shipping. Mind you my old one lasted 20 years. And still works, just gets a bit of ink behind the plunger. Not enough to cause issues but still. Definitely not an expensive proposition.
@thepenman357 Best part is it was a Waterman Phileas. A relatively inexpensive fountain pen my parrents bought me from an office supply store.😆 Can't ask for better than that. And how many ball points I would have used and thrown away. It's pretty economical and saves a lot of plastic from the landfill.
Yes, indeed, this pen is a current model. They are available in many styles, although you may have to check a variety of online retailers to fine that perfect one for you. The Amazon link in the description will take you to this specific model. Enjoy! And thanks for watching.
All of my pens I've had to order online. I could have bought a Metro at on shop, though a long drive from where I live. Finding good FP's in a brick and mortar shop is a challenge. The closest FP dedicated store to me is 3.5 hrs away - Vanness Pens.
Thank you very much for your comment. I have stores relatively close, some less than an hour away, the problem is that we have very few brands and there is not as large a community of users as in other countries. I'm a bit old-fashioned and I like to buy directly from stores, as time goes on I'll have to convince myself to buy online. Greetings from the city of Mexico
I'm not quite understanding your question, but my clip does not wiggle, and the cap stays securely posted if I write with it that way. If I drag the pen across the page by holding the end of the cap (or body) it will write a nice line.
The Carene is one of my favorite pens, but I've had a soft spot for anything Waterman since I was a kid and first started using fountain pens almost sixty years ago. Unfortunately, there is no standard for what makes a nib an extra fine, a fine, a medium, etc. Each company sizes its own nibs, so you can never be sure exactly what you'll get. It is worth nothing that the Waterman converter is one thing, but Waterman cartridges will fit any pen that uses standard international size cartridges. Waterman is the number one cartridge used with Chinese made pens. The same is true of Montblanc. Montblanc cartridges will also fit any pen that takes standard international cartridges. The only cartridges I uses for my cartridge/converter pens that take standard international cartridges are Waterman, Montblanc, and Diamine. It's a shame my Pilot and Cross pens can't use them.
Thanks, James, for your input. It's nice to know that their cartridges are universal (at least with SI pens. I didn't know that the Chinese pens used them, pretty interesting. Thanks again.

Thanks for the question. I don't know about the issue with Amazon in India, sorry. I've found that Amazon generally isn't much cheaper with the expensive pens than online stores are. If you buy, then, I would buy from a reputable online retailer like Pen Boutique, Appelboom, and the like. Regarding the other Watermans, I haven't used a Hemisphere or Expert, so I could not give an opinion on either. I also stick with fountain pens, and only use ballpoints when a fountain pen might not work. Have a great day!
I really wanted to like this pen, but I sold mine because it's useless to me. I take lots of notes for college courses, and I just couldn't deal with the number of "skips" due to the "sweet spot" with this pen. It's not a very versatile pen.
Sorry to hear about your experience. I have experienced the "sweet spot" dilemma on another pen or two, but not on this Carene, anyway. I hope to be able to get another one at some point, so hopefully I won't get the bad experience then. Just curious, what is your favorite pen?
@@thepenman357 I'm still trying to find my favorite pen. Lately I've been taking notes with a Diplomat Excellence with oxyd finish. I like pens with larger nibs, snap-cap, and center of gravity towards the nib. If you have any suggestions that match those attributes, I'd love to hear them!
