Turned? Injection Molded? 3D Printed? Which is Best for Making Fountain Pens?
Просмотров 3543 месяца назад
There is debate as to the best quality manufacturing process for making fountain pens. Are turned pens better? Or is injection molding the way to go? what about the evolving technology of 3D printing? In this somewhat lengthy video I explore the viability of each of these three processes.

@@Govindan1640 Nice!
Have both, Twsbi Eco for my daily office stuff and Lamy Safari for my field/travel notes
@@vapa117 Best of both worlds. That's the way to do it.
Classy for me is something like a vintage Parker, probably the Duofold. I came here while looking for a metal (steel) pocket pen and I am certainly going to get this one. Thanks for the detailed video.
@@anujupadhyay10 You bet. I haven't inked mine up in a while, but it's on the docket.
Bought one in Fine and an extra EF nib. Thank you.
Bro what is price and how have it is
@jasleenkaur-cu9gy prices change, simply Google it. Or search on ebay, etc.
Could you please use the associated converter to show us some writing samples to see if it is smooth like that with the dip method. Thank you.
@@am_ma I've used both with the converters, and they are both very smooth. You won't be disappointed.
@thepenman357 Thank you.
What wrong w people, It's called respect for people you idiots
I had a x159 and bought a 9016 recently. My x159 performs always good but I can not say the same for my 9016. It has ink flow problem and gets dry.
@@hmjeon8609 Sorry to hear about your 9016. I'm wondering if since it's such a large pen, if the writing angle needs to be adjusted. Also, you might want to check the feed to see if there's any obstructions in it. You'll need to remove the nib and feed to check all around the feed. Just some ideas.
@thepenman357 Thank you. I tried several easy remedies found on the net, but it is still not wet enough. May be, it will get better over time.
When I first received my fountain pens they also came with blue ink which was really weird
I can't remember if mine did or not. It would be rare for that to happen, I think. Congratz on the bonus ;)
When I bought my pen a few months ago I looked to see if anyone reviewed this black one. There were reviews on many of the other colors but not the black one. I continually kept looking at the black pen even though I normally don't buy black pens. When I got it, I knew I made the right choice. That gold and silver in the black is amazing and it's a very wet writer with a smooth nib. I never had to do a thing to the nib.
@@Tia-p5f it's nice when it works out that way.
I have two of these, one with a med nib, and one with a fine nib. They both write beautifully. However, to make this pen better, they should shorten the cap or finial by about a cm. It's just too long to fit in my pen tray! And they should also put a normal clip on the pen. Then it's perfect!
a much appropriate description/nick-name to this pen should be "Chinese Oversized PILOT Namiki FALCON" that is fun to mod, joy to personal preference.
Probably stupid of me, but I just can't fathom buying a pen at any price that only has as its brand name "Oversized Size Metal Fountain Pen". Well, maybe if it was 3 bucks, but $30? Guess I'll have to pass. Haha.
For sure, buying unnamed pens does come at some risk. However, after doing my own research I felt at least as confident with this purchase as I did with too many others. The commenter below (steamdevilspenpit) mentioned that the pen originally came with a "JD" nib (which is included with the pen along with the Jinhao nib). Was "JD" a company? Or was it a nib maker that the company used. I'm not sure. These Chinese pen makers change their names often, or they market the same pen under multiple names. Crazy, I know. Given what I've paid for other Chinese pens, this one is reasonably priced. It is well built and writes nicely. But, you have to like large heavy pens, because this one surely is that.
30 sec knowledge, 16.46 video. So boring 👎🏼
i like you taste...
I don't have an 823, but the ability to hold a lot of ink is important, and I know that pen is comfortable for me to hold, and it's a Pilot. I should probably buy one. If they made them with steel nibs, and better colors, I'd already have one. I'm not impressed by gold nibs. If I drop it, which would only be a matter of time before thst happened, I'm possibly very screwed; that's kind of why I'm hesitant to buy one. And really, does gold write that much better? Those boring colors don't motivate me much either.
@Richard-1776 The Pilot brand, in general, is not much for pazzaz. They are more the subdued classy pen company. Montblanc is the same way, only their flagship pens are much more expensive. As for the colors of the 823, I only like the amber. But then, I'm more into earthtones when available. You have some legit points, for sure. Thanks for the input.
The matte finish looks so classy.
@NringePhi yes it is. However, I do also like the brown and gold model. It was a hard choice.
I had one long long time ago. It was the smoothest writing pen.
dark blue or green?
Blue, but I understand why you ask. At some angles it does look greenish.
@thepenman357 Thank you. It has beautiful sheen.
I’ve got both. The A2 you have to carry in a pouch. The Aero is a more hardy, less easily damaged. The diplomat steel nibs are the best in the business.
Yep, those steel nibs are great.
Preppy would be match for colors and more affordable.
@SKYHI. Of course, the clear Kakuno could match with any ink to make it that color.
Great review! Probably gonna pick one up for Christmas 🎄
@@cabbagereviews8513 You'll be impressed. Mine is still holding up well.
Any idea where I could get a feed for a hooded type jinhao safari type. Looks similar to the standard feeds but has a 3mm needle tip for a 3mm nib
@shaugnmetapsi probably your best bet would be to buy another Jinhao and swap the feeds.
I bought a Lanbitou Twist after seeing your RUclips video. And I can honestly say I am not disappointed. Writes smoothly. Thank you for letting me know about this pen.
Hello! I have recently ordered a sheaffer 100 fountain pen coffee edition.I am a left handed and my handwriting isn't really good.i have ordered a medium nib. Will that be fine. Thankyou
@@Vijay_Krishna_ I bet you will enjoy it. I really like the coffee theme.
Kakuno ❤
@@NitishDiwakar Nice fit in the hand, and a smooth writer. Thanks for your input.
I decided to take a drink at the word "girth." I killed two bottles and died of alcohol poisoning.
I love mine. Writes beautifully and is comfortable to hold.
@@lisep5575 Yeah, it seems a nice size and weight. And you have to love that large converter.
@@thepenman357 indeed! I appreciate knowing a full tank of ink will give the writing mileage I need, especially for writing away from home. I love the weight and use mine posted. It handles shimmer inks very nicely. The price is a ❤. I’m about to purchase a couple more. I note that it’s now available in blue and a translucent white.
Mr. Pen Man, I think the life lessons idea it's a great one. Many people including me, need some guiding from time to time. Wish you the best for your well deserved retirement. Respect.
Thank you, I appreciate it.
I was late to the party with fountain pens and your channel, but i have always enjoyed going back through and watching your reviews. I'm thankful to hear your not stopping completely!
Thanks Mike! Looking forward to your new direction!
Well. Good luck. I watched this video all the way to the end. I'm still not exactly sure what you'll be doing next. But, good luck!
@user-gl5ld9vm7i LOL, yep, that's me, clear as mud. I'm wanting to focus more on actual writing, and also a couple of different genres RUclips videos. I won't be buying and reviewing pens as frequently, but when I do get a new pen I'll review it.
❤
thanks for sharing, and keeping the love for fountain pens going
Honestly a pretty smooth nib. Would recommend. And yea they do SOME QC on these. Mine came with some blue ink in the feed. Very cool.
Thanks for your review, was really helpful. Gonna get one of these beauties for myself!
I don't buy from companies that steal designs. It's unethical and it's hilarious why some people think this is some deep thing that warrants discussion.
FYI, When the cap is posted, it grips the piston on the back end of the body of the pen. So if you inadvertently twist the cap while it is posted, it will turn the piston as well, pushing ink out of the nib. Otherwise, it's a great pen.
@davester1432 Yep, good point. This especially happens when the blind cap is twisted out a little. Other pens, like the Eco, have this issue, too.
I have an Older Lovely Blue Waterman pen...have 2 Blue cartridges and ( probably the converter?) We put the cartridge in the pen but still no ink comes out? ( unless it is dried up?) tried to find "how to use" and all I see is "reviews?" any help would be appreciated!😊
This pen is no longer made but probably all waterman pens put in cartridges the same way? 🤔
@@JANETCLARK-f4r I believe in my "Fill Dat Pen" video I deal with that issue. Basically, you have to set the pen vertical , nib down, and wait for about 30 minutes. That's an average time, of course. You can also give the cartridge a couple of squeezes, which should push some ink into the feed faster.
When using a cartridge, run the nib under warm water with the nib facing down for a few seconds to get the capillary action going, then lightly pat the excess water off with a tissue before writing with it, hope this helps as it's always worked for me. When using a converter you won't need to do this as the nib is dipped into the ink to fill it.
@darkoz1692 Nice tip, thanks for sharing. It's one I'll try the next time.
This video was very helpful for me! Thanks for all the detail in your explanation. It made it very easy for me to follow along step by step ! My pen feels great now!
@@MissLexus92 Great, glad to help!
my X750 nib is so big i think its medium
@goblinscout9571 Jinhao nib tips, as with a lot of Chinese nibs, are more like European sizes, but are not as consistent in their sizing.
they’re doing a Parker clip thing!:)
@anguswhite8233 Yeah. But it's different enough. The spear end doesn't have an arrow head.
you don't write with the finial. get over it.
It certainly wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me, but I just thought I would point out the fault. When - if - manufacturers see these reviews it's a good opportunity to know what's wrong and to make changes. trust me, it didn't ruin my day :D
@@thepenman357 i agree, you're right!
If they make something celebrating European history/culture i'd buy it. That's cool, but not these days. I couldn't do it.
So far, I don't know of any fountain pens from Chinese manufacturers that are specifically dedicated to European/Western cultures. The only thing that could be interpreted in this way is the Fuliwen 2085 (Eagle Knight), although it hasn't been explicitly designated as such. The only historical themes are cultures and/or events from Chinese culture and the Middle East and parts of North Africa. Which is a real shame, because I would certainly enjoy topics related to Western cultures.
@@steamdevilspenpit I mean I like ancient Egypt a lot, and it’s basically part ofd Western history. When zI was a kid, the first thing I wanted to be was an archeologist or Egyptologist. It’s weird, how right I was at such a young age. Of course I’m not either of those things, but I love ancient history. They could make so many cool pens based on Greek Mythology, or the Romans. I’m was complaining, in light of the culturally Marxist times…. I would buy that pen. Ancient Egypt is cool, but I’d really like an ancient Greek themed pen. Opus 88 made a Medusa pen, then included sum moronic half-witted literature saying it was some sort of women's rights pen…Don’t they know the goddess ( i.e.,m a women), Athena turned Medusa into a gorgon? Idiots, lol. I don’t expect anyone to know that, but, if I were making a Medusa pen, i’d certainly research Medusa. No sense at all. Welcome to the 21’st century.
Next pen on my never ending list. Thank you.
I have both of these and I like the size of them both, but I find the nib quality on the 9016 is better, and I love the double size converter. I have the 9019 as well but I find it too big and I rarely use it.
@LewisLittle66 Yep, the 9019 is a beast. I have to use it exclusively when I use it, because writing with a thinner pen along with it makes it seem really huge.
Another bonus tip: I solved the spring issue with an 8x0.5x30mm spring off eBay.
@@oleleclos Thanks for the tip
It is the "Fuliwen 2055 Egypt" from the "Ancient Civilizations" Series. There still exists a version I call "1001 Nights" or "Arabien Nights". It's copper/gold colored and shows a lot of arabic architecture and symbolism. Call it the big brother of the 2044, wich comes from the same series an maybe represents the lost Civilization of Atlantis. I rather like to call him "Neolithic period". I presented both models (2044 & 2055) on my channel in a double feature (but only in German). Just a little information so that you have the correct model name (model number) for this fountain pen. Best regards from Germany SteamDevil
Awesome video. It looks like you could stack another tray on top of the pens to double the storage.
Yep, you're right. Thin to medium sized pens would work best with that, but that's what most our pens are anyway.
@@thepenman357 I have some cigars boxes that I might utilize with those tray. I did look we link you provided. I did see other variants of same drawers on Amazon I saved your link and another for about $34 I believe.
