Deep Cleaning The DIRTIEST Van I've Ever Built | 12 Hour Smoker Van Transformation
Recently, I've been converting a Ford Transit Connect into a home on wheels, and this video details the first step in that process which is cleaning the van. This van was a smoker's vehicle before I purchased it, and it has a very powerful lingering smell from the cigarette smoke. My goal in this video is to clean the van so thoroughly that there is no cigarette smoke smell left over and it is a comfortable space to sleep, eat, and relax on a daily basis.
I explain all of the different tools, chemicals and cleaners that I used in order to transform this van into a useable space during this video. This was by far the dirtiest van that I have ever worked on.

Keep up the great content love to see Brothas in this space building, retrofitting, and showcasing great crafstman, carpeting, electrician, and overall building skills.
I appreciate that man I’ll keep it up!
Yess sirr🤜🏾🤛🏾💯
Great job!. The smell of cigarette smoke affects me as well. I found out that the cabin air filter which is located behind the glove box contains a lot of cigarette odor as well.
Great tip! I actually replaced that filter but I forgot to record it for the video. Should have at least mentioned it though but I forgot to do that as well 🤦🏾♂️
@@Dualex_Builds In my van ('95 Ford E150 Traveler Conversion), I don't have a glove box of any type so where would I look for the filter?
👍👍on the video!
@@justmonathefurcrew9009 Usually is on the same kinda spot, just look around under the dash!
@@kevinr4085 Thanks! I will!
Started from the bitter beginning. Lemme get my popcorn. This is going to be a good one.
Your step by step is appreciated. The amount of work and the time it takes to clean a hard used vehicle is amazing.
Pro tip from a housecleaner… get a Glas polishing towel for the windows, after you went over the window with a damp towel use the polishing towel and you‘ll have no streaks at all 😍🥰 love your content ♥️
Sheesh, that was a complete gut job. Nothing you can’t handle tho to bring this tiny gem back to life. @DuelEx can I just tell you how much I love and admire you and all the work you put in considering I don’t even know you. I can’t wait to see this build. Speaking of gutting this van what ever happened to GUTTED event? Thanks so much for sharing.
You are an excellent cinematographer. Informative and beautiful to watch.
The way I AM watching and paying attention! 😮😮👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
WoW! You’re just a jack of all trades no matter what you do it turns out amazing 🙌🏽 I don’t even own a van I just enjoy seeing the outcome of your work🙂so cool
Dude you smashed the cleaning process, looks a hell of a lot better after, loving the videos, from a fellow veteran in the UK
The 9v battery test was awesome! And the amount of rust in that van, wow!
I had to chuckle out loud when I viewed the 'Spidy' tactic ! Guess you just haven't been bitten yet! And I like the random question add-on! Great idea!
This guy is ridiculously talented
Wow, great job🙌🏽🙌🏽 The previous owner was trifling. 😅 Wonder what he was delivering? I don’t want any one delivering my goods from that filth 🤣
I really dig the voice over style of your videos.
I just wanted to congratulate your parents (or others) who helped you become a confident hard working and creative man. 👏
My family and friends are very proud. Thank you!
I think my favorite parts of your videos are the explanations and how methodical you are. This is awesome and well thought out.
Gonna use this as a sort of guide when I get my FTC! Lil dream van 🤘🏾
Just found this channel a couple days ago and I'm absolutely loving it!
I have seen a ton of van conversions, but this is the first deep-clean before the conversion starts, and the skills and knowledge for this step alone is just next level man!
Wow… simply AWESOME!😊
Thanks for showing the cleaning process more in depth.
You are amazing!
All those products are a great help but it's your elbow grease and your willingness to use it that really is key!
Pretty amazing work. Looks 100 times better. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
Nice touches to the video....its turning into art man!
Fascinating! Thanks for such clear video and explanations.
Wonderful! I use old bed sheets as custom seat covers. Folded to fit & tied up top behind the head rest once or twice
You are an awesome person. I like the way you work on your builds
you're a true inspiration!!!! thank u for the great content and for sharing your journey and knowledge with the ppl!
Ton of great information!!! Thx man! Great video!
Thanks a whole bunch brother. I’m going through the process of searching and building a van.👍🏿
Satisfying cleaning.
Wow all of your works are good quality...watching from Philippines
Thank you for sharing and looking forward to more vids.
we called that a speaker popper when I use to work @ circuit city as a installer. now you need a light to look into the speaker so you can hook up positive in negative.
You should do a skoolie. We did one and sold it. It was a 2009 dog nose 70 seater I believe. It was fun going to do another one
I Loves watching all Ur video I'm speechless UR so Brilliant!! 🤩
I'm so so so so happy that someone asked you about doing a skoolie build. I'm currently looking for a shuttle bus to build for camping and vacations. It would be AMAZING to see you do a skoolie build or any type of bus would be equally amazing. Great question. 😁
Well done!
I saw the first video when you started the clean up love the new seat covers making a lot of progress looking good 👍
Killing it!❤️
been watching your videos for awhile. i think i’m gonna attempt to set up a bed in my 94 wrangler for this camping season !
Question: What's the average cost of a conversion like what you're doing? I imagine it's different since you're doing all the labor, but I'm genuinely curious on how much it runs.
Just to help try to answer, I assume this is total cost since on a past video he has made when starting on the econoline, lets say he spent 2500 on car, and rest on build material, appliances, all that.
@@dmorrow6883 well i live in California, hype around anything allows inflation for any market cause for one from your description is easily found at 5000 with a hefty side of rust soo iunno its just how ive seen thru Craigs, ebay, offer up, unless you know where to find better deals?
@@dmorrow6883 it was 3800 if you go on his channel you can find the price
@@dmorrow6883 I just bought my 2010 Ford Transit Connect with 218K all highway mileage. It was used by a Road Survey guy, so the back end was immaculate with not even a scratch and the front seats were terrible. But the engine was really sound and it was in great shape overall. Bought it from a guy in Dunkirk(Baltimore Harbor) for only $1,800... ;) You just have to look and be very savvy about continuously watching for the great deals. Just for the record, I scanned Craigslist and other platforms for over 8 months waiting to find the right vehicle at a price I would pay... I've since put an additional 35K miles on the van and it's been working flawlessly. I also use the BlueDriver OBDII onboard device at all times to monitor my systems, and everything is great.
I watched this video because I'm thinking of getting a full sized Ford Transit, as I am a copier dealer and this little van can only haul about 3 units at a time. So the gas was great, but the ability to actually haul stuff wasn't meeting the goal. With DualEx's videos, and perhaps his drawings being free on "SketchUp", I might turn this into a fun weekend getaway vehicle. :)
God Bless you DualEx🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️💕💕🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Glad to see you Duel been missing your content but I figured you were up to something and busy that’s why hadn’t seen any post lately
Absolutely awesome 😎 you alway do incredible job on building things
Keep up the good work 🕸️ Spiderman 🕷️! Great job & great video.
Love the videos, brother!
Excellent!!
All used car dealers should clean this well. I need a new used car, but I have hyperosmia and as soon as the vehicle is opened, i want to hurl!!
OMG - you did a great job!!!
I use a paintbrush for cleaning stuff too. At work I have one for my keyboard.
Thanks it’s very informative I want to really get my van super clean for selling👍🏼
Duel I have an 18 yr old work truck snd it’s not as dirty as that van but I don’t smoke and don’t allow anyone to smoke in my vehicle and I never had but that was very gross 🤮 smoking is so nasty love the seat covers you got they look great gives the seat a totally different look 👀 it looks great
🔥🔥🔥 episode Brotha 👊🏼😎🤙🏼
Thank you for your service, Dualex. Would you work on a RV bus?
Your work is excellent 👍. I'm subbed and can't wait to see more.
the scratches in the plastic, after you clean it u can hit it lightly with a blow torch to make it not stick out or visible.. love ur work guy!
Wow great tip I haven’t thought of doing that. I’ll keep that in mind and try it in the future!
@@Dualex_Builds it also works good for The faded black trim on the outside but you have to hit it very lightly dude.. don't go all Ham on it lol
Hey I'm so excited for you on your build.. Im gonna start soon hopefully ... my full support
how do you decide what van is good? more specific the engine and mileage, do you take those things into consideration? and what should someone look for when it comes to buying a used van because i can imagine doing all that work but then the vans engine and other stuff under hood starts to act up.
Was told to check your channel out. Excellent video. Now subscribed.
You did an Amazing job cleaning up that van!!! I think I would have gave up...Lol!! My question, When are you going to finish the small trailer?
I would also love to see you do a skoolie build. I'm currently doing one, and I think its going well, but I definitely don't have the prior experience that you do. It would be fun to see someone with your experience do a skoolie.
Love the videos since jump street! Keep rolling
I love your content its so intriguing
HEYYY I LOVE YOUR WORK!!!!🙂
Great videos, King!! Do you think that you will do a build that includes making slideouts for a van?
9 volt trick was smart
Odor ban is great but buy it in the gallon bottle at home depot for 12 bucks .it also can be used in your rug cleaner and vents .we spray it in exterior vent under the windshield wipers and wait 5 minutes and run defroster
Great tip. I’m definitely going to try that next time!
would like to see a chair bed with some type of storage in it
I got mine from a guy who did road surveys, so the back was like brand new... However, the FRONT was even dirtier than yours... Thanks for posting this video. It shows that "resurrection" is actually possible.... LOL
Love anything you do. What motivates you to build things? When did you recognize your greatness in creating whatever your mind see.
Any way you could make a course or class like skill share where you put all your knowledge into teaching us how to make our own builds? With like tips and tricks and best practices?
Man this is cool
Wow! Thanks for the info, I can’t believe how filthy and deep the dirt was and I can agree with you on OdoBand because it is a great product and very cost effective that most definitely does the job every time I use it!
Question if you could would you consider putting an electrical bed lift system or a flip bed? Do you think the electrical work system will be hard to install?
Such a satisfying video to watch. Thank you! How do I look into buying one of your van conversions specifically Ford Transit Connect? I’m a retirement-age woman in the Pacific NW in the last few years of my career, but I do a lot of regional travel for a geology hobby. After watching your work, I want one of your conversions. Also, where did you learn your carpenter and cabinet making skills?
You did an amazing cleanup job I just have one question why did you not pull up the carpet on the driver side to check the metal underneath for rust?
90% of the time people forget about the head liner and wonder why the smell won't go away. Great job.
What I would Use Is in Germany we Call it „ Hochdruckreiniger“.
It’s something That shoots out Water with high Pressure
Wow! a really remarkable transformation! How did you find such a great deal on this van? With the current trend in used vehicle prices, this one is literally a goldmine:)
Just for future reference, white vinegar works wonders on cigarette odors
wow!!!
i love your videos man :)
Fast and furious, behind the scenes be like 😂
Do you do anything to mechanicals (brakes, suspension, etc) when you refurb these old vehicles?
Do you have a video converting a Nissan pathfinder into a sleeping space? 😀
Did you finish building the other trailer you were doing before this?
Is there anyway to get stains off the door arm rest and that area? Thanks great video
i couldnt even eat while i watched this lol
I absolutely LOVE your channel! Were u in the military??? Also how do u know how to do all the incredible builds u do?
Have you ever done a Tailgate trailer?
you can heat them scratch up with a heat gun on that dash board. don't put it to close.
When I first saw that bracket, my guess was maybe a cigarette holder?
DualEx I also wanted to ask another question..... I saw those seat covers you put on in the last video. MAN, I'd love to know the info on those! And, is there any way to install these properly without actually removing the seats? If you have those on your Amazon store, I'd love to order some.
I have a random question: Would plarn Ever be useful at all in building a mini home van/car/bus? Silly question, I know. I just love making plarn, it’s always on my mind.
What kind of masks do you wear during the vac & chemical processes?
Awesome !!!!!!!!!
My question is would you buy one of these new RV'S that's ridiculously expensive or do you rather build your own like you're doing now. Reason is my wife and I are both retired and we want to travel the 48 states but we don't have deep pockets. But we have skills, my wife is a seamstress and home designer and I am a descent mechanic both in military and civilian life. Aloha from Kansas
A little detailer hack just use magic eraser on plastics
If you haven't already you might want to think about changing out the cabin air filter, as soon as you go to turn the ac or heat on you'll get hit in the fact with cigarette smell.
I'm interested in buying it when it's finished serious inquiry
👏👏👏
I'm cleaning up an old Ford Ranger which looks like will be my "truck life" for a bit. A previous owner had a ratty old carpet dash piece that had to be thrown away. They used stick'em velcro pieces to hold it in place. I removed the block pieces, but it left behind a sticky residue that I am having a heck of time getting removed. Do you have a product suggestion I can use? I tried Dawn dish soap (with elbow grease,) simple green, and even WD-40... I learned to never use this last one on a dash as it will soften it and cause it to split the first time the sun bakes on it! Any suggestions... anyone?
