***** It's Windows 8. Unfortunately, they have taken out the basic 'classic' theme that came default with Windows 7. Is there a way you can get it back via downloadable programs?
AntoniYOwned they should make a version with more RAM, 4GB should be enough for windows but even with 2 I would consider it even if it would be a higher price that way.
Can't you just hook up a bluetooth keyboard to the Stream and play games that way? Now I'm sure the tablet would melt when doing anything intense like that but its a thought...

Austin Evans I have got to say that you just made me buy 2 asus memo pads with this video. Was wondering what to give to my 2 children for christmas and since they both like minecraft and similar android games, Also this video was damn near perfect, managed to catch everything that i would like to know about the tablets in a "short" timespan + i also bought a hp stream 7 for myself, just because of the office 365 :)
Austin Evans totally agree, look at those lumia phones. the 530 is only £20 in the UK, got it in bright green as a replacement phone and I kinda like the 530 more than my s5!
Austin Evans agree, bought a €50 smartphone. it holds up incredibly well, playing games like deadtrigger and temple run 2 aswel as handling extremely image heavy sites without stutter or slowsdowns. (altho this might be partly due to it running (near) stock android 4.4.2)
Picked up the Asus MeMO for my mother a month ago and she's loving it. Thanks for the recommendation Austin! Without this video, I would've never known the MeMO existed.
I I've had the Stream 7 for a few months and it serves me well - I paired it with the 7' Zagg AutoFit Keyboard and it fits like a charm. The AutoFit basically turnes the tablet into a super mini laptop and it fits my needs perfectly, as I am a commuting college student. For my productivity needs, the HP is a solid choice. Before the Stream I had a 2012 Nexus 7 that never quite did what I needed. Just thought I'd share.
+Vince O I had the AutoFit with the Nexus 7 before the Stream, so I stuck with the 7in size for portability, but I knew I needed Windows. Just my preference. 😊
That Stream seems well worth the anticipation, they really do seem quite nice. What's really leaving me hesitant is (as you mentioned) the ram amount which definitely isn't enough for me and my tons and tons of chrome tabs and just generally for me and a windows 8 machine, as well as lack of a USB port. 2.0/3.0 doesn't matter, I do feel HP could have squeezed it in considering how thick it already looks.
But hey, that's just me, I mean the only tablets I see worth it at this point in time are one of the iPad series or a surface, but what I'm saying is I would be willing to pay extra for a higher end model with those features.
***** Really? So the 1 GB suffices for you? Ah interesting, but I guess that's still variant on how you use it. (Side note) Btw on your Linx 7 how are boot times?
the pricing on tech is real important for me. I bought my Kindle fire HD for about 79? and I'm real happy with it. It's not as fast as the flagship tablets out there, but it does it for me. The only thing bothering me is the Amazon Appstore! there aren't many Apps to choose from.
Austin has some of the best videos of the bunch. They are extremely high quality and well made.I remember he talked about this some time ago, I think when he was talking with MKBHD. I wish they were made more often but I understand why such nice videos take a while to make.
I see your points about the Stream 7's shortcomings, but I wonder what adding a good keyboard case does for it's overall usability...a fake-it-til-ya-make-it Surface or Yoga?
Hey, Austin. Thanks for posting this video as I recently got $100 to blow on something. I finally decided to get the HP Stream 7. This'll be a huge help for me since I'm 16 and STILL sharing a computer with my parents and its driving me nuts. That's what made me push towards the Stream 7 since I would essentially have a full Windows computer that I can put in the pocket of my jeans where I can work on essays for school and homework where ever I am.
I have the memo pad. watching it a second time right now on my memo pad. I've had it for about a year and its still quick and everything is still working great.
I think if HP stepped up the specs even slightly and raised the price slightly as well, a budget, full windows tablet could have been spectacular. For example, maybe 3 gigs of RAM and raise the price to 200.
I have a 7" 2012 Kindle Fire HD running CyanogenMod, and it works about as well as I'd expect these two to run from your review. I'd say that it makes sense that a 2 year old $200 tablet would probably be equivalent to a $100 new one. Even though it makes sense, it is incredible how technology continues to get progressively cheaper.
Yep. Definitely the Memo Pad would be the way to go for me. Especially since it's more likely to run companion apps and standard mobile apps. Also good because it's different from the PC I already have.
PotatoBeanZ Just wasn't feeling posting those types of videos on my channel. Kicked around making a second channel for that kind of stuff but just haven't had the time lately...
Austin Evans Sooo many questions though. Like are you from Southwest Missouri, because I swear I've seen things in your videos that look exactly like Southwest Missouri....
Check out the WinBook TW801. It has the same specs as the Stream 7 except with double the memory (and a slightly larger display), plus you avoid the horrible HP build quality. The extra $40 is definitely worth it.
As a person on a budget looking for a tablet, this helped me out a lot. Thank you Austin. I really appreciate your unbiased and informative reviews :) Keep them coming and have a merry christmas ;)
I definitely would! I just can't decide which one as I want to use it as a viewfinder for my Nikon D5100. I fell like windows is a better option but I'm not sure.
Sometimes we take weird photos, wouldn't want them displayed on that lol. I'm not always taking photos of sunshine and oceans. Sometimes I take photos of my finger nails lol
I have an Asus Fonepad 7... it would be a much nicer tablet if the storage was more than just 8 GB... only 4 GB are available to the user... so I barely can install any apps on it... that sucks... besides that the Asus tablet is very slow at times... only 1 GB of RAM is not enough for a fluid experience on Android 5.0.
I think the Stream comes out as the underdog that we want to love. The HP Stream may not have flagship specs in hardware, but it does have what we wanted in the days of PDAs, a travel size functional device made for communications (like email, Skype, chat, and basic browsing) and light productivity (aka Office 365) in a Microsoft ecosystem for $99. Overall the HP Stream's pros make up for it's cons. It's no flagship, but it's still good. Great videos Austin, keep up the good work.
my HP Stream 7 is a rlly good tablet.. i love it.. but its only down sides r battery and the plastic scratches rlly easily. but its a rlly good tablet overall audio is rlly good with headphones.. which i care of
I've had the Memo Pad 7 for about 4 months now, and absolutely love it! IF just reading news A single charge will last you a couple days, and while gaming (Asphalt 7) I can still easily get 8 hours out of a single charge. Since I've had it, Asus has updated the firmware 3 times now. I haven't heard if Lollipop (Android 5.0) is coming, but I would suspect it would be. For a budget Tablet its the best you can get atm.
I would just go with the more expensive memopad at 200$. This years model has 1920x1200 display at 7 inches and 1.8 quad core. In finland its just 225€ witch is quite cheat considering the flagship specs.
It's honestly a really amazing tablet, it has a tegra 4 chip. The only downside is the somewhat cheap screen, but thats really fine with a cover and a case
I had for the past year and an half an asus memopad (the old version). It's still a awsome product and this new one is even better. I would recomend it to anyone. It runs praticlly every app with no lag and it is root compatible. :D
The HP Stream 7 is a snazzy little thing, especially when you pair it up with a Bluetooth keyboard though it would be nice if it had more than just 1GB RAM. The whole "full version of Windows on a cheap tablet" could do well with those on a budget those a USB To Go lead included in the box would also be nice.
But then again they do have some really good research that helps against students and back issues. Which is a huge issue with a high school student like me. But those tablets if they were a little bigger I would like them. But again tablets aren't really for me
DarkMatterDoesMinecraft My smartphone is the best cheating device ever! Once the Italian teacher asked me about some verb and than turned around to answer a question. Meantime, I quickly searched it on Google Translate and I've got an A! You can't do that with a tablet...
Yes, I definitely would pick up a $100 tablet. I would just do it for that very low price combined with the decent hardware. Definitely not a bad buy for casual users.
I don't mean to sound rude or mean and I hope you don't take offense to this but, when your apartment burned it had a drive with your stuff backed up and it was lost in the fire and in another ad you had it was talking about a cloud storage that was good because it wouldn't be affected if your house burned down. But now you are advertising a drive that backs it up but keeps it in your house. What's up with that?

The MeMo Pad looks really awesome and once I get some money, I'll have to look into it. It's amazing how cheap such good tech is nowadays! You definitely couldn't expect this level of performance a year ago with only a hundred dollars!
I'm interested in a tablet that runs full W8.1 cause it would be really cool to just run some basic Windows programs without too much trouble. But this one probably won't be it cause yeah 1GB ram is too little for windows. Do any of you maybe have some other (not too expensive) options?
maclovio hudson Actually it does support touch screens very well, people have put Ubuntu on a surface 3 and it worked and ran a lot better than it would with Windows.
maclovio hudson hmm that sucks well I've seen many videos of people enjoying the better experience on the surface pro with Ubuntu than with winshit on it, I'd love to try to myself if I had one
I'm very happy with my stream 7, even with the 1 gig of ram, runs windows 10 very smooth and with a case, it's very well protected. While a fingerprint magnet, my only complaint is its battery life. But otherwise for less then the assus, you get a full OS experience with office 365 one year sub. But where this thing really blows everything out of its way is when you pair it with the Plugable Pro8!! Trust me, it becomes beast mode.. Yeah, no kitkat comes near it then..
I still have my Asus Memopad 7HD (also known as 2.Gen memopad) and I still enjoy the tablet and it offers even more than some flagship devices. (e.g. asus splendid - you can calibrate your screen... why doesn't every smartphone/tablet have this feature) and since it was so cheap, I don't really care about the planned obsolescence (i.e. built-in battery which will die eventually and you can't change it) It's also quite sturdy, I don't really take care of it nowadays and it still looks like new. It doesn't have gorilla glass but some glass/plastic mix which is just as durable if not more since I had gorilla glass3 devices which got micro-scratches after some time even though I was very careful.
I bought a Memo (Mehmo) Pad like 6 or 8 months ago. As a reasonably tech savvy person, I love this tablet. If you have a full charge than the bettery will be at 30% by the end of the day. It can do everything I need it to do as far as a tablet is concerned. I loved it so much that within 3 days two of my other immediate family members bought them as well. flawless.
i have me176cx 16gb... i paid 129€ for it, but even with this price its awesome purchase. only downside is that many android apps dont work on x86 or are unstable at this point. Also the tablet i feel would really benefit from being updated to android 5, being 64 bit unit and all.had this unit to replace nexus 7 2012 i had that had its usb port busted and im happy with it, as i loved my N7 and this is far more powerful, but also, externally very similar.
I think the Stream offers great value for money. Quite pleased with mine so far. I thought windows 8.1 and and Office 365 for a year was what sold me the product more than anything. I haven't had too many problems with the ram, but i can definitely see why someone would. I would recommend it tbh if you purchase a USB hub and keyboard and mouse. For word processing on a budget, on the go i cant see why its not worth considering.
Great comparison! I'm hoping that now with Windows 10 you get full touch experience for tablets and phones, instead of the mixed up desktop-touch version in every Windows device.
For people in the UK have a look at Linx 8, it can be gotten for around £80 if you look hard, it is a really good little machine for such a cheap price.
man i remember my dad's old memo pad 7, I used t play clash of clans everyday until he made me delete it since it affected my 3rd grade studies but man oh man did i have a good time with that tablet... oh man nostalgia
If the Windows tablet had a bit more ram it would definitely be better than the Memo pad, for me at least. and maybe better speakers would be nice but just the fact it's running windows 8 on a small tablet, it's basically a mini computer rather than a big smartphone.
I would totally buy one of these if I was looking for a cheap tablet! Thank you Austin for giving some attetion to these kinds of products because you are like the one and only tech channel that does these kinds of videos to my knowlegde.
Hey Austin - A great Video as always! I was considering buying an $100 tablet until I came across an article just before this video that stated there were some security vulnerabilities with some cheap tablets. However, I don't think this applies to these tablets - as they are well known manufacturers. Also, may I ask what the music is in the background?
Baz B you should look at the asus t100ta its a bit more expensive but sports 10.1 inch screen 32 gb hard drive with 500 gb hdd in the keyboard handles about everything
I would purchase a $100 tablet if you recommended it! And I am so glad that you are back on your feet and well on your way to recovery from that stupid fire a couple of weeks back. Nice to know that your friends have your back.
I did pick up a 139 dollar tablet running windows 8.1 with 2gb of ram. It was replacing my rooted original kindle fire which was way to slow for even the basic tasks anymore. I really love the windows 8.1 tablet, it is a little bit funky on the desktop side, and having the buttons a bit small but I have gotten used to metro internet explorer which made it easier to browse the web
Damn, Austin your videos have been on another level lately, really been enjoying them.

Austin Evans Yeah for real. Mind blowing. Unfortunate ram though, but it still seems cheap enough to enjoy if you get a real decent SD card.

What's up with that?
ok here the pc im building for just playing small games just tell me if it will work but im sure it will

The MeMo Pad looks really awesome and once I get some money, I'll have to look into it. It's amazing how cheap such good tech is nowadays! You definitely couldn't expect this level of performance a year ago with only a hundred dollars!
I had a Windows tablet before and I think that Windows should stay on PC.
I have a Windows tablet and I think it's good on tablet because. I have 6gbs of ram
fair 'nuff
It's find on something like the Surface tablet, but not on something like the tablet is n the video.
I'm interested in a tablet that runs full W8.1 cause it would be really cool to just run some basic Windows programs without too much trouble. But this one probably won't be it cause yeah 1GB ram is too little for windows.
Do any of you maybe have some other (not too expensive) options?
meemo pad 7???😂😂
What's the song that starts at 0:34?
Now if those tablets were running Linux instead of Windows you would notice a huge difference and than it would be worth the money and run nicely.
but Linux didn't support the touch interface nicely, that's the problem, (very buggy).
maclovio hudson Actually it does support touch screens very well, people have put Ubuntu on a surface 3 and it worked and ran a lot better than it would with Windows.
corey drew bruce in my personal experience, Linux didn't work very well with the touch, but maybe others have discovered the secret.
maclovio hudson hmm that sucks well I've seen many videos of people enjoying the better experience on the surface pro with Ubuntu than with winshit on it, I'd love to try to myself if I had one
Hey don't you call Windows Winshit you eggtard.
Your videos have been really awesome recently!
can you Netflix and chill on it?
Yes
Heяø GaMeR then it's worth the price
Vibudh Sharma i can do that with. A crappy 50$ amazon tablet
I would choose the HP Stream 7. A very compact tablet with full Windows 8.1. Just what I need!
Literally 99% won’t see this but, god bless you and stay safe and have a wonderful day read my name plz 😃
Wow Austin, those benchmark for both tablets were stronger than last year nexus 7? Dang. Thats impressive!
Awesome Austin. Got anything cool planned for Christmas. A robot computer powered Santa Claus?
Haha have a good Christmas.
The good old days of tech.

I still have my Asus Memopad 7HD (also known as 2.Gen memopad) and I still enjoy the tablet and it offers even more than some flagship devices. (e.g. asus splendid - you can calibrate your screen... why doesn't every smartphone/tablet have this feature)
and since it was so cheap, I don't really care about the planned obsolescence (i.e. built-in battery which will die eventually and you can't change it)
It's also quite sturdy, I don't really take care of it nowadays and it still looks like new.
I loved it so much that within 3 days two of my other immediate family members bought them as well. flawless.
**buys 7 inch tablet for $40 on black Friday** this is my asus memo pad
i have me176cx 16gb... i paid 129€ for it, but even with this price its awesome purchase. only downside is that many android apps dont work on x86 or are unstable at this point. Also the tablet i feel would really benefit from being updated to android 5, being 64 bit unit and all.had this unit to replace nexus 7 2012 i had that had its usb port busted and im happy with it, as i loved my N7 and this is far more powerful, but also, externally very similar.
I am watching this on a Winbook TW802. I had this since last April, and I have not yet encountered any crashes.
It depends if you need a portable version of your computer with same compatibilities write a paper, transfer it keep writing on the go.
Dude your getting pretty good at edit I must say Austin Evans Your Videos are looking sharper and sharper.
Love your topic choices!
Short and to the point, keep it up!
Austin man your quality Is top notch but seem to only get better :P keep it up man
Love the background music. And everything else. Good job
Great comparison! I'm hoping that now with Windows 10 you get full touch experience for tablets and phones, instead of the mixed up desktop-touch version in every Windows device.
For people in the UK have a look at Linx 8, it can be gotten for around £80 if you look hard, it is a really good little machine for such a cheap price.
austin wow your videos have REALLY improved buddy
man i remember my dad's old memo pad 7, I used t play clash of clans everyday until he made me delete it since it affected my 3rd grade studies but man oh man did i have a good time with that tablet... oh man nostalgia
If the Windows tablet had a bit more ram it would definitely be better than the Memo pad, for me at least. and maybe better speakers would be nice but just the fact it's running windows 8 on a small tablet, it's basically a mini computer rather than a big smartphone.
Austin Evans Monstercat music isn't for me.. But I really like that one in Lyve commercial at the beginning.
Can I get it's name ?
I would totally buy one of these if I was looking for a cheap tablet! Thank you Austin for giving some attetion to these kinds of products because you are like the one and only tech channel that does these kinds of videos to my knowlegde.
Hey Austin - A great Video as always! I was considering buying an $100 tablet until I came across an article just before this video that stated there were some security vulnerabilities with some cheap tablets. However, I don't think this applies to these tablets - as they are well known manufacturers. Also, may I ask what the music is in the background?
Baz B You got it, I'd have zero problems trusting either of these tablets.
Austin Evans
Thanks for the confirmation. I'm gonna look in to the stream 7 as it seems like a fairly good deal.
Baz B you should look at the asus t100ta its a bit more expensive but sports 10.1 inch screen 32 gb hard drive with 500 gb hdd in the keyboard handles about everything
The idea of a full windows on a small tablet is nice but I thin one or perhaps tow gigs more ram would be a price up worth.
2GB of RAM and I'm in, these tablets are awesome!
I would purchase a $100 tablet if you recommended it! And I am so glad that you are back on your feet and well on your way to recovery from that stupid fire a couple of weeks back. Nice to know that your friends have your back.
wtf is a Asus memo pad??? i only heard about the Asus Meme pad
The only tech youtuber that make videos that make sense. Instead of making videos just for the money
Crazy that the prices for devices like this have gone even further down. Amazon's Fire 7 is similar to this, and it costs less than $50.
Do either of these have the Google play store on them
