You had the arm over the fire with the hook for the cast iron kettle. A wee box in the wall with a metal door as your oven or for warming food. You had your three legged bastible with seperate lid to either sit on the fire as it burned down or on the hook as it had a swivel handle too to put on to be over the fire but not on it. There was a cast iron dish skinny like with a handle to do the same. I wasn't born til 1959 but saw that in the sixties and the drum of gas and four ring and oven and drawer for storage started to show up. Lots had the range though and it was a giant hot plate, oven and kept the heat so you could dry clothes over it, keep a kettle on the boil, keep food warm, heat the house. Marvel of engineering.
There's actually camping gas cookers with an oven that go on top of the hobs to be able to bake stuff. The oven is an accessory you'll never see in store usually, but can be ordered in.
In my area of Australia the power come about 1955. But it only goes up certain roads STILL in this area and MANY are off grid. Myself included as the power company is gearing up to build infrastructure in the corner of my farm and is paying me a fair $ for a 60 year lease on that tiny patch.
My husband’s family farmed in Saskatchewan Canada and they did not get electricity until 1958. They never did have an indoor bathroom. They moved to Edmonton Alberta in 1963.
This is a priceless and precious thing you’re doing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart
I love the chatter between these two ladies - sounds like music 🎶 😍
