- Gabriele Susanne Kerner (born 24 March 1960), better known as Nena, is a German singer-songwriter, actress, and comedian who rose to international fame in 1983 as the eponymous lead vocalist of the band Nena with the Neue Deutsche Welle song "99 Luftballons". In the same year the band re-recorded this song in English as "99 Red Balloons". Nena's re-recording of some of the band's old hit songs as a solo artist, produced by the co-composer of most of them, her former Nena band colleague and keyboard player Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, rekindled her solo career in 2002. Combined with the success of the Nena band years, she has sold over 25 million records, making her one of Germany's most successful music artists.
This Toppop recording of 'Fragezeichen' (German for 'question mark') was first broadcast on January 5, 1984. The single reached #12 in the Dutch Top 40 in January 1984.

What a talent Nena was back in the day-if she had done English versions of her songs besides “99 Luft(Red) Balloons” she could have been Europe’s answer to Pat Benatar here in America! Both women had similar dark-haired looks and classic stylin’in-the-80’s thread sense! They were beautiful-and talented!!
She's still an amazing talent, and still churning out great music. Her 2009 album Made In Germany is f**king AWESOME!!!

I'm quite certain she recorded some other songs in English, and ? was one of them. I had this and a couple other songs on a cassette back in the day. Like half the songs on the cassette were the original German and half were in English.

I love Nena. Too bad Poland was behind the iron curtain at the time, they had a group similar to Nena called Maanam. They would have made it big in the West had it not been for the iron curtain, they recorded in English and Polish and were excellent.
