Yes you can export your particle illusion project into the particle illusion plugin which is a paid version though. But that will allow you to work with 3d particles in ae. Otherwise just render out and import in ae ;)

Thanks for the fun tutorial. Just to clarify, at 4:25 Forces, fields and fluid dynamics can all be added in 2D mode as well as 3D mode.
