    One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned growing up is having to watch your parents get older and struggle more and it’s so important to be there for them when they need your support. ❤

      Yes, it's heartbreaking and the hardest part for me was stepping into the role reversal. It devastated me when I had to be the "parent." It was terribly sad. I'm not complaining, it was a low blow seeing them decline and lose their independence.

      My mom just turned 94 and my sister has to take care of her. Her mind has slipped away and I can’t help her. I’m in a wheelchair and can’t be there. It’s hard on me and I’m worried about her not remembering me! So far that hasn’t happened. My sister is struggling with her! 😢mom wants to die in her home and will not even go outside anymore.

    Five things that stood out:
    1)Carlos’ goodness
    2)Nickies patience with negative comments
    3)the dumb kitchen idea in that other room
    (which probably came from someone that hardly uses a kitchen)
    4)the judgmental comment about your cat (ignore it, people are mean jerks)
    5)the amazing food market which puts anything in the states to shame
    I wish I could meet you both one day….just lovely, down to earth people
    Thank you.

    • @AncoraImparo12387
      @AncoraImparo12387 4 месяца назад +1

      That is because Nursing or (Nursing) care is not standard. If your family does not do it you must pay, as Carlo said. This is the case in most non-English speaking countries in the world. Nordic countries are different. Yes I have lived/worked in Italy and many non-speaking English countries so I speak with experience. Many Americans moving to Europe etc don't seem to know this but should.

    • @sharongates4699
      @sharongates4699 4 месяца назад +5

      As I mentioned in a previous comment, this is one of the things I love about Italy, the love and care Italians give to family and neighbors. Although nursing care is standard here in the US, it is still a good idea for family members (or close friends) to be available and/or spend as much time as possible with the patient, something my family and past generations always did. If you’ve ever been in a hospital you will know that nurses cannot always come to your aid right away when called and it is not unheard of to sometimes receive the wrong meds or to see to it that the patient takes the meds. A family member present is always a good idea when at all possible and when allowed.

      Hmmm. I live in the US:- Western NC mountains to be exact, and I must say your comment about the US surprised me. The people that live near me are wonderful. They are like family and are always helping each other out. Even though most of my family , which is huge, lives on the coast , we are in constant contact and are very devoted to each other. I've lived in many parts of the US over the course of my life, and this has always been the case. I have found that community starts with you. It takes effort, but is worth it and it is so enriching!

    Dear Nikki and Carlo, I have followed your Chanel for ages. You are living the dream! Tuscany and Positano are so beautiful. I am an Australian woman married to an Italian man for over 35 years. My husband’s dad migrated here to Melbourne in the 50’s and married his wonderful and resilient wife by proxy. They had 5 children. The family connection with Italian families is incredibly strong. My mother in law died about 10 years ago but my father in law is 96, still lives independently and does the garden and cooks pasta for the family every week! All the children (now in their 50’s and 60’s) visit their father regularly. It is such an important aspect of the Italian culture. There are now many grandchildren and great grandchildren who love and respect their nonno. Best wishes to Carlo’s parents, I hope his dad recovers soon. Best wishes, Rhonda from Melbourne, Australia

    Supporting your dad and mom through your dad’s recent hospitalization is so good.❤ My mom is 96 and I can relate to the challenges with stairs and mobility. I am so grateful she lives with me. Although it can be challenging to work full time and looking after my mom, I would not change this. My mom has been my only parent, had me later in life and she helped look after my children when they were young and it seems fitting that we all do the same. It’s not that common in North America. I think it’s so great that Nicki’s dad at 90 is so mobile and well. It must give her a lot of peace of mind.

He drove them everywhere they needed to go. Then he lived and took care of Mom until she passed two years ago at 96. He was there for them when the rest of us raised our families and were able to make our careers work. Now he has terminal cancer and on SSI. I have been helping him out with money the last two years even though I am only on social security. I appreciate all he did for them. We lost two siblings in the last ten years.

      @@clairedesrosiers7398 The basics of English grammar and vocabulary are relatively simple to learn, namely for people who are native speakers of Germanic languages (like German, Dutch, any of the Scandinavian languages) or Latin-based languages (like French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian). But actual fluency in English is really, really difficult for non-native speakers because there are so many conflicting rules about grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, etc. English has such a mash-up of influences, it's not at all easy to master and takes a lot of practice, willingness to make mistakes, etc. Germanic language speakers often have an edge because English is at its root a Germanic language, and the underlying grammatical rules and pronunciation can be more similar. The Latin influences (specifically from Norman rule of England for a couple hundred years, and French being the official language of England for about three centuries) bridges some gaps with Latinate languages, but there are more significant differences. (Apologies for the lengthy sidebar about this, I just love nerding out about language 😆 )

    What a great “catch up” video!!! So happy your papa is feeling better. The reversal of roles - taking care of aging parents is truly a blessing, and it isn’t until they are gone that you realize that. God bless you all and looking forward to “seeing” you next Sunday.

    Loved the video this week, I'm also Italian with a big family we also took shifts with our parents when they were ill. My mom, Sophia Julia passed away in May of 2000 and my father James Bernardo, in Feb. '94. I still miss them everyday. I'm glad that Carlo shared his feelings about Positiano and his love of the sea. I don't understand people's questions about the things you felt the need to answer! I think you and Carlo are too nice! I wouldn't worry about what other people think so much, I really thought that was crazy that someone would assume you abandoned your cat! WTH!? I like the new 4 wheeler! Sweet! You're going to fall in love with that new ride! Have a great week and I hope and pray that Carlo's Father gets well soon. 🙏 Ciao

I love getting one on one time with you talking to us on camera... it's like talking to a dear Italian friend. I have to say that watching Carlo and his family take care of each other make me so proud to be Italian. There's something special about being a part of a culture where family and community is so important. Even after all these years of watching you guys I am always taking away such a great feeling of comfort after watching. I absolutely adore you all as strange as that may sound. I think you guys know how much you mean to so many of us who watch, but I just like to say thank you again for sharing your lives with us.

    This is such a warm and fuzzy video. I love the overhead shots of the surf coming onto the beach in Positano, your travels around the market and places in Livorno with your friends, the beach with it's special stones and gorgeous driftwood, hearing Carlo talk about his dad and watching him shave his dad in the hospital, Carlo speaking to us in English (his English is very good!) about Positano and doing his chories, feeding Itty Bitty, and dunking his bread and jam into his capuccino (I LOVE dunking my bread and jam into hot chocolate!) hearing you answer some questions, the new vehicle, the house, etc. Just everyday life and family. And how special that is.
