- Join me on another internet adventure! Where we discuss the most recent design crime done by yet another TikToker. This time we are talking about a stunning spiral staircase being replaced, whether people should be allowed to alter potentially historical buildings, and how that staircase could have looked gorgeous ( even with a modern farmhouse facelift)

I don’t live in Florida but i have noticed in Tennessee ppl update older homes and remove all the character.its so sad especially for some of us that want to purchase a home . They all end up looking the same .
I know, it's happening in Australia as well 🥲
yeah I have a house but still go on zillow just to see what the market is doing....you can tell a flipper- gray walls, white cabinets, LVL flooring. HD or Lowes lighting.
@@SamBaker-z9h unfortunately they're not too creative 😅
The pool kills me. It's Florida. You'd rather have the pool.
That's what I was thinking!
@Kimberly_Sparkles they said in the video that it was cheaper to concrete over it. I think it would have been cheaper and easier to put some pebbles in there and leveling sand or something.
Then if I, a gardener, want to continue using it as a garden, I can
@dismurrart6648 I agree and it allows for you to do what you like with it. Could have been an amazing greenhouse! 🌱
The florida flipsters are my mortal enemies and they kept coming up in my recommendation
I feel so so sorry for you 🤣😭
@tashsikkes btw, I saw someone do fake beams by taking 2x4s, mitering edges with a table saw and putting braces inside for structural stability. Even easier, I've seen people just line the 2x4s up and put in braces.
Those foam beams are as expensive as real beams and that option would look more realistic for a fifth the cost so the foam neam almost made me angrier than the fireplace.
@dismurrart6648 great point! I think I've seen something similar as well. It really would have been cheaper that way, I have no idea what they were thinking 🫠
Covering a pool that way could cause a sink hole down the road. Very dangerous.
😬 when I thought it couldn't get any worse 🥲
I love your updates to it - the lighter beam with black wall is nice. I would have taken the wood further and clad the entire ceiling 😅
Ooooh that would have been nice too! Definitely would warm it up a lot and be even more mid century than what I suggested, great idea!
In my town in Minnesota USA every renovation has to be inspected by the city. I appreciate this - my contractor had to redo his electrical update four times to pass inspection! I can’t imagine what would have happened without inspection. Unapproved renovations have to be torn out before a house sells. Inspection rules vary by area - some areas, especially in the southern USA seem to have few rules. Scary.
Yea I'm not opposed to people DIYing renovations but it has to be up to standard and safe. Inspections by the city or some official body minimises the possibility for harm and quality tends to be higher as well. I'm not well versed in my USA states but I had heard that Florida is pretty lax, didn't think it'd be to this extent though 😬
Ignorance and arrogance = disaster! All too common combination these days- particularly in western countries.
Unfortunately so. Hopefully that changes though before something truly disastrous occurs
@@tashsikkessome only learn the hard way… but I don’t want innocent to pay. It is buyer beware. I investigated into horse floats a few years ago and was shocked that new ones imported from, yes, China, have massive issues. Mixing electricity and water is a hazard for instance! All legal no checks required…
@allegrosotto2126 woah! That's crazy but unfortunately unsurprising. It seems to have seeped into every industry, there's no care put into anything anymore. It's so worrying 😟
@@tashsikkes always ask questions, never assume.
When people who are raised by sad beige moms become flippers. = /
Here in America, if you go through a realtor, or an independent contractor, you can hire a home inspector to go into a house before you buy to look at wiring, plumbing, structural stability, ect. So they can look at crap stains on the ceiling like that one and go, uh... no. So DIY is fine, but if it's not up to code, or just seems like not a good purchase, the inspector can give a head's up to possible future problems before you buy so you don't end up sinking a lot of money into future repairs, (like that pool will one day be.)
That's good to hear. At least there is some level of protection for the buyer 🤞
Would the foam beam harden and flake in time? Will it emmit gasses especially if the fireplace it touches is used?
I suppose it would depend on the type of foam. I'd be very curious about that as well 🤔
I already watched other videos about it but you bring new informations and ideas that's really nice!
Happy to hear that! I hadnt really heard anyone talk about what could be done instead so Im glad you appreciated it! :)
@@tashsikkes I really loved that you showed alternatives👍
The all out white/beige asthetic needs to honestly die out please where is the creativity of colour. Some of these house flippers think that adding wall colour of any kind is gonna send them to an early morgue like it doesnt bite. A little bit of white here and there is harmless but everything being white is just too much.
And like you said the only thing mid century left in the place is the funiture, not the walls, not the floors and defiently not the ultra modern looking kitchen. and the absolutely ruined that fireplace.
Are all modern house flippers such cheap skates that lack any sort of creativity who just want profit and don't care about the final product.
I think the biggest issue is that most don't come from design or construction backgrounds so they go with what seems to work in modern homes not realising they are ruining valuable selling pieces in the process. There are some good ones out there but they are certainly rare. My wish is that they would consult a designer who knew how to work with existing styles, that in itself would work out some of the biggest issues 😕
@@tashsikkes 100% if a designer had any sort of help and input with this then it would not have turned out soo bad.
I remember in the 2000's an accent wall was a good thing!
@t.y.5565 it was! It was a great way to add colour or drama into the space. However it ended up looking disjointed because most people would paint the wall and call it a day instead of trying to tie it into the space. In this example I think they did an alright job because they carried it in and were brave enough to do a few of them instead of leaving it as a white box 🤔
Is that concrete gonna cave in eventually? Cuz they don’t know what they are doing
Not sure, I think they got contractors to do it so it might actually be quality work 🤔
They didn't even need a solid wood beam. I had a condo that had wood beams made of 3 boards! Literally take the boards and attach them lengthwise into a "U" shape, stain the wood to your liking...and mount it to the ceiling to the wood rafters. Super easy and probably the same price or cheaper than the foam they used AND it could have been installed by two people on ladders with no issue. Also if a stupid flipper paints the wood board "beam" you can always disassemble and re-do the finish! That is what we did as our entire condo was flipped terribly and I will add NEVER paint rough sawn cedar. Taking a dental pick to a PAINTED WHITE rough sawn cedar fireplace surround for YEARS to get every speck of paint out of the grain is something I will never forget. I hate flippers. When we bought a house we intentionally looked for a place that was NOT flipped.
Great point! Honestly when I get a home I genuinely do not even want to look at a flipped house. They're almost always terrible quality 🫠
Can you fix the fireplace after what they did to it? I mean remove whatever the hell they put on it? Is it possible??
If it is, it will require a lot of man-hours to fix. But due to the stones being pores, I have a feeling it may not be 😢
That’s what I was afraid of, it’s so sad
I don't think it is
isn't it horrid? grinding that stuff away will take a really long time and as porous as the stones are, i think they have just ruined this :(
@@sherilynl4038:( 😢
The exaust fan might be a draw down system at the back of the stove.
Great point 🤔
If they didn't want to go with a solid wood beam, they could have made it out of plywood. If they doubled it up and put a wood vinyl, it could be stained to match the timber flooring. And if the beam was too heavy, cut it so you could place it easier. I doubt that foam beam is flame retardant or heat resistant. What if it starts melting? That's a huge risk for the new owners. It could fall on someone. What if it falls on a small child? I don't think these "flippers" care about the safety of other people if they are cutting corners like this. They shouldn't be in that field of work if they don't care about the safety of others.
Couldn't agree more! 💯
In America, you should have trade inspections, insulation, framing, etc.
That's what I would expect. I'm surprised it passed tbh 😅
Flipsters are kind of playing the sims, but in real life
Omg that is so accurate 🤣
To be fair, the stove probably has a built-in downdraft exhaust fan.
Oooh good point! Didn't think about that 🤔🤞
It is better to clean the pool area up as best as you can and have the option for the buyers to renovate it. Then to distroy all the options or end up getting them more costs. Very bad..
So disappointing 😞
I think that range has a fan that pops up, more like a recirculating fan though. see that thick bump of a strip on the back of the range? I think thats what that is... but then again, they cheated out on everything so not sure.
That's a great point, I missed that. They're pretty rare in Australia so I didn't even think of it!
These people are a plague on society. I call flip homes "Home Depot" houses. Everything inside looks like it was on clearance at Home Depot. If you don't have the budget to flip a home properly then you shouldn't be flipping homes. You should not be able to look at a home and tell that it's a flip house.
Agreed! 100% 🫠
Now I want Cookies and Cream 😆
🤣🤣🤣
I may not like it…. But its their house and i dont feel like im the main character in their life 😅 doesnt mean im going to change my opinion, but im self aware enough to not make other people doing shit with their own home my problem…..
That's fair but they were flipping the house for a quick sale not because they intended to keep it. If they were doing it for themselves I would be less harsh on them for doing what they like but this was going against the initial design of the home and they did want to keep it more mid century. Appreciate you adding your opinion to the mix 😊
Although in general I agree with the video, I really dislike what you say at 7:25 "it's the cheapest you can get which means the quality is low down". That is just not true.
Thats fair enough. I've seen a very similar product in action and it just didn't last, which I don't like when you're renovating a home. You can do cheap but quality I just don't think that's so in this example. Thanks for watching and hearing my thoughts 😊
New owners' gonna get an unpleasant surprise if they try to hang anything (plant hooks, etc.) from that Styrofoam beam
Unfortunately so 🙃
They ruined that beautiful fireplace
Yep 😭
The fireplace before is extremely ugly
Everyone has their preferences! What do you dislike about it?
