Matt, I have enjoyed your videos for over a year now and will continue to watch! I have a quick question for you. What brand band saw do you use and why? I would like to purchase a 14” for my self and am looking for input.

    • @NextLevelCarpentry
      @NextLevelCarpentry  3 года назад +3

Thanks for watching NLC videos Brody... much appreciated! I started out 40 years ago with a Craftsman bandsaw... more of a toy than a saw. Upgraded to the classic Delta in the late 1980's. It was functional and a great value for the work I did with it but I wanted to upgrade to a saw with more depth capacity and more reliable/robust blade guides so about 15 years ago I upgraded to the Laguna HD 16 I have now. At the time I felt they had the best blade guide system available and the saw has done all I've asked of it, which can be quite demanding at times. I imagine other brands have closed the quality/price/performance gap in those 15 years so I'd have to re-evaluate the marketplace to make any current recommendations. Regardless of other factors I do feel that blade guides are key to performance so pay attention to that. Also the 'bigger is better' mentality for tools has merit but I recommend figuring out the sweet spot between size and performance for the work you plan to do since size is an ongoing cost because bigger saws use bigger blades that are more expensive, whether you're using them to capacity or not.
Here's a current Laguna model to consider although I've not searched or compared models recently: www.amazon.com/dp/B00F3VAWHM/?ref=idea_lv_dp_ov_d&tag=aiponsite-20&linkCode=ic6&ascsubtag=amzn1.ideas.29WVINIJF4EUJ Good luck in your quest!
What ever machine you choose, having a bandsaw in your shop is a game changer for giving you the capabilities they offer for the projects you do... I'd not want to have to do without one, that's for sure! Best, Matt

This is only the tip of a seriously huge iceberg, Scott: ruclips.net/video/v-sdNZ_ObYQ/видео.html Welcome to a whole new world! BTW while I'm really liking Starbond products and highly recommend them you'd find that pretty much any brand CA works fine but aerosol accelerator (again, any brand) is absolutely essential for any reasonable success. Hi, Matt,
I use a different brand of activated CA glue-which as far as I can tell, uses the same chemistry as Starbond. Although the aerosol accelerator can is also a 2 1/8” dia., the plastic glue containers are ca. 2” x 1” ovals. Hence, i made oval holes for the glue containers, and did not narrow the block. Since I’m a California lad, I used a scrap of clear California Doug Fir with a nice grain pattern. After the dreaded sanding process, I finished with Tung Oil-done atop a superior used Zachary’s pizza box (deep dish type).
I considered shooting a video in which I would shamelessly proclaim my creativity. But I was reluctant to become a CADDY CAD.
Thanks for helping make my shop more organized!

      Matt,
Three (3) matters stand in the way of my posting pictures on Pinterest:
      1) I’m thinking about version 2.0 which will have two ports for my slower setting CA glue-which I still find useful.
      2) I’ve just started a project for She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed. That is top priority.
      3) I haven’t the foggiest about how to post photos on Pinterest. So, I’ll need to spend some quality time with my iMac...

      Next Level Carpentry
      Matt,
Actually, I am a chemist-PhD type. So, I understand what the chemicals are. I read the labels of both companies’ products. In particular, I checked the accelerators/activators.
There are several ingredients in both, including solvents. But the key ingredient in Starbond is N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine. The key ingredient in the product I use, Stick Fast, is Benzenamine, N,N,4-trimethyl-.
To a non-chemist, it might seem like these are two different materials. They are NOT: they are just two different names for the same chemical compound.
This is NOT unusual. For example, ethanol, the stuff of alcoholic beverages, is also called ethyl alcohol.
I apologize if I’ve gotten too deeply in the proverbial weeds!
      Warmest regards, Joe⚗️

I always wondered if I was the only one who spends more time making jigs, racks, organizers, and holders... than I spend making actual projects. In my office, it's the opposite. I have stacks of books, papers, and journals in a highly personalized disorder, where I crank out the actual work without hindrance. I suppose, that's how I'm most entertained in either pursuit. Weird.
Thank you, for a highly entertaining and informative video.

You're welcome for the video Coffey. I respect those who spend time making worthwhile jigs, etc and who appreciate something well made. Sounds like your woodworking is a hobby to compliment your occupation where it's no doubt a great diversion from stacks of papers? Probably the main difference for me is that my occupation and significant hobby happen to be the same activity. I do spend a fair amount of time making 'accessories' but no where near as much as making actual projects for my day job. The time I spend on 'recreational projects' is time I DON'T spend watching football, sports, car races or any other TV. I don't ever see myself making accessories for accessories sake though although each thing might be a bit over the top with form exceeding function. Guess I got off on a 'sharing' tangent, sorry. @@NextLevelCarpentry Merry Christmas to you. Oddly, my day job had a lot more in common than most people realize, which was Chemistry and Physics, for many years in the environmental industry. Most of the things I needed, I made. I think that most people who accept that they can build things with their hands, often find themselves drifting back to the same kinds of activities, rather than just sitting and watching something like TV. It's a great contributor to finding yourself making holders for your cyanoacrylate resins, or a foam cutting jig, rather than sitting in front of the tube... which I very seldom do. When I'm not puttering, I read, and follow trains of thoughts through references, and other works. It's all about a desire to understand how things work, in the end.

Hey Tim, I come from an old school background and remember well the days before useful CA glue was available... or even invented! It's likely the top product on my 'how did I ever live without it' list for carpentry/cabinetry/millwork, etc. I'll sound snobby here but will say that I think anyone who 'backs up' CA glue with pin nails is flat out 'doing it wrong'! If CA isn't strong enough alone I use screws and, this may be upsetting for you, think pocket screws and pin nails are WAY over used in woodworking these days. Don't get me wrong; they're useful to the point of invaluable in applications they're designed for but I think many use them as a crutch when hobbled by an inability to think through, plan and design better. Re-watch the segments in this video where I use CA for assembly and also filling/accenting defects to start your mind thinking to answer your "are there project-related uses" for CA glue.
