The handles clamp the sandpaper in place when they close and release it when they open. Two or three thin sheets of stiff plastic (like from a large soda bottle may work better than the thin sheet metal and be easier to get. Get project plans on my website for sale: ibuildit.ca/plans/
Maybe you should make a second board with the marker screw, so you don't have to be screwing it and unscrewing it, you just swap the boards when you need it ..... (it's just one more contribution to your brilliant idea)
The concept of using the metal (or plastic) to grip the paper is a great idea. My first thought upon opening the video was "how does he keep the paper from loosening when closing the handles?" Then when you showed the sheet metal I was like "BINGO". I'm definitely going to attempt a version of this idea in my own shop.
ha ha...cracked me up when you put it to use for the first time and the paper just slipped right out. Love how you laughed at yourself when it happened! Great video, John!
Oh I recognise that mad laugh when the sand paper just comes out. I've done that more than once when I thought I'm basically done with the project only to find out some oversight or change early on meant I have more work to do.
I am but a humble beginner woodworker however whenever I watch your videos I feel like I want to go back in my workshop and start building something. I bought several of your plans so far, and I thank you for making them so easy to follow. Thank you for the wonderful educational videos and have a good day!
@@timhofstetter5654 I'm sure his techniques are good for him, because he leveled up the become the master woodworker that he is now. I still have to use two push sticks.
For such a simple tool, there was a lot to design (and fix). Well done. I like the look of the two discs on top. It gives it a bit of a mid-century modern look to it.
I like how you kept your fail sanding block in the video. Makes it more realistic and also knowing that even experienced woodworkers mess up too! Love the video and the idea.
John I have followed you for years now. I am very impressed with your ideas and results with wood. Please keep on coming up with these wonderful ideas. May God bless.
Every time I see the table saw you built I am in Awe ! Plus all the other shop tools you have made. I like backing sandpaper I will have to make one or two.
Mr. Heisz, I enjoyed your video and I appreciated your including your mistake about having to increase the thickness of the metal shims. I've bought plastic sanding handles, but this wood one probably has the weight and sturdiness that I need. Thank you, sir.
It's amazing how even John's half inch 7 layer plywood makes every project look 100x better than mine. My HomeDepot only likes to stock the 3 layer 1/2" ply that feels as smooth as 100 grit sandpaper.
Juat grab a block of wood, chuck the sand paper under and leave enough over the sides so you can add a rubber band around it. Work wonders. Nice build by the way like your way of thinking👍
Oh man, I chuckled with you when you made the first pass on the narrower one... Thanks for including that, the aluminum flashing instead of the steel was a great fix 👍
Cool idea! Love the genuine "oh shit" laugh when the paper first came off haha. Thanks for sharing the trials and tribulations of making something like this with us and also how you went about fixing it. Makes for very relatable content. Thanks much!
You never cease to amaze me John! Your mind is incredable to come up with such a creation! There is someone else I watch that just came out with a extremly simple design for making dowels. Just two jigsaw blades and one piece of wood. You maybe interested in- JSK-Koubou. Thank you for sharing your geious with us!
Great little project John, as usual! I just finished making your mini crosscut sled and I absolutely love it. Thabks for the great content, hope you're doing well!
John: The sander looks pretty cool, better than the wedge one you did years ago. I would like you to give a brief tour of your large tool box and show how you have organized the drawers. Thank You, David Adair
Excelente proyecto muy bien desarrollado y mejor ejecutado , muchas gracias por compartir sus conocimientos y experiencias , un saludo cordial y por supuesto un gran like desde Narón , Galicia ( España)
Dear John Heisz: Allow me to admire your dexterity, shown on the many practical tools made by yourself! On the design of Sanding Blocks, let me tell you that after trying several DIY sanding block designs for years, I found that most of them are a little too much on the "heavy" side and somewhat tiresome... being too tall. Then I found a simpler, more practical design that uses 3"X 18" SANDING BELTS... It takes advantage from the belt being very easy and fast to put around or to exchange, and then easy to put enough tension on it, which transforms the belt into a very tight and flat sanding surface, making a very practical, lightweight sanding block! It was so effective that someone found it so good, that he ended up stealing it! It was a commercial design made from fibre reinforced tough plastic. So I made a copy of it from wood, and while somewhat heavier, it was still light enough and functional, providing a long and effective sanding surface. The lower profile puts the hand closer to the surface being sanded, which reduces any rocking or tipping tendencies, augmenting control and maximizing the applied pressure. On the other hand, the closer your hand is to the sanding surface, the lower the pressure you need to apply to grab the sanding block, and the lower the tiring effect you get!... try it and I'm sure it could become your favorite too! Best regards from Mexico.
pure beauty! thank you so so much! Though i make everything by hand, i will be able to make it. It's well thought. will not be perfect like yours though

Finally, a project of yours that ended up how my projects do, loved the laugh too. I usually insert a few choice words instead of the laugh
Good job.....
How do you feel about some milk jug HDPE melted to shape?

Yes
@@timhofstetter5654 what do you mean?
I loved hearing the reaction and the follow up to the sandpaper sliding out ..
Yes
That stop motion sequence at the start is enough to warrant a like (or 42)
The sheer number of tools that youve made for yourself is genuinely impressive
Yes a lot

Isn’t that the truth, we’ve all been there. It’s all in how you handle the setback. A good laugh is a good approach.
@@johncware66 Yeah, but most of us have tried the 'throwin' shit' approach at least once though :)
I really like this!
Thanks :)
🤝🤝🤝👍👍👍
That's a very simple, effective and self momentum creating comment
I really like this too
We enjoy seeing your work
The laugh (6:26) at the paper sticking to the wood was worth the price of entry! Good solution and project.
Haha yes and also his action of slamming the gadget and walking away, added the comedic value
Sanding my new sanding block with my old sanding block
Nice work👍
I use my grandfather’s block it is now over 100 years old. It just shows a good idea is never out of date!

Here it is in action...damn it! Okay, here is how to fix that and make it work. 90% of the projects I do, no lie. Great video John.
Another great idea, John. I built 3 of your old, old sanding blocks a few years ago and they get used on every project i built. Keep up the good work!
😊👍
genius idea!
Thanks David :)
Your ability to design and make tools and equipment is amazing.
I love all your very clever designs and solutions.

Very cool John. Awesomely simple design.
I cracked up when you used a store bought sanding block to make your home made sanding block.
Fantastic video as always!

Great little project, and a clever video. Thanks John!
Fantastic, John! Amazing work! 😃

Wonderful stuff. Great narration.

The wingnut industry will prevent this from ever catching on. Love it!
Another winner John! Wow, where do you get your motivation and ideas. Kudo's to you! Another thumbs up!
You sir are a true craftsman. 👍
Such a good design I wouldn’t be surprised to see bootleg copies of it come to market.
Good work! Thanks for the idea!
As always good stuff John!
Great project and idea.
Funny, I've always used 2 pieces of 2x4 screwed together to clamp the sandpaper in between ;) This is kind of the luxury version.
This is GREAT. Any chance you will put the plans back on your wes site?? Would be appreciated! !! !!!
The laughter after the fail. Awesomly 🤪😜🤪
Dam it Man, Your soo good, even Your videos are the best, keep on
Sir, has anyone ever told you that you're a genius?

Great Sander John! I´m sure you will refine it really good and then come up with a good building plan. :)
Loved this video!!
we all need to learn to do more and laugh always
Genius.! Well done..
Muy buenos vídeos y muy buenos trabajos. Te felicito!!
Built your earlier version where the paper locks in a dove tail. This looks easier to use may give it a try.
Fun stuff thanks for the video.
Really cool design, John~!!
Thanks. Another interesting design.
Very good job
That laugh had me smiling made my morning 🤣
Very cool project!
neat design
Do self-locking stem bolts next!
