Thank you for these videos! I’m 13 and my dad was in a band playing bass and he showed me a few riffs on it himself. I mentioned it to my music teacher and got me involved in a band when im in year 9 after summer… so i got a bass and im trying to learn as much as i can so i can improve ready for when school starts again 😂 I love how you explain things, it makes it 10X easier to learn!

My favourite walking bassline is James Brown's gospel song in Blues Brothers, The Old Landmark - absolutely pumping, dancing bass work that epitomises a walking line.

Sometimes when you have just started learning how to play a walking line, there's a dangerous desire to overcomplicate things. Like: "oh, that guy played so many cool notes and my line sounds lame". I guess the fact is - 'that guy' probably uses same notes but at the right moment... Or maybe not. Still confused.

Mark, what mute are you using on your P bass?
I need one for my Precision. I’m tired of dicking around with foam.

I think he is trying to make you learn to read bass clef which is easier than tabs when you "get it". I slowed down the video when he plays it through with the music at the end and listened to him and worked out the notes whilst read the music and playing along. Took me a bit over half an hour to learn it and play it beginning to end. Once you learn it it is actually quite easy to play.

This wasn’t about teaching you a line with ’tabs’. The whole point is to give you a springboard for your studies. Those 7 things are essential for learning how to walk. Walking is an improvised art. Tab is about as antithetical to walking as you could get.

Also worth mentioning, the lesson material (including tab of the bass line) is here: www.talkingbass.net/7-things-you-need-to-work-on-if-you-want-to-learn-walking-bass/

It really is worth starting to learn to read bass tab though. It really is amazing how beneficial it has been, as now you have more choice then being limited to the tab.
