I learnt to play Bass guitar back in the late 50s/60s (Self taut) and enough to get by with. There was no internet tuition in those days.I stopped playing and mothballed my bass in the late 60s. Your tuition segments have compelled me to resurrect my Fender Precision and start practicing again where I left off ! Thanks Mark your instruction is easy to follow.
I absolutely love this channel. You honestly help me a lot, I really like how you explain every lesson. Well, as someone who has been struggling with walking bass, I have heard of this 1-3-5-C formula coming up a lot lately, and it really is a great place to start. Like you said, its a good starting point for those of us who were completely lost on how to start walking. I am looking forward to the new series. Thanks!
Just work up the complete Am7. ACEG. This hack is only for getting on your feet. Obviously, to walk properly you need to take things a LOT further. Some chord changes won’t work as well as others with this hack but it does get you accustomed to making use of chord tones and understanding the concept of chromatic approach.

A related hack is to create ascending and descending lines with triads and chromatic approaches, but resolving into a chord tone of the next chord. This allows for more fluid lines where you can almost arbitrarily decide where to ascend and descend. Great way to really learn triads. And because these are strong chord tones you don't necessarily have to hit the root on 1 all the time

Thanks a lot. I use the Precision for certain stuff. It has Jamerson HEAVY gauge Labella Flats and foam muting under the bridge cover. Doesn't work too well for some other styles but when it does work it works great!

I’m playing in band and we all love RHCP the problem is when I write the bass lines with or without my band I can’t really get that sweet Flea sound could you make a video on how to create flea alike bass lines like californication, can’t stop, higher ground, dani california etc. Also I would like to thank you for all of your videos because I feel like I truly have improved as a bass player and a musician watching them. Robin Kroplewski you just named 5 songs from a period of 20 years. Fleas first 3 albums were pretty much all slapping fast style machine gun triplets, mute notes and constant sync with the drummer (higher ground) later after blood sugar sex magic him and John frusticante had an amazing way of blending with each other. And at the same time Flea would blend with chad on the drums. And it’s at this time imo they separated themselves from 95% of other bands. They all really blend together perfectly. Californication is a perfect example, by themselves the bass, the drums and especially the guitar is very simple but put all the sounds together and you have one of the greatest most recognizable songs in all time. By the time you reach Dani California flea has over 100 studio songs and has traveled the world on tour multiple times, and he’s never stopped trying new things and progressing as a musician. On stadium Arcadium you will find basslines unlike anything flea has done before. I mean hump de bump is a great example The song is split between pulling on the a and g every other beat and then following kedis in the chorus with those crazy fast licks. Something not really common for a bass but ended up being one of there best off the album. My point is I guess flea just blazed his own trail and he didn’t wait till he was as great as Jaco or Nathan east before they dropped their first album they let it flow and did a whole hell of a lot of heroin and other narcotics but let’s just hope that isn’t a requisite.
And as Flea put it “I’d create a part, and then do my best to just completely destroy it on the bass. I’d play the most out there, fanatical, crazy attack I could come up with”.
My thought for you is, sure listen to others and be inspired...but be yourself. Especially in writing and creating your own songs. It’s just frequencies, make your own sound.
I know that’s “easier said than done”, but knowing that that’s your goal is the point. Keep rocking (funking, slapping, popping, woohooing) : )

Hey Mark, do you have some sponge or other ‘mutie’ substance under the chrome cover over the bridge? Your sound has a beautiful flatness to it. Very appropriate for going for a walk ...
Mark replied in another post that it has LaBella Deep Talkin' heavy gauge flatwound strings and a foam mute under the bridge cover. Its the same bass he used for the Jameson technique. Love that tone.

Walking bass lines are walking bass lines. Yes it applies to other musical genres too. However, it works best with progressions with one chord per bar

You'll also hear them in blues and ska, and sometimes rock.

Hey Mark, I'm having some issues with the backing tracks. They all just link to the same drum beat (at one tempo) on soundcloud with no piano. Any chance you could link to the backing tracks you use in the video?
Just checked them. The tracks all work fine. You just click the play button. Are you accidentally clicking the 'soundcloud' button?
Great lesson !! Could you PLEASE raise the level of your bass ? It's pretty light soloing but washes out when you play with with backing track !!!
The bass is actually really high in the mix. Are you by any chance listening on a mobile device? If you are then be sure to use headphones. You'll never get a good bass response on a phone or tablet.

But When I Am Playing In A Chord Progression Of C,Am,F,G I Am Having Difficulty In Moving From Am To F.
(C To Am I Am Following The Same Pattern As In The Video)
Any note of the A minor chord can work to lead to the F. The A is the 3rd of F , the C is the 5th and the E is a half step below F so it is stepping up to it. You can also walk down from A to G to F ... A to F sharp to F for chromatic.... Hope that's helpful.... Bass!!!
Mark, i know this is out of context. But would you recommend de-tunning bass everytime you dont play it? Some of my friend gives me this crazy advise because the neck will bend due to tension.

Don't know what mark would say but I'd say hell no. The kneck of your bass should be made for the tension of having strings on. Every time you tune your bass back up it would have to settle again.

You are fun to listen to. You are a good teacher. In this video, it was difficult to hear your bass. Your pretty blue bass would have been better. I'm a guitar player that's learning bass. This reminds me of a bass player that I used to play with that I didn't feel choked up enough near his bridge so all of his notes sounded muffled and therefore the pitches were hard to hear. It was disconcerting as I was unclear clear what chord he was playing on. I don't think this would ever be the case with you. The video sound is the problem here. Maybe your bass wasn't loud enough.

Are these new thumbnails just tongue in cheek? I used to recommend your videos to others over Scott Devine because you seemed to avoid the clickbait titles and the padded video content.
Not that there’s anything wrong with your content - you still have great videos - but I honestly can’t tell anymore if the thumbnails are a big industry-wide joke or not...
Hate to tell you but the thumbnails are simply there to pull people in and I'll do anything it takes (barring dishonesty) because I have confidence in the content. If the content was bad or unrelated then you would be completely justified in your criticism. The fact of the matter is people that like my vids will watch anyway. If a bright or silly or intriguing thumbnail brings in those people that haven't seen me then that's all I could ask for because the content is there whether they like it or not.

I understand where Mark is coming from to build his channel because it is a business and he puts a lot of work into his content. I used to like SBL when he started out but find him annoying now and the click bait etc you mention Alex isn't something I like or the image on this video, looks cheesey to me. I don't think Mark needs it and hopefully it doesn't turn people away from watching because his 1 of the best and my favourite. Keep up the good work, cheers.
@@mrbungle7586 of course the thumbnail is cheesy. The whole point of the thumbnail is to stand out in a sea of videos. As I've said, if the content was bad then fair enough. But if the content is good then there is no reason to complain. Plus that thumbnail sums up my general everyday personality pretty well. Maybe I'm just a dick.

Thelonious Coltrane he’s given us a very informative video for FOR FREE. You’d be paying £20 an hour for someone to teach you that, plus he has so many more videos, stop being ungrateful
It's all there. Use your ears more and play as much as possible even when you don't know much, get used to the tones all over the feet board and how the patterns relate, then you can learn by eye and by EAR, trust me, it's better that way, you want to have that skill. Better to learn it earlier rather than later.
When he plays the first note in a set, find it on your fret board, listen, play, pause rewind, listen, find , play along, rewind pause listen etc etc etc
Learn patterns, and mess around making up what ever you want, but always strive to add more in terms of lessons (RUclips or what ever) so to avoid becoming stuck in a rut.
I love your work. Sorry though you are encouraging the use of the word 'hack', in fact I am about to turn off, I wonder who told you you should use it so frequently, you should slap them. There are no secrets in music and no hacks, just a lot of laziness, mental and physical and the uncomfortable truth that it takes a lot more work than the media suggests to the ignorant. Ok, that's seems like the tenth time I've heard the word hack since I started typing, bye.
Did you actually watch the video? I hate to tell you but there are indeed shortcuts to getting by in certain circumstances because I've used them myself. But (and this is a big but!) they are just ways of getting by. True understanding of a subject takes time. A long time. That's so obvious it really doesn't need stating and I'm pretty sure 100% of viewers are aware of that. The walking course I'm creating is huge and covers many areas of harmony, fretboard knowledge and general musicianship. This 'hack' is mentioned in the course as a simple way of introducing triads and chromatic approach. Both important aspects of walking. And the 'hack' does work...

I also enjoy them because I am a teacher myself and admire your technique. You can see me improvise on my channel if you like, it should tell you something. Please don't feel you need to defend yourself against me, I am a fan. I do know a lot of ways of practicing that are more than effective than most, none of them are hacks. I hate the word, not you, as I said I am a fan. I
@@davidfreel1451 Unfortunately the lingo I use in vids is very far removed from how I would generally speak. Over the years the nature of the business has forced me to use buzzwords and Americanisms. Certain words provoke certain responses and help to pull people in. It's not even dumbing down. Whatever works works.
