    Absolutely breathtaking singing. So heartfelt, and an unutterably beautiful arrangement

    I've been listening to this arrangement since 2007. This video was gone for awhile here on RUclips. I loved how she interpreted this song with an embellishment of classical and jazz. Plus her phrasing here was exceptional. Her breathing as well here was impressive. This concert was staged in China in 2007. Thanks for the beautiful music, Renée!

      Agreed! Absolutely ravishing, that silken legato spinning diamonds in the air, and so heartfelt. It's her best performance of this piece.

    Renée Fleming is a great artist, and she understands the American Songbook; but I think something was going on here. She's not letting the words and music do what they would naturally do if she just sang the song. This was the era of all those singing competition shows on American TV, so maybe she was caught up in all that over-ornamentation craze that was around in pop music at the time.
    In the end this performance of one of the most soulful songs ever produced by Tin Pan Alley greats is flat and soulless.

    Yikes. Thank God Mr. Arlen wasn't around to hear that disturbingly bombastic rendering. And by the way, for the sake of respectful attribution, the song is written by Harold Arlen AND E.Y. Harburg, and its correct title is simply "Over the Rainbow."🌈

    I love Renee Fleming, but good Lord, this is just a dreadful, overreaching mess. Dreadful. And if you think this eclipses Judy Garland's raw, poignant original, please take a walk in the woods or spend some time staring at the sunset on a lovely, lonely evening, cause you is out of touch.

    • @kedemberger8773

      I agree. Absolutely horrible. Try Eileen Farrell - she was an opera singer who could sing show tunes and jazz simply and beautifully.

    • @chocolatesouljah
      @chocolatesouljah 2 года назад +2

      @@kedemberger8773 I haven't heard Ms. Farrell sing "Rainbow" but her version of the show tune "Mountain Greenery" is definitive in my opinion. And her opera singing was incredible! I think the reason why Farrell was good at pop/show tunes was she was very comfortable/developed in her chest voice and her popular tunes voice sounds like a different person from her operatic chest voice. In pop music she sounds "smoky" for lack of better wording.

    • @kedemberger8773
      @kedemberger8773 2 года назад

      @@chocolatesouljah she was just a helluva artist, one of the most sensitive musicians I've ever heard on record. Always intensely musical in phrasing, style, text, whatever. The technique helps for sure, but without the warmth, humanity and sheer musicianship it wouldve been just fine instead of gorgeous. Her early Irish songs for the radio are a blessing. Her French Song is radiant and intimate, her Ozean is the best I've ever heard. Try locating the film Interrupted Melody, soap biopic starring Eleanor Parker about the legendary Marjorie Lawrence. That's where Farrell sings Over the Rainbow.
