It took me 3 decades to figure out that I was never an amateur photographer. I am a camera LOVER who makes photos. All those people who say, "Gear doesn't matter." I 'get' what they are saying, "in theory", however, for ME, there are cameras that just speak to me. Just holding them in my hands and listening to their shutter's operate sparks joy inside of me. The Pentax 67, the Nikon F2AS, the Nikon F4s, Nikon D3s, the Canon EOS 5 (film camera), and the Canon EOS 1N..........however, if I could only keep one, it would be the Nikon F3HP. The form factor, weight, balance, ergonomics, haptics, sound, etc. LOVE the Nikon F3HP so much I have 3 of them. For ME, the F3HP is 1/8 of an inch from perfection. Sure, the flash synch speed could be faster, but my only real knock on the camera is that Nikon should have done a better job of illuminating the meter reading for low-light use.
I have to admit to the same obsession, but for over 40 years. I have an FM3a, F3T HP, F5, D3, D850 & Z9. Similarly, if pushed to chose only one, I would keep the F3 with the FM3a a close second.

Hello from Finland. I am a fully amateur photographer recently interested getting back to film. I have had a Canon digital SLR earlier. A year ago I bought a Nikon F3 and it has been amazing camera. I have always liked to shoot with aperture priority with my old digital camera and I love F3 and it's "A" mode. I don't care it has batteries and electronics, I just love how it behaves. Just set the aperture, focus and shoot. I love how old fashioned and still easy to use this camera is. My album is now getting filled with great photos, best film photos ever (I used a normal pocket camera in the 90's). I hope my F3 will last my lifetime.
I have Nikon F2 and Nikon F5 both in fantastic condition, love them both. Nikon is the best camera manufacturer in the world bar none. Work horse camera's built to last . Love your videos thanks for entertaining us.
Just posting my F5 and F4 for sale ! I simply never shoot them. The F3 is my go to…. Is it better ?! Nope, it’s just what I prefer …. I do however … fancy a punt at the F6
Agree wholehartedly Robert, it is simply bulletproof, slick and gorgeous. If you want cheaper, smaller and lighter the FE is also a great option, and better than the AE1 in my opinion, just love the metering with the match needle system, great for Aperature Priority and manual, nothing simpler or easier to understand IMO plus still silky smooth in operation. Love the content mate keep it up, best wishes from the good ole UK.

I used my F3 during the 1990s and 2000s with the 20/2.8, 50/1.2, 80-200/4 and a few other manual Nokkor lenses. I gave it to my nephew a few years ago, and he actually use it for his professional work. I got Olympus OM-D E-M5 in 2013, and have been only using Micro4/3s gear since then, but I enjoyed very much using the F3 back when I was young.

I want an F3. I have an AE-1 and a Minolta SRT 202. I would sell both to get an F3. The Canon F1 was similar. My Dad bought an AE-1 when I was born and all family photos he ever took of us have been made with it. He had not shot a roll with it for ten years or so when he gave it to me around 2013, when I really went into film photography. I have used it twice. I will never give it away, because it has some sentimental value. But I really do not like it as a camera at all. I never ever saw the need for shutter priority. It simply is not the way I want to shoot. I want to preselect my aperture as the most important aspect. I am perfectly ok with manually adjusting the time to match the aperture manually, I am also ok with the camera doing it for me. But I want my aperture to be selected first and then I want to adjust the time. I cannot do this easily with the AE-1. Of course I could set it to e.g. f/8, then meter and adjust the time until the needle points at 8. But no, not my way. Great if you like it, but I really don‘t. And regarding your preference for the F3: It is my second best camera and probably the second best manual film SLR (I do not think about AF SLRs; the process of shooting feels too much like digital). I got into film photography in 2011, buying a Nikon FE to compliment my D700. I sold my Nikon DSLR and all my AF-S and AF-D lenses in 2016 and only kept my Nikon SLRs and AI/AIS glass. My FE is on permanent loan with a friend and I do have the following ones: F, F2A, F2AS and F3. I do take the F3 quite often, but if I had to burn three and keep one, the F3 would go into the fire in a heartbeat. My F2AS is by far my favorite 135 camera - I actually looked for this specific copy for months. I wanted black, I wanted a really nice optical condition (mint was not necessary, but as close to as possible) and the first three digits of the serial number were well-defined. I was born on 1st of November and my F2AS was built in November or December of my birth year, so it is +- 30 days as old as I am. A cheaper F2AS in mint condition from any other serial number group would not have been acceptable for me. Had it „sovered“ immediately without even running a single film through it. Somebody will inherit that thing from me. Other than that the only way that this machine will not stay with me is fire, burglary or a zombie apocalypse (where I‘d have to decide between carrying the F2 or a Katana).

For me the F3 is a lttle bit too 'small' in my hands and too 'poor' in progress to the F2 - only best suitable/handy with the MD-4 motor drive, but I don't need a motor drive. So my best choice is the F2, and this particularly because 'she' doesn't need any battery for working, only for measuring when you are a beginner and cannot evaluate lighting conditions. The F3's 'emergency manual shutter speed' of 1/90 sec is crass poor. And a 1/75 sec for flash sync isn't any progress to the F2, just as little as the 1/2000 sec that the F2 can produce just as well. I have been experienced in all of them: F, F2, F3, F4, and all cheaper, semi-professional Nikons since 1971, and I am only fascinated by the very 'heavy metals' of them;-)) The F3 is a good camera, indeed, but not sturdy enough. Today many F3 users complain of a loss of the LCD display - it's exasperating. By the way: The least noise comes from the shutter of the oldest, the Nikon F.
Absolutely wonderful comment and thank you so much for sharing ! I agree that the F3 is not without its flaws, but the overall results vs the cons are still very good. I also agree that at this level, it is really down to personal preference ! Hey , if the F2 works for you then hats off ! It’s still up there for me also
Yawn. Such an old tired lame excuse. Nearly EVERYTHING today has batteries and we all somehow manage to cope every single day with them. Besides, the two batteries for the F3 are tiny, cheap and easy to find all day long. If the batteries fail, get this, you replace them. How hard is that? They are also the exact same batteries in the F2! And the same ones used in pretty much all Nikons from the '70s and '80s, whether to power the shutter or power the meter.

You’re the worst mate…. Now I need to buy an f2 ;-)))
@@robbellphoto Lol.... ;)
Why can't you pronounce lever correctly?
