- In this video I talk about how to find your light and shadows through color value and value studies. Value studies help you practice making colors lighter or darker in watercolor without all the color getting in the way. They act as a guide for when you’re ready to paint your final color study.

How insanely cool that this gal made an entire tutorial to address someone's comment and help them (and us)!? That's so considerate and helpful - really hard to find.
This video answers so many questions I have as a beginner. My brain was having a hard time working it all out as I paint. Thanks!
Helpful! I tend to wind up with paintings that are all the same value. Will try that exercise in value scales.
One of the best explanations of light and dark value with colors I have ever seen. Now it makes so much more sense! Thanks!
I am brand new to watercolor and at painting anything. I am trying to absorb as much information as possible. This was one of the best and helpful videos I have seen yet! Thank you so much! Now, I am going to binge watch you and practice!❤
So helpful. I know im supposed to start trablucent but i lose it and mess it all up. Im new and trying to learn how to use color overall. Thanks!
That was very, very helpful. For those like me who struggle with loosening up with our painting, I think it would be helpful if you included the reference photo. I think seeing how you deviated from the photo and didn’t limit yourself with the details of the photo would be very helpful.
Hi! I had the reference photo on the right side of the screen for both paintings because I do think it helps to see that it’s not an exact copy
Thank you! Now I start to understand Watercolour contrast
Thank you so much for giving us a detailed demonstration on light and shadow! :)
Ahhh this is so cool 🥰
Ill definitely be trying out the tip to do traditional value studies like this! thank you!
Thank you so much for this wonderful lesson. I’m glad I found you on RUclips.
This has taught me so much! I feel encouraged to paint now that I am beginning to understand light/ color value. Thank you
kristin, these two paintings are gorgeous!
This is great! It would be helpful to have a part two where maybe the lights and darks aren’t so intricately interwoven. It just seems so complicated.
You know, I agree 😅 I was thinking this morning that maybe a negative space painting was too complicated. I’ll try to do some simpler subjects on RUclips shorts this week
That would be awesome! And a lot of work I’m sure. thank you so much!
@@kristinvanleuvenCan you post the link of the short here please?
This is where we learn the meaning of “practice makes perfect”!

This explanation and demo is very helpful. I do struggle with values......need to practice, practice, practice. Thank you.
Thank you so much! ❤
This helps tremendously!! I will be using and reusing this video to assist with my progress in growing as an artist.
You're so welcome! Thank you for the feedback and I wish you the best of luck 💕
How immensely helpful to do the grey version first . This helps so very much .
Great tutorial and very helpful
Thanks
Great information and wonderful little studies!
Excellent simple fun to try
What a great explanation! Thank you!
Thank you so much now my paitings look more realistic 💗
Thank you really 😊
Loved this exercise. I have a multi colors, actually 36. You name the colors you use, but with these kits it doesn't give the names. I am not always sure of the colors I am using. Maybe this is a silly thing to be concerned about. I am so new at painting. Love your videos. You do a great job explaining things.
It was very useful, thank you!
Great demo!!!
Another fantastic tutorial!❤
very cool Thank you Kristin!! And thank you for NOT adding elevator music in the background
great lesson, thanks!
amazing tutorial thank you
Nice tutorial ❤❤❤❤
This video is awesome
This is a great video, thank you! Do you pause to let the paint dry between each phase (light, middle, dark values) or just go straight through? I feel like when I try to do that my paints all bleed out, maybe a sign I’m using too much water?
Hi. I'm new to your RUclips channel. This video was really helpful and I love the explanation as you work. I have just started a watercolour class with a local artist. My first attempt was no masterpiece but I enjoyed the process. I chose to paint a bee. I think I would say it was a loose painting, there were some hair details that I really struggled with. The tutor advised to run the corner of the paint tube through the wet paint. It did leave a line and a slight groove in the paper for the next layer of paint to go into. I wondered if you had any tips on this kind of detail. I will definitely be following you for more tutorials. I live in England. Thanks Aniela 🐝🖌️
A very big Thank you!!
Such a useful tutorial !!! Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏. I still have a hard time figuring out the difference between light and shadow obtained with the intensity of the colour (adding more or less water) and shadow obtained by mixing complimentary colours (ex adding red to green). When should we use one technique or the other? I don’t lnow if this makes sense but it would be awesome if you can explain this 🙏
This was very helpful! Thanks. Charlie in Virginia
Glad it was helpful! Thanks Charlie
I just found your channel and am enjoying the videos! I am fairly new to watercolor. This is a random question but I've noticed you don't seem to mind when colors mix a bit inside your half-pans. Whereas I'm always neurotically rinsing my brush so that I can keep my colors pure. But it makes mixing colors so hard! Do you just not worry about it? What do you do if you need pure yellow and your yellow has blue in it??
Brilliant xx
Thank you thank you!!!
Thank you!
Thank you✨😊✨
Do you offer classes anywhere?
Thank you. This great but in my struggling watercolor artist's mind, tis still complicated.
Wonderful ❤😂
Another simple way to get values for a printed picture is to lay a piece of Red cellophane on the image. This will mute most colours.
Wow !
❤From Poland. Yet ....❤🩹❤🩹❤🩹❤🩹
Aha! So you are drawing in the really light/white patches, and stems, and paint around them. Common sense! I keep thinking I'll just leave a space while I'm painting. Doesn't work. Thanks!
Did you let it dry between all the green layers ?
Kind of. By the time I was done with the first layers they were pretty dry. Some bleeding for sure, but I didn’t dry it specifically
