These videos are absolutely the most informative and visual for guitar making. As a guy just starting out, I am so glad I found this channel. Straight to the point and addictive to watch. Thank you
Hey Richi - thanks for your kind words! That really means a lot to me...I hope you get a chance to check out my website - you will find most of my videos are there: guitarmaking.co.uk/
Last year I decided I wanted to make a strat. I also remembered that at school every year we do anything furniture related in a class that I was taking. So I bought some materials and convinced the teacher to let me do a guitar instead of doing a desk ( had to help painting the school benches and tables) I had everything ready to start my build and now I can’t because of COVID. Next year I won’t be able to use the workshop as it was only intended for students that are from 7th to 9th grade. Soooo now I guess I’ll do this myself with the help of my dad since he knows more about tools and stuff.
Great video, it has helped me a lot. I was at first overwhelmed by how much equipment I'd need to get started but turns out I just need a band saw and some files. something you may want to consider is sharpening tools like bench grinder and sharpening stones. you wouldn't last very long without these !
Hey Tom - sorry for the delay - missed this Q. Even the smallest bandsaw will do for making guitars...but if you want to make your own blanks then you might need a larger one. Mine is a Scheppach BASA 3.0 Vario but don't get too hung up on it. Get the biggest/best you can afford. Check it is 240v and not 3 phase! Happy hunting!!
I just need to buy a band saw, a couple of hand tools and some glue and I should be ready. I've got a fret levelling file and beam, crowning file, abrasive fret rubbers, metal polishing compound etc. I'll have to watch this video again and make notes of everything I need. I have a particular guitar that I want to make but I guess I will follow your design for the first attempt. I'm looking forward to it. I will be in touch about the course soon, I just need a little more time to get everything together. This is going to be my winter project and then I suppose I will never be able to stop making guitars. Brilliant.
Rock and Roll! As I say in the video - you don't need to spend a fortune...just get one good chisel instead of a set of crap ones, or wasting money on a whole set of expensive ones and choose your router cutters carefully...get the best bandsaw and router you can afford.
@@GuitarMaking I'm from India, and I'm building a double sided (bass+6string) as my first build for a design school project so this video helped me decide what tools to buy. Cheers dude, Ty for the quick response.
@@MrPotatoGamer Wow - that is amazing! My school would not let me build a guitar because they said it was too hard - been proving them wrong ever since! Good luck with your project - if you get stuck you know where we are...thanks for taking the time to leave a comment - much appreciated.
@@madswellejus OK Mads - I am featuring this comment YTODAY in my livestream - THANKS!!! I think I understand what you meant now (not at the time) - I will PM you !
Yes - but you only 'need' ONE cheap small one...That is how it starts, then you end up with a collection! Truthfully you can build a guitar without a plane...
This video is so informative and helpful, thank you so much for taking the time to make this! I do have a question for you, I've been looking for a bandsaw here in the UK but I'm struggling to find one that has the 4" height clearance, most seem to average at 80mm. Is there any bandsaw out there that would you would recommend without breaking the bank? Keep up the great work, love your channel dude!
Thanks for the encouragement Ken - Funnily enough I am working on a list of tools to recommend and spent most of yesterday comparing Bandsaws!...Since you have asked I'll add this (affiliate) link to my current fav in the description: amzn.to/2D676dS The Record Power BS9 has 92mm depth of cut - IMO it is the best bang for buck currently available. - if you search around you can get a pretty good deal. My advice is to get the biggest bandsaw you can afford as it will serve you well into the future but even the smallest with 76-80mm cut will do the job providing you have a decent blade. Happy Hunting!
So I've watched your videos and read your reviews and I'm really excited to do this. in your plans are there different style headstock for it or is it just the one?
Cheers Z...There are two headstocks included for guitars - one for six in line and one for 3 a side...if you are making a bass then you can design your own (I'll help)...

Good to see Kurt Corbain alive and with a great trade skill.
Lol dude looks nothing like Kurt Cobain
@@dannygillmusic He looks exactly like Kurt Cobain.... if Kurt had grown to be 50.

Just crusin RUclips and this video came up. Had to stop and give it a like and comment. Best guitar building videos out there. :)

What's the tool at 6:22 ?
It is called a Surform - there are two actually - one is a Half Round Surform...the other is a 1/2" Round Surform....cheers Spud!

Thank you for sharing. Think you should get a plane for the body. By the way, use a little salt when gluing. That really helps. Tx again!
A plane is certainly very handy but you can build a guitar without one and save some money...Salt?
Mark Bailey put a little salt on the glued sides then they will stay in place. 👍🏻

Never thought Willem Dafoe would teach me about guitar tools
Thought I got away with that...
So this is where Wilem Defoe has been all these years.
