For your first guitar I highly recommend using a pre-made fretboard. I don't think there is any shame in that - at least you know it will play in tune!
This one is Indian Rosewood - that's what I recommend for a beginner as it is relatively easy to work.
If you buy a pre-made fretboard from us, then this is how we did it. Most of the machines used here are way beyond the reach of your average home builder, but if you make a lot of guitars like I do, they are invaluable.

Just under a third of the way through and now I'm clapping.
Someone with a passion is always worth a watch ,no matter whats hes building
I'm watching a lot of guitar making vids and I will say, you've got a great tutorial! Calm and collected! Isn't RUclips great!
For multiscale guitars I make the fretboard in FreeCAD with the Marz guitar workbench, then convert it to an SVG and print it off inkscape. Then I line the fretboard with painters tape, and super glue the paper template onto the tape and they're ready to be cut.
Another router tip, don’t change bits with it plugged in! You don’t wanna accidentally flip it on whilst you’re fingers are touching the collet and sharp bit
yes mark is a great teacher!
I'm 52 seconds in and had a real eureka moment with that. Genius stuff, good sir! :)
Thanks J! ...check out my website if you get a chance :)
Great video, loved the little practical comments (e.g. when to turn the router off) that most builders omit. Cheers!
Great video! I truly appreciate your attention to safety as well as detail!
I'm an extremely experienced woodworker, but I've never made a guitar and am now thinking about it.
Well done, and thank you!
Great how to video, exactly what I was looking for, thank you.
Very useful tips. Thanks a lot.
Excellent Video!
Thanks for sharing your technique
This video is unreal. Thank you. Building the neck and especially the fretboard are the two fears holding me back from making my own guitar.
Man alive you do good work! Thanks
Great vídeo. Great advices. Congrats.
Calm, collected & a high focus on safety! Excellent video, subscribed!
Thanks !

Great teacher and woodsmith/luthier. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Gazza - much appreciated. Hope you get a chance to check out my website - over 400 videos on there now!
Very educational thank you.
Big Thanks Master. ^^
Mark, I'm seriously considering doing your course. It's the only information I've come accross that looks like everything I have been asking myself and not found the information, all my questions will be answered. The way you have structured the course is very much to my liking, I like your teaching style. You may well see me soon. Thanks again.
Cool! If you have any q's just ask :)
Awesome video with great instruction. This is the only video of yours I've seen, and now I plan to watch many more. Thanks man.
Thanks Nathan - that means a lot to me! Most of my videos are not on YT...I have well over 300 videos on my site - hope you get a chance to check it out: www.guitarmaking.co.uk
Mark Bailey Sounds great, I'll definitely check it out!
Belated comment, me too
you are a gifted teacher
Thanks! I just know everyone can do this...with a little knowledge...it is a real pleasure to be in the position to pass it on.
great guys
Brilliant video. After building a kit Telecaster I've been aching to do a scratch build but the thought of making a neck terrified me. This has removed a lot of the fear.
Go for it Neil! You just have to know what to to do, what order to do it in, and when to stop. That's where I come in :) Hope you get a chance to check out the courses (link in description) - it could save you a lot of time...
One of the best and relaxed explanations I have seen. Can you tell me, Is the fretting template available or did you make it yourself?
Subscribed when you got to the bandsaw safety tips :D
Cheers!
Thanks for the video. I love the slotting fixture with the guard built into it. But here is a tip for keeping the pencil marks from fading. Use a little shellac over the mark. It also helps to firm up the edges of the MDF templates.
Great tip - thanks Jason!
Thank you man
You're welcome - Thanks for watching glad you liked it!
I like your neck method ,gonna follow you for my neck build ,thank you !
Awesome! Cheers!
Ingenious.
Thankyou
thank you
YOUR VIDEOS ARE GREAT AND YOU BUILD RAELLY NICE GUITARS KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK
Cheers Eddie - I go into a lot more detail on my online courses...you can check them out here: www.guitarmaking.co.uk/
Great video, can you give me details of how to make the fretboard radius jig ?
Many thanks
Graeme
Love the safety tips on using power tools!!
Cheers - always count your fingers!
Thx for advice
Thank you so much man.
Glad to help - Thanks for watching!
Thanks very much.
Glad you liked it Colin!
Thank you very much !!!
My pleasure!
if you profiled with a hand plane what type would you recommend , not a fan or power tools. Also I want to avoid tear out , although i know this is down to technique and tool set up and sharpness and tool type. Please advise thanks..
Hi where do you get the blades from thanks
I build custom one-off guitars. In other words once one has been built that's it. There are no duplicates. Unfortunately necks freak me out so I'm still ordering Maple necks from China. But on my next build I'm going to reference this video and give it a shot.
Oh man, a simpler way to find the center is put your rule diagonally on the material until the measurement can be divided by 2. For example, tilt ruler until it reads say 4 inches. at 2 inches is your center. Other than that tidbit, great video.
Hi mate, this is a really great video, thank you. I wondered where you got your radius machine/jig? It's the best solution I've seen and would give me a great accurate compound radius. Thank you!
THANKS! The Radius Machine was made for me by one of my students - I can probably put you in touch with him if you email me (mark@guitarmaking.co.uk).
You are great!!! I love your hair!
Is there a video on your full course for making the jig you’re using on the table saw? I’ve bought a blade but curious as to how you measured for the correct depth of cut. Love your videos!
Not yet! Sorry...
I got the depth of cut through trial and error if that helps....
How's the plastic tool called?
To find center, just measure the width with digital calipers, divide by two, reset calipers and boom!
That is another great way to do it - thanks Brent!!
Hi Mark, where did you obtain your saw blade 0.023" kerf to cut frets and transparent fret position guide from? Thank you.
guitarmaking.co.uk/product/fret-slot-saw/
Hi, we’re did you get your blade for the saw to cut fretboard slots, thanks
Got my first one from Luthiers Mercantile International and my new one from Stewmac - the latter one is probably better but both are excellent. 👍
center finder ruler!
I've been wanting to know that on what measurements do we vary the width of the fretboard from nut to the bridge??
You can choose the width at the the nut if you make your own, but the bridge will likely be fixed width. You just need to measure it and then add 3-4 mm to each side to get the width at the bridge. Mark it at the ends like in the video and then join it up to get the outline of the fretboard - hope that makes sense.
And.. Thank you for the safety to on the bandsaw! Yea mate.. Can't believe how dangerously close some of these guys get!
love your videos are you still making new videos ?
Dude - Thanks for the encouragement! Yes - I have over 350 videos on my site (guitarmaking.co.uk) please check it out when you have a minute...videos here on youtube are just previews...
Great video. What thickness is the fretboard at the start, and is it already planed to this thickness from your shop?
Cheers Paul! About 6mm...
OK thanks!
How did you get the template so perfect?
+doggylv +doggylv It is not difficult - I explain how to make this and all my other patterns on my online course - please check it out!

Anyone got the plans for radius cradle? Would like to see how compound radius is set-up and done!!!
Here is an interesting version of fretboard radius jig from one of my students - enjoy! guitarmaking.co.uk/community/hints-tips/fretboard-radiusing/#post-709
Love the radius machine. Did you buy it or make it? I like this chanel, keep going. I'll have a look at your course.
Thanks for the encouragement! Long story short: The radius machine was made for me in the early days by one of the students on my course who happened to prototype machines for a living...I have had some pretty amazing students! I can put you in touch if you want one?
I am new to guitar building and I am just starting to get all of the tools I need. I have only made kit builds so far and I have caught the bug, now I want to make them from scratch. Your course looks very appealing especially if it is as easy to follow as the few videos you have on your RUclips chanel. I am interested in getting in touch with your friend about the radius machine but I feel I need to get other essential tools first. Band saw, router, circular saw etc.
Obviously I am biased but I do really believe that my course is the best possible start you could get and I'm sure it will save you time and money in the long run - not to mention heartache and pain if it goes wrong! (ask me how I know!) Don't take my word for it though - have a read through some of the reviews...hope to see you on the course - best of luck to you!
I would like to get in touch with the guy who made the radius machine. I'm tired of using a radiusing beam. See you do something in a few minutes what takes me hours of hard work made me really want one lol
Hi Archangel - It's a great machine - being used as I write! I can put you in touch with Dave the Hero who made mine but we are based in the UK. If you email me here I will pass on your request: mark@baileyguitars.co.uk
What type of wood did you use for the fret board?
This one is Indian Rosewood - that's what I recommend for a beginner as it is relatively easy to work - Thanks for the Q! I have added this info to the description :)
Great vid, thank you. what was the thickness of the fret saw blade?
My fretsaw blade is .024" - I recommend you buy your fretsaw from the same place as your fretwire - then at least you know it will fit...
Thanks for the info and reply :)
No Problem - sorry it took so long...I get a lot of messages currently....good luck with it! If you want a pemade fretboard here is the link: guitarmaking.co.uk/product/fretboard-premade-electric-guitar/
I need the same fret rig to cut my fret mark….
Hello sir what is the correct thickness of the fretboard?
Our fretboard blanks are 6 - 6.5mm (1/4") - after radiusing they come out approx 5.5mm at the thickest point. THANKS!! guitarmaking.co.uk/product/fretboard-electric-guitar/
How can i manage to calculate the frets position?
There is a very simple formula:
Scale Length divided by 17.817 = distance from nut take off point to F1
Scale Length - F1 / 17.817 +F1 = F2
Scale Length - F2 / 17.817 + F2 = F3
etc...
I made a video about it here but you have to sign up to see it:
guitarmaking.co.uk/lesson/mark-the-scale-length/
What to do if you don't have a router also for other parts of the guitar
Buy a router
Would I be able to make a bass guitar with your guide?
Yes - the method I use for laying out the design works for virtually any stringed instrument. Once you have a working drawing then you can work out what patterns you need and then the methods for building are identical. I am on hand to help out if you need it - If you have any q's just ask - Cheers!
Mark Bailey I'm just asking because of the extra pressure
The strings are fatter but there are less of them and less tension - so the pressure is not so different...This course covers set necks (glued in) but I also have a bolt on neck course I can give you access to (should you need it) if you sign up.
Can you say “ extremely detailed genius “? Not really though, he forgot to teach me how to transmit finger movement from my brain to my hand.....
:) Cheers !
Or you Just measure How wide it is and take half of it
Calm down buddy ur a little high strung for me
so not worth the risk
This video is named build your own guitar and the guy is making with machines cost thousands of dollars 💀
