I was hyped for this game too but when I saw recent gameplays I had the same impression. The infernals were my to go race initially but then after watching and realising that Zerg is giving that swarmy feeling was more satisfying and not to mention the slow paced, plain combat. One more thing that made me realise was “why the heck are we using swords in a sci-fi environment? I want to see orbital bombardments and big lasers and missiles going on!”

RTS is my favourite genre still play WC3 till this day, unfortunately my friend and I who are dying for a new rts are really skeptical of this game (he even bought the £200 kickstarter)
The most critical problems we've found is this is not a beta, this is an alpha.
A beta should really be something that should feel like an end product with missing features and understandably full of bugs.
This feels like an alpha, missing textures placeholders everywhere still haven't added in all the races units and tech, terrible unit control, a weird system where they automatically add your units to your control groups meaning you have to reassign them whenever you create new ones because it's adding any new unit to all your control groups (There is probably a setting for turning this off but I haven't looked, I hope there is), and just in general it doesn't feel very fun so atm my friend and I are huffing a lot of copeium but we're worried it's not going to turn out very good.
2 years of development and almost $40 million in investment.
I'm a programmer I understand that developing games is expensive, difficult and that throwing money at a project doesn't just make a project better, but this is a lot of money and time to create something that should be a lot more polished than this.
People complaining about the art that's completely subjective personally I don't mind what the game looks like, although I really have to agree with the "Lack of soul" doesn't feel like these units have been made by the same people who made all the races of the games we love, where every unit felt unique and had its own character.
But there is a real problem, path finding and AI.
They brag about network roll back code being amazing but unfortunately this isn't really something most players are going to feel.
The amount of times your units will just slide into each other and just get stuck not knowing how to path around your own units has made the experience really bad for my friend and I so far, this is the most important part about making an RTS game and it's been very neglected.
Also we both came to the same conclusion to us the game just feels bad.
couldn't even really put a finger on it exactly it just feels bad to play atm, hopefully it will get better with time and we will see another golden age of RTS games, but we both fear that if this game flops no one will try to revive this genre.

Yeah after 2 years and 40M invested you'd think the actual core of the game would be superb. Yet the game runs terrible, looks really meh, the netcode seems bad, the core gameplay is boring, the UI is TERRIBLE, a bunch of the voicelines are laughably amateur... I'm not impressed at all. ^ all of this, but I'm most shocked by how bad some of the design concept is. They took inspiration heavily from SC and WC3, but then it seems like they avoided most of the smart design decisions just so they're doing something unique.
The Vanguard are modeled after Terran, but all ranged and flying units suck in this game and the Vanguard particularly don't have good defensive options (Infernals have white health on Shroud, farms with auto-spawn pigs and a better defense tower - Vanguard get basically "Call to Arms", fucking lawl!), yet Vanguard macro is still designed to increment more slowly (Infernal Shrine is cheaper and builds faster). The Infernals are supposed to feel swarmy, but their basic unit is an Orc Grunt - and this is the highest DPS unit they have! (Other than the Flayed Dragon, a special singular unit.) Upgrades are mostly wonky and either useless (like the Gaunt's Reaper's Rush) or necessary but lame (like the Brute's Soulforge Ascendance).
Most of this is clearly the result of bad design philosophy, something that won't just get better with time.

To me this game is fun to play. Period. I know what you mean about the fights. I think they want it to be less unforgiving so that not looking at a fight for half a second doesn't lose you the game and that has a consequence of less breath taking fights. To the contrary of what you said, this CAN be fixed by changing the overall damage to health ratio and speed of units. They're going to make units and things similar to other RTS games so that people can transfer their style of play over and feel somewhat familiar. It is still a completely different game than SC2, if you play a 15-20 minute game (which it honestly sounds like you haven't. And a lot of people haven't because nobody is that good yet) you'll quickly see the potential and have some exciting fights.
PS A lot of people are saying it feels slow. I think thats because they made it easier to macro which in theory gives you more opportunity to micro and look at fights. You definitely dont have to constantly hit buttons in the early game. Lol

"Clunky" - 100%, the sloppiness of pathing really surprised me, especially since that's one of the first things they came out promoting about the game. The pathing is bad, particularly for melee units arcing out to find an attack position. I've seen a few units get stuck in walls - I've seen amateur GameMaker tutorials with cleaner pathing than this.
The Vangaurd are conceptualized like Terran, slower/more expensive macro, but they don't have good ranged units so you can't really play the Vanguard defensively. That plus the larger HP values and lower DPS means you can't really use building positioning defensively, at least not to the level of fidelity possible in StarCraft (either one).
The Infernals seemed like they were supposed to have a swarm-like style, but they feel more like Orcs because of the clumsy melee starting unit. The Gaunt does virtually no damage, the Brute actually has more DPS (particularly counting the second Fiend phase) than ANY other Infernal unit. The farms with their pigs are a cheap attempt at making macro matter defensively, but it's just flat and uninteresting
There are just some really surprisingly bad design decision, polish notwithstanding. I really hope they make radical changes. It is certainly aimed in a flop direction right now IMO.

Except the new type of units, I can't see a reason why someone would play that game and not Starcraft 2. Even worse, I don't see a reason why thats a whole new game and not a sc2 mod. Where they seems lost to me its the fantasy - there is no fantasy in this game. One of their main designer said they are aiming to have a space marine being able to punch a dragon, but honestly, thats boring. Sad situation really. The game that feels way more interesting ZeroSpace, fails in the base building idea and thats that. RTS could massively fail rather than reignite with these two. Sadly.

The way I see it, a lot of your points boil down to a 2 things: 1. You are comparing a beta unfinished product to games that are either excused from these issues from being old or have had years to polish themselves. Yes, the sound design could use work, as could visual clarity, ui, ect. Thats why its a beta, all that stuff is at the end of the development pipeline, so harping on it as a deal breaker makes no sense for a beta. You need to remember the purpose of the beta, its not here to sell you on a finished product, its here to showcase the ideas and concepts that the game has, test their engine with a large number of players and get player feedback on what does and does not work.
    2. You, by your own admission being a veteran of the genre talking about onboarding and the game not feeling any easier than other rts, and then you go and harp on mechanics that are deliberatly designed the way they are to make it easier for players to get into the game. (also, its very clear that this game is not in the sub genre of rts that you like - there was a clear pattern in the games that you mentioned, and stormgate does not fall within that pattern)
Visual clarity - I take a lot of issue with this, each unit is very distinct - tanky units and bigger and burlier, back line units are appropriately small and nimble, each unit has a distinct outline where you can tell what it is from its silhouette (which you cant even say for sc2 - could you at a glance differentiate between big, burly firebat, and big burly marauder?), and no units role feels contradictory to its shape language. Furthermore, for a game with a lot of artillery, there were no gotcha moments (ie. oh, you walked into a sieged up line of tanks and looked away for 2 seconds, and now all your units are dead). Each artillery was clear in its firing, and even if not completely dodgeable, the damage could be mitigated with good reaction time, unlike say tanks. And again, as a new player, this is amazing, rts tend to have a lot of gotcha mechanics that you are expected to just die to many times before understanding what to do, and stormgate avoids that frustration.
Time to kill - This is another very deliberate choice. Slowing the pace of the game down does a lot to help new players - if your units engage each other, and either side will die in 1 second, then if you dont know who will win the fight before it starts, you have no chance to react and pull back. If instead it would take either side 5 seconds to die, then you have time to assess the fight, and retreat if possible. And the funbny thing is that Stormgate isnt even that slow! Ignoring WC3 which is even slower time to kill, ive played and modded a lot of DoW and DoW2, and with few exceptions, the time to kill can be anywhere from 15 seconds to minutes for larger units. You may have a valid point of criticism somewhere here, but you are barking up the wrong tree if you think that melee tanky units taking some time to kill each other is an issue.
UI, Specifically in reference to the QWERT menus - If its so easy that SC2 could do it, then why havent most rts in the last 10 years not done it? Why is it taking this new wave of rts to try something like this? Because its not that easy, either technologically or from a design perspective. And this comes back again to the new player experience - do you know whats the biggest hurdle for new rts players? Learning to multitask. Guess what this ui does? Make multitasking a lot easier. I was always someone who hated terran style production, and stormgate made it feel good. It feels like a can get way more done with fewer apm, and its both easier and more convenient to macro and micro similtaneously. The players who will feel the least effect from this are the veterans who have hotkey setups and mental trigger/timing checks built into their subconcious.
To conclude, I am really struggling to find valid points of critisism in the video. If you want this to reach the developers, please find a way to convey your points more clearly, as right now I am having a lot of trouble parsing any reasonable or actionable critique.

@@ggzii Then you dont know jack shit about game development or what a beta is. Let me remind you that a beta is NOT a demo of a mostly finished product. In software development, a beta is defined simply by being feature complete - meaning no major new features will be added. In the context of a game, it simply means that no new core mechanics will be added. Baldurs gate 3, hades, subnautica, and many many others are all games that released in their beta stage of development, but had massive visual, audio and game feel overhauls before their full release. Hence why I had trouble understanding your critique, and you confirmed my suspicions by compltetely misunderstanding what a beta is and what the function of an open beta or early access release is.
If you want to be taken seriously, please at least do a little bit of research on the topic you are discussing.

39 seconds into the game and i already dont like the game just by that.
like for real... the main menu... the graphics... the buttons and design shapes and all that, why on earth does it look like a freaking mobile phone game?? i dont know man, without going into any specifics and issues i have but
i already dislike 90% of what the game does visual and design wise. it looks so awful.
and this comes from a person who plays sc2 on lowest settings, not only that but since i play on my office laptop a lot, i even play sc2 on 720p so it runs a tad better... and i still prefer that look over this.
i honestly think, they might have killed their own game with this. yes its an alpha beta whatever... but it should be a representation of the game. it should make me want to watch it and feel: ''damn i want to play this'' , i seriously dont want to play this.
and games roll with the hype. everyone is hyped, everyone wants a new rts... and then you see THIS?
the only thing watching stormgate makes me feel is: ''i want to hop on bnet and play some starcraft''
and here is a point: you dont need to know whats going on to understand whats going on. its the same with other games like starcraft or warcraft or fighting games like tekken for example. even if you dont play them and you have no clue whats going on, you can still watch them and understand whats happening and who is winning. its like watching soccer. you dont have to know the rules or play soccer to understand it.
on stormgate... i dont even understand what i am looking at.
just donnie vermillion has more charm than stormgate

You seem upset that this game isn't SC2, so play SC2. This game is far from perfect, and some of your criticisms are on point, but many fall flat. If you don't like the sword guys, tech early and rush mech, the first tier mech unit can kite ogres. There's a lot of gaps in your knowledge, which is fine, its a new game, but your assumption is you have the game figured out, which you clearly don't. What is fun about this game so far, is it is remarkably well balanced in the early game, SC2 had a long road before cheeses could be countered.

I completely agree. The mistake was calling this a "beta" when the 3rd faction doesn't even exist yet. This is an "Early Alpha" public release.
I'm constantly clicking "Not interested" in all the Stormgate content suggestions on my RUclips, as I have no interest playing a WarCraft/Fantasy RTS.
When the 3rd faction is out, I'll have another look, as I will again when out of beta, but my expectations are low. In the meantime, I'm so glad we still have SC2.
Also related to the blandness are the names of things, BOB, Scout: -Paw Patrol RTS.
In trying to please everyone, it may end up satisfying no one (at least no one who takes RTS seriously).

However, I haven't played Stormgate; it just looks very LoL. There needs to be some new and exciting feature that hasn't been done before to compete with StarCraft. Maybe tier 3 units will make it better, but yeah, units with swords that stab just isn't exciting. I miss that old gritty dark feeling from Brood War. The music, the sounds. They need to get rid of the camp stuff imo.

    RTS gamers are spoiled brats.
"I want a new RTS!" we cry.
Stormgate gives us a good one, and we respond "Not this one. I want [Starcraft/AoE/SupCom]"
Don't think I don't agree with your take here. I believe the same about Stormgate. But I also think that Stormgate is a competent game that just so happens to exist in a genre dominated by 4 exceptional games that have unnatural longevity. If you put a game of similar execution to Stormgate in FPS, FGC, or any other competitive genre, you'd probably end up with a pretty dedicated, bu small community and it would be OK!
I think Stormgate will fail not entirely on its own merits, but on the comparison to our genre's Giants. We're just that spoiled.

  • @Mark986270
    @Mark986270 8 месяцев назад

I think we're all criticising because we care, it has potential, more than most. And although we aren't game designers, we can tell when something feels off. And that alone useful feedback.
    So here:
It doesnt feel exciting to watch a massive helldemon throw a massive ball of flame at a tiny unit, just to see it barely register
I cant tell from the map that one player has a tactical advantage over another.
I can't tell if a player is outplaying another during a battle, or whether they just have more units.
The early game doesn't seem perilous, even if an attack force gets to an enemy base. It doesn't seem to be a threat.
I don't care if a units die. I can't empathise with them. The zerg were a species just trying to survive, the terrans were average joes just trying to get by, and the protoss were just trying to protect one another, either way, their deaths meant something. I dont care if a mech punches a dragon.
