I love fernet. If you haven't tried it, it's like a better version of Jagermeister, and I love Jagermeister. Rich, lots of herb flavor, and a little spicy. The licorice/anise taste is very mild.

I suppose that's why they're featured so often on the Chef's Night Out-series. As for hipsters drinking them, I wouldn't really know. The only two guys I know of who regularly drink Fernet Branca are two black metal musicians who are as far from a hipster as anyone could get without going into outer space in a rocket. Looks-wise as well as sensibilities-wise, some intense scarred misanthropes those two. They drink it mainly during recording sessions or as a hangover cure though.
That's where I first heard of Fernet Branca, in Fergus Hendersons cookbook as part of a hangover cure cocktail. It is definitely a liquer preferred by hipster chefs it seems! Not as ubiquitous a beverage as PBR however!
