Penn is a total dork for this. Kreskin is a legend and a pioneer, and always billed himself as an entertainer. He’s not responsible for your childhood foibles. I can’t imagine being in Penn’s position and still being, in so many ways, a sack of shit. Kreskin is one of a kind.

I know. I love their magic, but as a person Penn is a bellicose jerk.

I'm 72 , I remember watching Kreskin with Carson many times when I was in highschool , I was totally fascinated with Kreskins showmanship . I also remember Johnny debunking Uri . Penn of all people should understand it's not the trick , it's the performance .

I remember seeing Kreskin on Carson. Carson seemed to enjoy having him as a guest, had him on several times. Carson also practiced as a magician.

I remember Kreskin doing the crystal card watch on Johnny Carson. I find it amazing that Penn is a juggler and he is known as a magician. And he doesn't like magic because he says it is trickery. Some stupid people say stupid things. Magic is a science and a craft, and in Theater (performed in front of a live audience in Theater, not on TV) it is Theater. As a magician, wizard or showman, the idea is to use both science and craft to do an entertainment, that the audience sees that in the mind of the audience, that there is no other way to explain it, other than magic. The magic only happens in the "mind" of the audience. Without the audience, and performing to an empty theater it is only practicing a science and a craft. Theater is not a lie. Theater is not fake, Theater is Theater and has been around probably for as long as magic has. I saw Penn and Teller live on stage in Las Vegas a few years ago. I have seen many magic shows and I grew up in a show business family. Penn and Teller's show was the worst show I have ever seen.

When I interviewed Kreskin we just messed with him the whole time throwing off any game he thought he had. When you lie to liars, you win. He even tried to brag about his finding the paycheck trick. I instantly recognized it as the same hustle we used to do as teens for cigarettes called, "I can smell what card you touched while standing in the other room." But who knows, maybe in his heyday he would have conned circles around us. Either way, he hated our podcast forsure!

It's funny that Gillette mentions the Dunninger book as exposing Kreskin, since Dunninger was a mentalist too and he made many of the same claims about himself that Kreskin did. Yet Kreskin is blamed and Dunninger is not! Why is that?

  • @AmazingArends

I think Gillette is lying about the Dunninger book because Dunninger wrote a book about stage magic and illusions, not the type of things that Kreskin did. Dunninger did write a book called Dunninger's Secrets, but that came out when Gillette was around 18, not 12 years old.

Dunninger was a well known magician and mentalist. He absolutely did the things Kreskin did. He wrote many books, including several on hypnotism, psychic investigations, and (so-called) thought reading.

Hey l like the vid and all but Kreskin was born in Jersey so def not Canadian, not that there is anything wrong with that ;>/
For whatever reason, people confuse Doug Henning (who was Candian) and Kreskin although they looked nothing alike nor had similar acts. Kreskin was on Carson over 50 times so don’t know that Carson “hated” Kreskin unless maybe they later had a falling out of some kind. (Carson himself was an amateur magician). He was also THE King of night time during his period so if he didn't like someone then he just didn't book them. However, Carson did have a dislike of prop comics such as Gallagher who might get booked but only when Johnny had a guest host. I think he tolerated prop comics... but again, he didn't have to give anyone a booking. Check out his vid here on RUclips where he masterfully trolled Uri Geller (using some recommendations given to him by James Randi).

Penn, why were you so easily swayed by this "magic book"? Why would you just throw away your belief just because some "other" person says so? If someone says "your magic sucks" , do you just believe them?

All credibility out the window. He appeared 88 times on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Carson was the one who dubbed him "Amazing".
