    ❤✌ The beaches will reopen in August! Get ready for 11 miles of pure Plum Island beach adventuring!✌
    Today's shell adventure - it's getting steamy in New England so we are up for sunrise to beat the summer heat! It's 74 degrees at 5AM and we are ready for low tide. You have to get up pretty early on Plum Island in the summer to beat the heat, the bugs and the competition! When we arrived there was an amazing sunrise and a decent wrack line with some surprisingly different shells! Today we searched in a little sand and waded in the water with some crabs and mussel beds! In addition to the amazing shells, the water was a decent temperature in the high 50's! **LOVE**. Today's favorites scores include a some soft shell clamshells, Basket Whelks, Limpets, Dog Whelks and mini moons! Thank you for watching and subscribing! Subscribing lets me know you like the content I'm creating and it keeps me coming back!

    ❤✌ Visiting Plum Island Massachusetts ❤✌
    Most IMPORTANT thing 1st: All of the really great shells I find in my videos are inside the Parker River Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is closing 99.9% of the beaches from April 1st 2022 to August 2022 in an effort to protect the Piping Plover nests. Piping Plovers are endangered and the beaches are closed in an effort to help raise the plover population. When the beaches close, there is no beach access. The 1st gate will remain open, but it's not good for shelling. At the very end of the refuge (after gate 7) there are the Bar Head Rocks (featured in this video). Those rocks are located on Sandy Point reservation (which is Ipswich Ma and not part of the Parker River Wildlife Refuge.) That section will remain open! It's VERY good for shelling.
    If you want the full Plum Island experience (all 11 miles of beach) - late August, September, October, November and December are great months. The off season is best because during the summer the island is very congested.
    The spring is ok, but the weather can be very unpredictable as you can see from watching my videos.
    Green Heads: We also have Green head flies that start swarming early July through August. They love the beach and they bite. They are like mosquitos on steroids.
    Where to Shell: The Parker River Wildlife Refuge Gates 5 to Bars Head is amazing for shelling.
    It's always best to contact the refuge before booking any trips if you are coming specifically for shelling and the beaches. This way you are sure the gate to the lower lots will be open along with the beaches.
    The website: www.fws.gov/re...
    Where to stay: There are Air BNB's all over the island, but The Blue Inn is SPECTACULAR. Right on the ocean - I am a huge fan. Newburyport is right over the bridge and it's perfect for New England Charm. Tons of restaurants, Inns and Air BNB's.
    Where to Eat: There are several restaurants on the island, to name a few of my favorites: The Beachcomber, The Plum Island Grill, Bob Lobster, Georgie Porgies.
    Newburyport: Sea Level is my absolute favorite! As well as The Park Lunch.
    Other Activities: Plum Island Kayak, Newburyport Whale Watches, Fishing Charters, Surfing, Sailboat Tours - so much fun!
    ...And if you see me on the beach, be sure to flag me down and say hello!

      Yes - It was a bit mosquito-y on the hike out, but worth it! I had no idea blue mussels could be striped like that! I want to go back and spend more time digging through the shell piles in the water. I feel like I may be able to find a Neptune there! Maybe?

    I'm going to make a guess here, blue is your favorite color? Sea blue and turquoise and cornflower blue are my favorite blues. Since I majored in art it is hard to have a favorite color, I'm flighty about colors. I like the blue mussel with the striped pattern on it and the pink and gold moon snail. Both very pretty. That operculum looks like a "baby's ear shell" and I love that it is like glass that light can pass through it. Great walk!

    • @PlumIslandSeaCabin
      @PlumIslandSeaCabin  2 года назад

      That is a fantastic guess Chris! 😂🌊✌ Blue is 100% my most favorite color ever! I need to google cornflower blue! I have never heard of that color before! Yes - those amber operculum's are my favorite. I love holding them up to the sun. Moon snails have the best operculum's because they are so translucent. Others I have seen are brown and/ or black and very thick. Thanks for coming on my beach walk with me!
