Little correction 51:12. That sequence wasnt directed by bahi. Soty was AD here and the baords where drawn by maenami. Julian is a fantastic animator, looking forward what he'll do in the future

Thanks for the correction! So I'm guessing Bahi's segment in the B part ends right after his wall running cut? I thought he boarded the few cuts afterwards as well, including your scene. That's exceptional work by Maenami, especially for his debut.
If possible, could you let us know which cuts were Julian's exactly? I've always been curious about his cuts for this ep and Tanaka's CSM ep.

The curious side of my brain will always wonder what even an average schedule would've done for this ep... It's gotta be one of the biggest what-ifs in my brain animation catalogue.
It's strange, but also sad, what kind of results a desperate schedule can bring. To think a lot of these animators/staff just wouldn't have been here if not for the dire conditions that needed emergency assistance. Like you said with Go's appearance, we could've straight up not gotten Vincent in this ep...

I think the floating buildings are actually just falling buildings, but because Sukuna and Mahoraga are fast mfs and it's from their pov, it makes the buildings seem like they are falling in slow motion (I think, this wasn't in the manga)
90% of the stuff in this fight in the anime is not in the manga, the manga was like less then 10 pages
The ep 17 corrections make it essentially an extra episode, which is an incredible display of the animators talents and tenacity to complete their vision, it was incredible. I look forward to seeing them cook for S3.
To answer your building question:
They aren't floating, they're falling. Sukuna and mahoraga are ping ponging all throughout shibuya, leaving destruction behind them. What you're seeing is them having moved so fast that the aftermath of the earlier scenes, which had building being sliced into pieces and flung in the air, still happening even though they're in a completely different area already.

While weilin's sequence is bonkers,the animator who impressed me the most is julian bentley, the background animation in his cuts is geniunely ejaculation worthy

I think the buildings floating in the air are the artists way of depicting just how fast these two are engaging.
I never imagined such a long video could be so entertaining. The amount of effort by all of the animators is just crazy work. My eyes are salivating by the sight of Shibuya as drawn and animated in most every scene. It's so insanely cool to see the step by step and every style used by all of the animators. Even switching between animators and their different animating styles is just so perfect and mesmerizing. Such an amazing fight!

This was an episode for the ages, so obviously it deserves an analysis for the ages from Mankoman!
I love the amount of passion the animators had for this season, going back and adding scenes or correcting scene just show it
Also another cool thing to note was how well Weilin's sequence conveys Sukuna as a character.
Sukuna is delighted at the end when Mahorage finally learns how to feint because he has taught the "Divine General" a "lie" through making him feint.

weilin's cut at 35:20 where sukuna dances around mahoraga reminded me a lot of his cut in the hades animated trailer where zagreus dodges and weaves as he fights against the bone hydra. just the perspective and the fluidity in the animation, it's so impressive
With what I'm hearing of how last minute and urgent this episode was, imagine how fire season 3 would be with a good schedule

My personal theory for floating buildings is that they’re both just so incredibly fast that the buildings look almost still.
yeah my best guess as well. we can see at the end of the episode when Sukuna drops off Megumi with Ieri and Yaga he's moving so fast it looks like he's teleporting (as far as we know the only character who can actually teleport is Gojo). but it's still confusing bc during the fight they affect the environment in real time so idk the physics of this lol.

38:23 I think the reason why they kept the floating buildings is to show how fast they are moving. The fight is moving so fast that the buildings haven't even had time to fall back down after Sukuna sliced them.

How episode 16 and 17 were made can be compared to Captain america vs thanos being episode 16 with Miso being Captain america and Thanos being Otsuka having his weapon of deadline and getting his ass beaten by Miso and then he's extremely tired and then portal scene happens which is episode 17. Miso standing alone and hakuyu go appears to help him and then evryone comes one after the another. (Vincent chansard is the 60ft tall ant man) 😂😂😂😂

What if studios now after seeing the success of the jjk blu-ray make animators add extra scenes to other blu rays?
Will this ever happen? Probably not but hey, chances aren't zero.
It's strange what brings out human greatness. I couldn't tell you the secret sauce, but I can say that we've gone VERY far away from it, conceptually, as a species. But occasionally, human greatness is achieved due to nothing more than the endless effort of a handful of people. It's too bad we can't get too much of that on a more grand human scale, but I'll take what we can get. Beautiful stuff.
Regardless, a fragment of that truth is discovered by understanding the chaos of chance. I am fairly convinced that this would NOT have happened if they had more time. It's really when human ingenuity is taken to its logical extremes, that you can get this kind of thing, like a flower sprouting in a sidewalk against all odds. It's somewhat dizzying to consider, that these moments are created from whole cloth and not planned. But I'm glad they happen.
In a way, it proves that all we can do is throw ourselves to chance and hope.
This episode blew me away the first time I saw it, then sucked me back in with the blu-ray. This episode made me want to learn how to animate.

at 27:37 I think it's more likely that Maho was trying to throw his hand when Sukuna cuts it, as mentioned in the Weilin storyboard (and repeated two other times in the fight). It wasn't very clearly shown, but it is possible bc u can see Sukuna getting punched in the face when you go frame by frame. And coincidentally the next time Maho does the arm swing Sukuna cuts his head instead of arm.
