This 66-minute video lesson explores an in-depth look at “Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum”, the first piece from the six-piece suite, Children’s Corner, L.113, by Claude Debussy. Composed between 1906-1908, Children’s Corner is dedicated to Debussy’s daughter, Claude-Emma (nicknamed “Chou-Chou”) with the inscription “To my dear little Chou-Chou, with tender apologies from her father for what follows.” Areas of focus in this tutorial include a discussion about tempo, how to move more efficiently and effectively at the keyboard to help increase fluidity and reduce tension, how to gain better finger independence, pedaling suggestions, how to develop a lighter touch, ideas for voicing and dynamic contrast, how to vary the expression on repeated material, tips for effective fingering, tips for more effective articulation, how to create long, singing lines and breathing at the end of phrases, how to develop a better sense of rubato, and many other strategies and tips to help you become as efficient as possible in your practice sessions.
At 7:21-7:24, in case it wasn't obvious while looking at your score, I misspoke. When I said "1245" I meant "1254". This is in reference to the two descending notes, which should be played 5-4, not 4-5.

For many of us the Children's Corner Suite was our first taste of Debussy. Then it was The Engulfed Cathedral and the other Preludes. But Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum still holds s a very warm place in my heart and playing it allows me to return to my youth for a moment or two.
Played this piece in Covid! Was a huge cause in my change in mental state from down all the time to finding something to be positive about
May I know if you will show how to use the pedal for all the pages in your full video?
This is one of my favorite pieces by Debussy! Great tutorial, Josh! ❤🎹🙋🏽♀️💫
I love Debussy Children Corner Book. All the pieces are fun to play. Arabasque 1 and Gollywog Cakewalk are the my two favorites. Unfortunately, I've come across many comments of piano teachers and others refusing to teach it or play it for it's racist implications. It is very unfortunate, as there is a lack of understanding about the beloved European dolls and lack of animosity against black. It seems people in the US have a very skew and narrow understanding about Slavary and blacks in Europe and many other countries.
Love Children's Corner Suite! Sad that Gollywog's Cakewalk isn't really taught anymore. I do offer it still to students if they're interested.
Wow Im glad this video came up I love this piece. Can you do one on Hexentanz from macdowell page 1 and 2

As a video request, I know you talk about logan most of the time. Can you explain what songs he’s taught you as a student? Just about any life skill that maybe other musicians could learn about from logan.
This is called Children’s Corner- is this for 22 year old kids that have been playing for 24 years?😅😅
It's not written literally for children to play; it's for advanced, presumably adult players, but is meant to describe childhood.
