This is my favourite Leica lens, and along with the 75mm F2 APO-Summicron, the only one that I bought new about 15 years ago. Mine came with a Leica 21mm EXT finder which has a lever that locks it on to the hot shoe. Still it pays to be careful with them. The optical performance of this lens is something else, and perhaps it even exceeds that of my 21mm Zeiss Biogon G2 lens.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

Nice! Yes it would have been nice to shoot it next to my 21 Biogon ZM. I feel the Zeiss has the edge for my B&W but technically the Leica might be more corrected.

These were originally £1,900! I got a mint one in Nikon F for £440, so a good option if you shoot mirrorless and want a cheap, very, very high quality 21mm.

I run a 21mm Voigtlander f/3.5 II on a Leica M5. Due to the stem-mounted meter sensor in the camera I don't seem to get good metering with this lens. I think the back of the lens bends the metering sensor post backwards. So I just use my iPhone meter.
21 & 24mm lenses are my favorite wides on a 35mm camera. I am using a TTArtisan accessory viewfinder. I find it a good value, but if you have the money for a brightline viewfinder versus an accessory full-frame viewfinder I would buy it.
The other thing I have noticed is that even with the old Voigtlander 21mm brightline viewfinder, and being right-eye dominant, is that I almost always have my pics lean left. This never happens while using the M5 viewfinder for 35mm and longer lenses.
That being said, wide is my bag. I rarely shoot longer than 35mm for my environmental pics on full-frame 35mm film or digi-pics.
    Thanks for your excellent content.

21MM with a minimum focus distance of 70CM = 70% useless. One of the great things about wide angle lenses is the ability to emphasize the foreground, and create a strong sense of depth in a photo. As of 7/14/23, utilizing native Leica lenses, this technique and style of photo is not possible for the M shooter. While I love the rendering of my 28MM Summilux it never gets used due to the 70CM limit; however; the new 35MM Summilux never gets detached from the M11. I love to shoot street with the M system, alot of fun and rewarding, but the M is a crippled system where great photos can be had despiste antiqated system and lens designs, not beacusre of..

I am a fan of wide-angle focal-lengths wider than 28mm; I have found that vast majority of my photos have been shot with 20mm -24mm settings on my lens. However I have this belief right or wrong that wide-angle lenses show off their characteristics better on print sizes of at least A2 size or larger. Matt I am a 49 year old man from London, I learnt analog photography from age 16, used to process my own 35mm B&W films and make prints using a enlarger. So it won't be any surprise to you that my ideal camera would be a Nikon F3T with a digital back and a 36 MP sensor. To me the most important criteria for a camera is that it must be built using metal/s, hence why I hate amateur cameras with their plastic bodies. And modern cameras are so over-saturated with features and so many buttons to the point where one can be overwhelmed. But I am certain that Neither Cannon or Nikon will ever manufacture a professional grade Mirrorless that is almost a carbon copy of the F3T with 90% less features than a Z8, no auto-focus, but with a Magnesium alloy body, and brass top and bottom plates. Anyhow I don't expect you to reply to this, bye.

Thanks for checking out the video! I'm a 45 year old man from London :) I too like metal cameras so I use older Nikon film cameras (FM2, FE2, F4, F5 and others) but mostly Leica, all the film models and the simple metal digital ones too. If you want a simple metal digital camera I think everyone would agree that a Leica is the only option. Look at a used SL (24MP) and they are cheaper than new Canon and Nikon models. (SL2 is 47MP.. I know you said 36MP, but they cost more). ..I still need to get a F3T at some point!
