- This week we test out the brand new fujifilm 20-35mm lens for landscape photography. We have been waiting for a wide angle lens for the Fujifilm GFX system for some time and now we finally have it with the 20-35mm.
This lens will be a fantastic addition to the GFX medium format lineup of lenses and i look forward to including it in my kit. Out on field with this lens i try using it in open landscape where the 20-35mm focal range really makes all the difference to the field of view we can now capture with medium format.

Great video. The beautiful landscapes in your video further inspire me. I can't wait to finally purchase the GFX 100 II along with the 20-35 mm lens.
Thanks so much you will love it 😁✌️
1:05 to 1:26 is phenomenal! Pure art!
Thank you 😊✌️
What an epic scenario Paul, great images you've taken!
Thanks so much buddy appreciate it 😊✌️
Thanks a lot for this review Paul! I was sure that Fujifilm was going to make another great piece of optical engineering. Your review just reconfirms that Fuji does state-of-art job when it comes to optics. As for your shots, I can but join the best comments in this stack. I loved your framing! Nothing superfluous in the the frame and nothing missing too! The work of an artist with a fine sense for everything that turns tech work into a piece of art! My thanks and congratulations!
Thank you so much for your kind words and glad you enjoyed it 😊✌️
Nice video. I’ve got this lens waiting for me back in the UK. Looking forward to using it once I’m back.
It’s an awesome lens you will love it 😁✌️
That was great! The best review is showing images like that - and they are exactly what I hoped for. Thanks a lot Paul 😁 What a beautiful area with the heather, by the way...
Thanks so much Alex glad you enjoyed it 😊✌️
Nice too see more gf lenses being released. This would be my natural choice for my first lens. I’m surprised there is not more glass on that lens
Really beautiful colors, and very very sharp images ... thanks !!!
Thank you 😊✌️
Definitely seems worthy of a spot in your bag! Great images, Paul!
Thanks so much 😊✌️
1:13 OMG!!! Thanks for the video
Great images chap. The cloud action is superb. Really enjoyed this video even though i dont have Fuji kit. Nice one.
Thanks buddy 😁✌️
Great video Paul, I have the 20-35, 45-100, and the 100-200 which seems to cover the landscape as I see it and works well for me. I use both the 20-35 and the 45-100 about the same amount...
Gorgeous images with great explanation.
Thanks Juanita 😊✌️
Great little vlog fella! Really like that longer exposure utilising them clouds moving
Thanks buddy 😊✌️
Nice video Paul , looks like a great lens for the gfx , all nice shots but especially that last pano
Thanks buddy 😊✌️
Thank you for the images. The 20-35mm is super interesting, and I'm guessing it will be in my bag soon seeing images like that.
Thanks so much buddy 😊✌️🙌🏻
I really liked the 20mm shot of the two shot composite including the clouds streaking, bright center and foreground rocks along with the wall. Very dramatic I thought.
Thanks so much Steven 😊✌️
Thanks for this. I see you used a 16:9 crop factor on the wall image. Is that correct?
Excellent video comparing the 2 wide angle choices.
Thanks buddy 😊✌️
Excellent video. Thank you,
Thanks Carlos 😊✌️
Hi, Paul. I like the second image better with the forrground rocks. To get this perspective is why I like my 17-70 so much on my Sony ff. Cheers mate
Cheers David 😊✌️
Great review - mines been on back order for 2 weeks at WIX
Thanks Michael hope you get it soon ✌️
Terrific video, Paul. Like your vibe and approach. Just subscribed. Unlike many videos, felt like I was behind the camera - thus, I learned. Also love the beautiful music. Can you tell us what the pieces are? Thanks!
Thanks Jeffrey will have to go back and have a look as I get all my music from epedemic sound 😁✌️
Very nice view at 9:30.
Thank you for the video. Looks like a nice lens. Already preordered one. Looks like I'll be selling the 23mm.
Thanks man yeah definitely not worth keeping as this will do everything you need 😀✌️
Been waiting to see this out in the wild and you did an excellent job showcasing it Paul. I use Laowa's 17mm for ultra wide at the moment but that has some quirks you need to work around. A question if I may, how is it in terms of sharpness compared to the 23, especially in the corners?
Thanks Izzy as far as I could tell on my images it was sharp corner to corner no issues that I can see 😀👍
Great images Paul. I would love to use the GFX range and this new lens looks pretty awesome but is somewhat out of my price bracket unfortunately.
Yes Ivan it’s definitely somewhat of an investment for sure and will be a good while before I can afford to add it to my kit 😊✌️
Excellent video and beautiful shots. Thank you, I plan on getting the 20-35!
Is the shot at 12:50 a pano stitch?
Thanks so much no they are all single shots 😊✌️
Thanks for the video, looks great. And where did you get that eye piece?
Many thanks
The code is EC-GFX direct from Fujifilm
Great review - can’t wait to get my hands on a copy - can I please ask what L bracket you have, finding it tricky to get a decent one, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it mine is the Kirk enterprises l bracket 😊✌️
looks like a beautiful lens! The only thing holding me back from jumping to a GFX is the inability to cover the 11-16mm side and 150 - 400mm telephoto options that I can currently get on the 5DSR. I shoot so much at 300mm+ that I'm really concerned I'd miss those focal lengths. Great review and beautiful pano of the mountains!
250mm with 1.4xTC gets you to 300mm FF. And you have enough MPs to crop. Super wide side, probably will never happen.
you can take two shots and stitch them together with a single click. what you said makes no sense.
@@user-yp6in8nl9z try that at the ocean with waves... good luck keeping that to a single click. And, still no option of 150mm plus natively. I even picked up a GFX though, so just living with the limitations
Great review, great landscapes! What is your technique to avoid the need of focus bracketing? (some other photographers make the case that because of the narrow depth of field, focus bracketing is necessary in medium format landscape photography)
Thanks so much to be honest I don’t have any more depth of field issues than I had on full frame. On medium format I find as long as you stop down your aperture to f16 instead of around f11 on full frame it is always about where it should be. As with any photography this depends on how close you are to the imediate foreground.
Cheers
Paul
@@PaulthomsonphotographyUk Paul, thanks for sharing. Good to hear that f16 does the job. Encouraged by your experience i am considering getting the 20-35mm. Cheers, John
really nice picture´s !! ;-)
Thanks so much 😊✌️
I knew I should have waited for the 20-35mm... O well the 23mm is going to have to do, I just bought the Sigma 85 Art lens Nikon F mount and its killer on the GFX with the Steelsring NK/GFX II Adapter
For sure I think there are going to be a lot of 23mm lenses available soon . As long as you have the ranges you need that’s all that matters. Cheers George 😊✌️
Paul, what Fuji lens do you use the most for your landscape?
Hi Dennis probably the 35-70mm followed by the 100-200mm
Thanks Paul@@PaulthomsonphotographyUk
You have 82mm Kase filter on this GF 20-35 lens. Is there any vignetting on 20mm, when you use ND filter or 2 filters together /ND + polarising filters/?
When lens has 82 filter size people usually use one step bigger filters, in this case 95mm filters beacause of vignetting...
Hi no it’s one of the things I tested straight away and could not see any vignetting using my filters 😁👍
@@PaulthomsonphotographyUk nice to listen :) even if you use 2 filters together?
@@dbartos4948 Now I didn’t try that to be honest while I had it . 👍
What gfx camera you using?
50 Sii 👍
f/4 is not or ever eq to a 2,8 full-frame! Eq to ca 3,2 in depth of field but f/4 is f/4 in terms of light.
Absolutely! I get tired, when photographers are accomplished enough to get serious and buy into GFX, or other really expensive systems, and then they get the basics wrong! Focal length is focal length, aperture is aperture, regardless of crop factor. Crop factor affects the field-of-view, nothing else!
f/4 in full-frame terms for the GFX 100S would be 4 * 0.79 == 3.16 or roughly f/3.2, not f/2.8. Nice vid!
There is 4:3 vs 3:2 factor too.
Have you used the GF 23mm?
Yes I have 👍
@@PaulthomsonphotographyUk can you do a review that compares the two? Is there still any optical, image quality and rendering justification for the GF 23mm over the GF 20-35mm? The MTF charts of the zoom counterintuitively seem superior to the prime but they don't pick up things like distortion and a range of other parameters. Practically, although I may be okay with images at 20mm outside of the optimum optical range of the zoom, if I have to zoom into 23mm anyway to pick up the best image quality then perhaps I would be better off getting the prime if the prime is still superior compared to the zoom at 23mm? My interest is ultimate image quality and it is not clear to me that GF 23mm has that anymore. Thoughts?
@@antonroux3564 I could possibly do that when I eventually get hold of the lens for myself although my thoughts are the prime will always have a slight edge when it comes to image quality as there are less things to get in the way internally . However I think it would be really hard to tell unless you were pixel peeping. For me the 20-35 is way more useful as it gives me a bigger focal range to work with. 👍✌️
@@PaulthomsonphotographyUk thanks for your thoughts. I'm not so much into "pixel peeping" but it sounds like I should wait for further critiques down the track
Did well to fly the drone between the tree trunks
Thanks Michael 😊✌️
It's actually not F2.8. If you use the ratio of .79 to convert its actually 3.16, or round up F3.2...
Naturally, I bought the 23mm f4 a few months ago .....
Typical isn’t 🤦♂️✌️
You'll love it. My favorite lens on my 50R.
Excellent shots?
Thanks Luigi 😊✌️
dude~unnusual ~have a good day- 📢
Your typical dated slow lenses @F4.0. Where is F2.0 or F2.8?. Beside all that said. No landscape shooters need AF on wide lenses.
ATG & I say total failure because it doesn't have ATG's Focus scale in feet/meters, no focus index nor DOF scales.
FIY:
one can focus faster with dated/dead Hasselblad 500C/M's lenses because those important information are missing on many of today lenses that companies are selling to the beginners, weekends & amateur markets.
ATG & I say, One does not need AF on wide angle lenses.
So I’m not seeing a whole lot of distortion. Are you correcting or is it rather distortion free? This lens has me very interested in the GFX line.
I have to say I didn’t notice any huge distortion at all with this lens really very good 😁✌️
@@PaulthomsonphotographyUk that’s incredible! Looks like a very promising combo that would be upgrade proof for a god handful of years to come. Thanks for the reply.
