I had an undeserved hit 12 mo ago, two dives in the HBO chamber, overnight admission to the hospital, etc etc etc. Showed my DAN insurance card, filled out one piece of paper- never paid a penny. DAN covered 100%, my private insurance was never even billed. So thankful to EVERYONE involved.
Great video as always. The only thing I would add is that DAN will also cover new students if the instructor signs them up for free during training. Another great benefit
I have been diving since 2000, and got DAN membership right at the start, thanks to advice from my instructor. On my 25th dive, I had a (stupid) equipment malfunction, and got bent. I called the emergency hotline, and was given all the info I needed, including setting me up with the recompression chamber in Seattle. Talking to a pro who understands what a diver who gets bent might be feeling...well, I felt calm and supported. I now have close to 300 dives, and I will NEVER let my DAN membership lapse! It should be a requirement for all divers!
I just paid my very first DAN subscription this recent June as a newly certified OW diver. James has made my day by providing a thorough and complete explanation on why joining ie supporting DAN is truly a smart thing to do as a diver, both new and experienced. Kudos!
Thanks for this video. I’m on holiday in a Ecuador at the moment, have just completed my PADI rescue diver course and am having a few days of down time before heading to the Galapogas for 5 days of hopefully brilliant diving. I’d heard of DAN but didn’t really know what it was. I’ve just signed up and am LOVING Alert Diver whilst relaxing at the beach. Thanks for letting me know about this ✌️🤙🤙
Well, to be perfectly honest it sounds like you are better off with DAN insurance AND American Express loaded with $20k the minimum - this way you'll be able to save your life yourself, with or without DAN assistance, and maybe get reimbursed later on. I don't think Woody has canceled his DAN insurance policy after all. But definitely DAN insurance on it's own, without your research, planning and reliable backup 💳 seems to give a false sense of security. DAN does a great job, it's a wonderful organization, but the risk stays there with you.
Really great video James! I've been a DAN member shortly after I started diving in 2015, and like you said it's not only the peace of mind of insurance, but the whole reason why the organization exists in the first place and the amount they contribute to the industry. If I ever do become an instructor, DAN will definitely be a module I would add.
I had been a diver for years before joining DAN. I was an occasional diver who went maybe once a year while on vacation and never thought I needed it. After all, I'm not a risk taker and always kept things safe. Then I joined a dive club so I could do more diving. Even after joining a club, I still didn't have DAN for the first year or so before a dive buddy in the club got bent. Now I have DAN, I'll tell anyone to get DAN, that dive accidents don't just happen to others and can happen to anyone.
That's right! We want every dive to be a safe dive however, dive accidents can happen to anyone. Take DCI, for example, it can happen to any diver regardless of how safe their dive profile may seem.
Perfect timing James. Me and my daughter are currently taking the DAN First Aid course. Been thinking of you during the training due to your DCS incident last year and that all the boat video's in the course work were filmed on Horizon Divers boats and dock. We've been on Horizon boats with you a couple of times. Thank you for the videos, and keep them coming.
Outstanding presentation. As a DAN referral physician for many years and having been on the treating side as a hyperbaric/diving physician, I can attest to the benefits of DAN membership. I also purchase my own DAN insurance!
Recently certified here, I signed up for DAN and got the intermediate insurance plan as well. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind, like paying for AAA - that tow is worth more than the membership fee!
James, Powerful commentary this week. I have been a DAN member since the mid 1980'S. they are a great resource. it is a check that I write every year....
Great episode. I’ve been a member of DAN since my open water cert printed. Thank you for the summary (particularly since I never read the fine print discussing coverage)
I was just air flighted out of Roatan last week with dcs. I also spent 3 plus hours in the hyperbaric chamber. I am so thankful I had Dan or I would still be stuck on the island. Best investment of my life! No one such dive without Dan.
Had an accident on a dive boat out of Jupiter where I completely tore the right quadriceps off the patella while moving/slipped on the deck of the boat on the surface interval. DAN reimbursed me for ALL my expenses related to that accident - ER doctor, imaging, surgery. It took months but that’s America for you…it cost me $7000 (I actually haggled the price down for the surgery as it was out of pocket)….and DAN reimbursed ALL my receipts. As a dive pro - especially here in America/Florida I will ALWAYS have my DAN insurance.
I’m glad you’re doing this video. Where I live you can also get a medical helicopter insurance to a trauma center (for any injury) and it’s insanely affordable. But every year before I fly to the Caribbean I renew my DAN policy for my kids (teens) and myself for the year. I have a DAN BC tag on my gear with my name and any medical info.
Great information. I’m an AAUS scientific diver and I got the opportunity to take the DAN first aid for professional divers. What a GREAT course -I learned so much. Everything DAN does is high quality.
James that was a great video is was very informative and I totally agree with everything that you said and I believe everyone here would agree that safe should always be the number one thing on our lists so thank you for a more in depth look at DAN for there diving needs
The membership dues are insignificant compared to what we pay for even a single dive vacation or the gear we have all bough. Been a member since day 1 diving.
This content is in stark contrast to the experience described on DiveTalk. Where, Woody almost died trying to receive help from DAN. Additionally, there are several anecdotes from other divers regarding their close calls with DAN. Disappointing.
Not to sound like one ups man I have over 6 years too. It’s the best peace of mind. I have talked to a couple of divers and said how much DAN helped them
DAN lives off of insurance, but -as you have seen- it is much more than an insurance company. Member or not, DAN has already made more for divers than any other diving insurance company ever will.
James, as a dive professional, do you also carry DAN's professional liability insurance? If so, or if not, why? I know of some dive professionals in my area who prefer the HUB International competitor because of their higher coverage of legal defense costs, and greater flexibility in case of missed standards. Your thoughts?
It is indeed very expensive, typical American. I have my insurance with my own health insurer in the Netherlands which standard included support for dive accidents but also transport. All other topics you can find on the internet.
Was on the boat yesterday and a diver got taken by air ambulance … I was thinking today that I need insurance as my family wouldn’t appreciate the bill for a helicopter ride.
Absolutely not… worldwide. Which was the main reason I signed up. And the benefits are fantastic. Of course, like all insurance; you hope you’ll never need it, but when/if you do, they’ll have you covered. And as James said, the research material and info available is awesome.
@@nitaiperez each DAN office is independent. DAN Americas covers the US and Canada. They also cover the Asia Pacific region. DAN World covers Latin America, the Caribbean, and a few islands that don't fall within another DAN jurisdiction. DAN Southern Africa covers the African continent, DAN Japan covers Japan, DAN Europe covers all of Europe and the middle east, and they just opened an office in China.
Despite sounding like a good organisation, I’ve never understood the benefit to DAN, living in Australia. Medicare & private health insurers would cover your medical evac and treatment if diving in Aus / NZ. When diving outside of Aus, travel insurance should cover it . Am I missing something?
some health insurers doesn't cover extreme sport, same with travel insurance, must read the fine print of insurance also recompression chamber is expensive and Medicare & private health insurers may not fully cover it all
I remember when DAN started. Wow, 1982 the year you were born. I became an Instructor in 1982. I feel really old right now! Where is my cane and orthopedic diving fins.🧝

I can’t imagine diving without DAN membership, their offerings and services are a huge asset to the scuba community.
Thank you for choosing DAN! ☺

Thank you for choosing DAN! It's because of our DAN members that we can continue to offer the emergency hotline for divers around the world.

Well, recent events suggest that you are better off with an American Express credit card.
Ask Woody from Dive Talk.

Your membership is invaluable! Thanks to our DAN members, we can extend the hotline's availability to divers worldwide. 🌏
What's really remarkable is how inexpensive membership is.
Inexpensive with tons of coverage! Thank you for your continued support.
I'm not even a diver but I want to support DAN now. What a cool group of people.
Thank you! ☺
Great job. I have been an active member and proponent of DAN since becoming a dive professional in 1997

Always have been, always will be DAN from the time my first dive instructor recommended them.
Points right on! I’ve been a member for 15 years
Been a DAN member for 20 years.
I like the DAN Southern Africa YT channel as well. Lots of videos on diving medical topics.
Thank you for supporting the DAN Southern Africa RUclips channel. And thank you James for the great video on the importance of DAN.

Just paid my 6th year of renewal. Completely worth it, if you are active in this sport.
Watch dive talk video on what they experienced. Kinda scary.

1981!?! You are a baby 😊. My BF and I have been members for the last 8+years.
What can I expect from a PADI wreck speciality course, what is the next upgrade and so on. I would like to know more about it
went to check my DAN membership and realized it had lapsed. just renewed my membership. big, big supporter of DAN
Their magazine is amazing!

Thanks I will 100 percent join
Ty for explaining this I didn’t know about
What issue was the Alert Diver magazine you showed? When you are a member do you get electronic access to back issues of Alert Diver?
Great Information! Thanks
Not to sound like one ups man I have over 6 years too. It’s the best peace of mind. I have talked to a couple of divers and said how much DAN helped them
Hey James, can you include the link to DAN membership page?
I'm currently a member of aquamed because I'm living in europe.
Should I switch to D.A.N. in the future?

Does DAN have coverage for freedivers?
Hi James, think you may need to review the text under this video, doesn't seem to make much sense!
I'm a DAN member and I was not aware of Alert Diver magazine ... is this US only?
Was on the boat yesterday and a diver got taken by air ambulance … I was thinking today that I need insurance as my family wouldn’t appreciate the bill for a helicopter ride.
Are you located in FL 🇺🇸 or the Philipines ???
Great videos thanks a lot bro
Commenting to appease the RUclips gods…will look into membership next, thanks for the advice
Member, hoping I never need it to use it
James. I would like to take on one of your classes can I get your contact information please
What about the drivers ambulance network? 😅🤣
I really wanted to join DAN, but they have left us in Brazil, never to come back apparently... There are a LOT of divers left for themselves.
Is this only available for US/Canada personnel?

With all of this state of the art equipment, dive computer, certifications, schools and instructors, why so many accidents?
What is your name..? Not in the description..
Cheapest private jet experience money can buy 😂 believe me
Not the way to get there though😂
Sorry James, no diving for the next 2 months; there's rugby.
DAN App does not work at all ! its been about a year since they were going to implement it. since " woody " had his accident
