It is not that being a youtuber is not hard work. It is that all your hard work may be for nothing if YT, like Darth Vader, alters the deal and demonitizes you. Or shadowbans you. Or that some dillweed who hates you, or a record label copyright claims your video(s). At least when Glenn still worked for Chrysler he had a secure income. YT may be more fun, but it is not secure income. As long as you depend on a 3rd party platform you will always be subject to their whims, without the securities that come from a job under contract.

    • @snap-off5383

    • @StaticR
      @StaticR Месяц назад +1

A new, more calculated take on this:
If re-selling is a planned option, only buy expensive if the value depreciation is going to be less than the value of a cheap guitar.
If you buy an expensive guitar for like 3k and 5 years later sell it for $2500 you might as well could be getting a $800 guitar and re-sell it for $300, if you can find one that's about equal in quality (which you most likely can). The net loss is exactly the same.
Though in actuality you could easily sell your $800 guitar for closer to $500 so your net-loss would be only $300 instead of $500, plus you've still got more cash in the bank while you use it.
Expensive guitars are really only worth it if you can be sure you can re-sell them at close to or above the buying price. If the net loss from value depreciation is enough to cover an entire cheap guitar you might as well just get a cheap guitar instead and spare yourself some headache.

He was the lead guitarist of Chimera, and he talked about going through Peavey JSX and XXX amplifiers, and even getting sent ENGL Powerball and Savage amps and between him and the other guitarist they decided to just stick with the 6505s they were using because all the other amps basically sounded the same. This was done back in the 2010s and prior, which just goes to show that some people have been using their brains for a while now.

So, in addition to working the EQ on your amp, your second step - cheaper even that trying new speakers - is an EQ pedal in your effects loop. It lets you give the amp controls a bit more welly and make a more precise control in certain frequency bands that the amp's EQ just doesn't give you.

Last week I found a Gen Z music producer that had never heard The Beatles or Pink Floyd. He did a full listen through of Dark Side of the Moon and he mentioned that it "felt weird" that the tempo floated a bit and wasn't tied to a grid. So yeah, some producers are totally in on the quantized metronome. It's actually his preference for music. I assume he is not the only one and we have a generation of people brought up on video game music and techno, EDM that is fundamentally altering the way they prefer music to sound.

As far as the "bigger studio" question that you asked us, while I would personally like to see what goes into building one, I think that YOU are the one who should answer that. Not the viewers (who would definitely not finance such an endeavor), but you. Do YOU need a bigger studio, because your content is awesome and informative as it is, despite complaining about lack of room due to surplus of gear.
P.S. Is my English okay? ;)

Eric Rutan may still own Morrisound's old tape machine. Some of my all time faves were put down on that very machine. Granted, Eric may command a decent pricetag these days, if he even has time to record away from CC ....but if you're seriously shopping for a real studio, and looking for somebody who's willing to go off-grid ....It wouldn't hurt to ask.

Couple of thoughts about the new studio diary thing.
    1) You own the space in which your current studio is. Elsewhere you either get a loan to buy and pay interest, or rent and risk eviction.
    2) YT is full of mediocre studio build diaries. To make it useful (=show the *actual* steps and how to make it soundproof etc, not only an overview), you'd need to make it so detailed that it very likely is not worth your time.
    3) Do you need a new studio? You've said you have less and less physical clients over, so most likely you're better off renting another space when you need it for drums etc.
Good luck. Of course I'd watch a good quality studio building series.

I think when it comes to engineers dropping the metronome I have a philosophy on this. In the mid to late 1800s when the first recordings took place, they were designed to capture live performance, which let's face it, at that time, all music was "live" with no records to listen to at will. When recording started in earnest, it was always capturing a live performance to be played at will via a record. Nowadays, we've gone full circle where we are now trying to emulate studio recordings in a live environment, which for me is kind of arse-about-face. Sure, some bands will record "live" in the studio but they're the exception rather than the rule and in a time of accessible technology, home studios are just waaay too convenient. I think this is why we are now inundated with polished performances, sterile sounding recordings and not much in the way of quality song writing, certainly for punk and metal. Nobody wants to break out of that mould nowadays and engineers certainly don't want to make their lives more difficult with recording a live band in the studio.

We watch you as a way of doing what you do without actually having to do it. So go expand your real estate and run old consoles, cause I’m never gonna do it and want to see it.

I definitely apply the last 5% matters to anything I do musically, including my choice in gear. When not doing that I feel like I'm doing a lousy job.
if I don't use proper technique because the sound is in the speaker it's objectively gonna be lousy, if I don't choose the right amp or guitar for a gig I myself will feel like I'm lousy even if many people will tell me otherwise.
The thing is that we should agknowledge that it's 5% and not something like 50% or whatever. There's a difference between choosing based on your own awareness and priorities vs choosing based on misinformation.

I think it would be cool to talk about using analog mixers in the studio and what we would need to configure that with the computer or any interfacing needed. I have a Tascam Model 24 which acts as the interface and I like using that so far, and Tascam just updated the Mixer to the 2400 which accommodates more insert points for outboard gear but is quite pricey but below that $3000 threshold.
Oh and yes! Would love to see more about the Seventh Circle Audio stuff, I heard great things about them.

We measured them to a click after the fact and the whole thing was so close ot was crazy. Our drummer was a walking clock.

My take on the "Made in USA" thing is that it mostly is from the 70s/80s when Japanese car companies were kicking US manufacturer's assses. They sold high-quality cheap cars at a loss to capture market share and US companies simply couldn't compete.
"Made in USA" wasn't so much about getting a better car, it was about keeping the business within US borders. Bullsh*t either way.
I did a speech in high school in 1983 about how refusing to buy crappy merchandise was patriotic if it send the message to MFG. You see, because I was a teenager, I literally understood everything there was to know about economics and manufacturing. Plus my older brother was a "Do I get a Toyota or a Datsun" guy, so I didn't have a choice really.

Made in America doesn't always have the "weight" it used to. We're finding that things like pots and pans made in American outlast other stuff by a large factor. When it comes to other stuff, especially electronics, it's a completely crapshoot, even with reputable American brands. I'm in favor of "Buy American", but I'm not a fan of "buy garbage". If a product made elsewhere is equal and less expensive, that's where I'm likely going to go.
As far as that Neve, or rather computers in general, you need to do backups. You can image your drive and push the image back so your downtime is reduced. You can also have backup drives with your image on it so you can just swap drives and go. I recently had a server fail, and while I didn't lose any data, I lost all the shares and other stuff configured. Thank goodness I had my back-up image. I just purchased a new drive, installed it, pushed the image to it and picked up where I left off. Of course, having 2 servers helps(primary and backup). We need to think backup plans because all drives and media fail. This is a matter of "when", not "if". If you're rocking a drive for more than 5 years, you're on borrowed time. If its more than 3 years, consider replacing after backing up. If it's "new to 3 years", just hope it's not an early fatality. In other words: trust nothing and make multiple backups and don't trust those either.

5:57 - For "how to design a studio from scratch", would really love that. As you mentioned, it's very expensive to pull off. As cool as that is though, I'd imagine most of us viewers play in whatever space we find tucked away in our homes. A video on just basics we can do in our restricted space to get started would go a long way for a lot of us.
But if you find someone else, trying to make a studio from scratch but don't know where to start, it might be a good opportunity to help that person build their studio and document it.

GLENNN!!! Regarding tone, cabs, speakers, IRs for bass and guitar. Can you review Celestion BN12-300S:
Celestion recommend these for BOTH guitar and bass, their support (signed as Dr Decibel) just warn that using them in a semi-open guitar cab will lose some bottom end, though it's totally safe even to play bass through a setup like that.
Some big names in boutique cabs market use them (Zilla, Barefaced, Quilter), and some people use them with a poweramp instead of FRFR for modellers.
I'm thinking to load my H&K 100W 2x12 combo with these for capturing "moving air" with a mic, and blending that with tracks with IRs using Captor X or similar, both bass and guitar.
I wonder how these would work for guitar/bass metal tones for someone who knows what they're doing, and how much using these in different types of cabs (2x12 vs 4x12, open vs closed, etc.) and/or using EQ at the end of the signal chain in effects loop would affect the tone.

I learned tracking on a Studer a800 and try to think the same way when recording in a DAW. The less is more approach helps with option paralysis while working in a DAW means less variables and faster work flow. Also I prefer a count-in with the click track off. I like when the drums are in time and the rest of the band works off that. The end result sounds more like a real performance

Also, I believe room treatment is just as important for mixing as changing speakers is for guitar. That's where the real difference lies.

I'd guess the difference between having a console like the neve and just using a daw is the fact is has to cut your work time in half maybe even more since you're working with everything in a more physical workspace and you can micro manage little tasks a lot easier and faster than trying to manage everything with a mouse or god forbid a track pad. Is it worth $100k to most people? Obviously not most people don't have the space for one. However the fact you can record a band off the floor and directly isolate everything straight onto the console you are recording with is the difference between a 3 hour recording session and a 30 minute recording session. Time is money

With regard to virtual drums. I once went to see a friend play a gig in a tiny venue, his bass drum broke mid set and they had to carry on without it. A side effect of this was much of the other sound cleaned up significantly. I'm assuming that's the lack of bass vibrations bouncing around, affecting the bass guitar, guitars and mics. My question is, would there be an advantage in running a virtual bass drum, straight to the PA desk, to alleviate problems of bass vibrations bleeding into other instruments? I'm not a musician, just an interested fan.
