    I have been painting with this paints for one year, since they came on market in Finland. Really loving Roman's style in pigment design and how the paint behaves itself. In my opinion this brand competes well with paints from DS or Schminche. This paints are young but promising. They hove some downsides what comes to consistency of the paint in the wells, and how it variates between different pigments. In my opinion that is a minor issue to mention and in daily use it gets less noticeable after paints have been exposed to same moisture environment for few weeks, for example in a palette tin. The granulation of the paints and complex colors are amazing. Roman has three and four pigmented colors that ricochet and shine beautiful on a paper after granulation process have been started . So far this was an attribute that I loved Daniel Smith Paints for. But now we have much more option in selection of complex colors and fair price. Roman has also soft and creamy colors, like Naples yellow, that actually variates in few tones. Over all paints in my opinion are bright and vibrant, and they had no faded even I cooked them for two weeks in UV owen as primary lightfastness test. So far as I noticed Roman uses only best and most suitable ingridients in the mixes, that works well together on a chemistry level, with no additional "filling" components that are common in paint industry. This is a big line, and probably 140 colors in total is a bit too much for a starting artist or student, but there is definitely lot of good choices for everyone if you know your favourites. And as long as the man behind the brand is alive, this this product represent a small industry with "quality" "exclusive" "and custom made" labels.

      I would really love to see the results of this UV test! I took off RS Van Dyck Brown from my palette because I was concerned about its lightfastness, did you test that one too?

    Aquarius has a really impressive range of earth pigments. Even some of the single pigment ones, like caput mortuum and van Dyke brown, separate into different hues in washes. One of the very few brands that makes a vine black. Such a nice line of paints. Hopefully they will sell them in tubes at some point!
    And yeah, the wax from the wax paper in the wrapper, does sometimes stick the paints, which can make for some weird effects. But the wax layer quickly gets washed off from use.

    • @SadieSavestheDay

    The mummy red Brown is probably called like that because there is a similar color (mummy bauxite) that used to be made with the insides of mummies.
    Artist stopped using it after learning what it was made of 👀

    • @SadieSavestheDay
      @SadieSavestheDay  5 лет назад +2

      Oh yeah, you’re totally right 😆 I just didn’t think of it because there is already a caput mortuum (another name for mummy brown) in this line, and it is closer (to me anyway) to what seems to have been the genuine hue of the original pigment.

    I don't know if you already figured this out, but mummy brown pigment has its origins using the ground up flesh of actual mummies. That doesn't happen anymore of course, but the name persists, and people have gotten pretty good at imitating the original colour. Crazy right???

    You need to check with the Co. But I can tell you a very long long time ago when they first started making paint they used crushed up Mummy's to make some colors. And they would have the word Mummy in their names. Just a bit of Art History. These seem to be lovely paints. Very Interesting. TYFS

    Roman szmal is becoming my favourite watercolor brand. I only have a few colors so far.... but everything I have seen online, it looks like the whole range is awesome. And i just hope they can keep the price low and the quality up in the long run. So many times that once a company gets a little interested, the peice gets jacked up.... making it so it's not worth it anymore than other brands. Think of white nights.... they use to be a awesome value to quality... and now they are basically the same price as the other artist paints. Are they good paints, yeah. Are they as good as the other top brands in the price range.... no.

      Yeah! I totally forgot about that connection because there is a caput mortuum (another name for mummy brown) in the line that looks closer to the real color 😂 I think it is also a reference to a color from Daniel Smith.

    Thank you for this excellent video. I also just watched your QoR video, also super useful! I love your approach to materials. Re: the name Mummy Transparent Red: for quite a while, some red-brown paints were actually made from mummy flesh. Yeah, pretty grotesque. The original real-mummy color, Mummy Brown, was similar to this Mummy Red and that may be why this painter maker chose the name. See, for example: www.artinsociety.com/the-life-and-death-of-mummy-brown.html Caput Mortuum, translated as "dead head" or "worthless remains," btw, is also a reference to the use of real mummies, originally, to make that pigment. Apparently all these related colors, originally mummy-based, are now iron oxide based instead - thankfully.

    I have a choice between schmincke and Roman what do I get?/

    • @StorytellingHeadshots
      @StorytellingHeadshots 3 года назад +1

      Both! :-)
      (But maybe thats just me who does that! 😜💯)
      They are very different effects. The schminke “moves” much faster on the page while Roman sz stays a bit more in place.
      Also, there is a big differential in price between the two. Schminke is undeniably excellent paint. But the Roman Szmal has some quite interesting and unique colors.
      I suggest getting a few individual pans in each line to see which fits your style (or your mood!) better!
      Good luck! And have fun exploring! :-)

    • @SadieSavestheDay
      @SadieSavestheDay  3 года назад

      They are both great paints! If you like honey based paints, then Szmal is perfect for you. If you want a paint that is a bit more traditional in terms of being less sticky and a bit less character but very dependable, then Schmincke. But honestly you can’t go wrong

      @tmp0922 5 лет назад

      I looked very closely...they don’t and it pains me, as I think this is the only new brand that’s come out in the last few years I was really interested in, it looks easy to control which is a plus for and illustrator and the granulation ohhh the granulation would add texture that I’ve been dying for both in my work as an illustrator and for traditional painting that I do off the clock. I’m married to a Latina and will not be returning to the US as I feel it’s to dangerous, maybe Canada but it would be a good long while if that ever happens.
