Really good story, was planning to buy the prequel from Audible but they don't have it (Plaque ship can be read as a standalone but it does reference earlier events a few times).

Alice Mary Norton aka Andre Norton. Started her career as Andrew North Look under that name for some of her older works

She was a woman. I met her at a convention in Tampa, Florida, and got her autograph. That was about 1983 or 84.

This one took a long time to get going. The first 2hrs are boring trade negotiations with many alien tribes not related to the plague plot nor mentioned again
