  • Salisbury, Zimbabwe
Sign - 'Radio City' camera pans down to show various radios for sale. Back to school shop. Good general shots of Salisbury, shops, traffic, modern buildings, street scenes, skyscraper blocks, modern flats and apartments, statue of Rhodes, British and non-British goods in shops. Various shots of African youngsters hanging around in the streets, seemingly with little to do, no white people are seen in these shots. (16mm. E/C Neg.)
Note: Zimbabwe formerly known as Rhodesia now calls its capital Harare, instead of Salisbury, as it was known at the time of this film being shot.

While ancient Rhodesia was a major exporter of agricultural products, 80% of the food needed today is imported. The brutal eviction of white farmers - Appaling crimes even on white Children- and their staff by the arsonist gangs activated by the Mugabe regime led to the displacement and misery of tens of thousands of agricultural workers.

Because the terrorist were funded by the Russians and Chinese to end Rhodesia, and Rhodesia made a declaration of independence because they didn't agree to British terms of a black run country. whites were paid more but the parliament did make efforts to desegregate later in the 70s. It is complete BS since the black majority didn't have the same skills in the government as the whites which justified Ian Smiths government for a time.

Great Britain pushed for sanctions after UDI, and then took it to the UN. The wonderful a**holes of my country, such as Henry Kissinger, stuck their noses in, supported the sanctions at the UN and basically, Rhodesia's two former best friends became two of their worst enemies. I think it largely was America's fault, but the British House of Commons is the only parliamentary body that could have officially ratified Rhodesia's declaration of independence, but never did. Of course this led to Rhodesia not being recognized as a "legitimate" independent country as well. Once again, my country acted like we own the world.

All these comments about how “great” the country looked back then…..very unfortunate.
At its peak the white population in Zimbabwe was about 4.4%. But this video would have you believe it’s like 90% white. Which means the prosperity evident in this video was obtained at the expense of overwhelming majority of the native people who were probably starving to death.
These aren’t images to be proud of. They are an example of how affluent a small group of oppressive minority can be while majority live in poverty.
