The Rhodesian leader Ian Smith,, having beaten off a right -wing challenges to his leadership at home, is widely believed to be on the brink of fresh talks with Harold Wilson.
What is Smith up to? Llew Gardner reports from Salisbury on the widespread suspicion of the latest moves among both African and White opponents of Smith on both sides.

The problem is; the country went from minority rule of a small percentage to minority rule of one man.
Sonetimes you just have to shut up than to insult us blacks. I used to work with an Asian guy (Indian I think, although I never asked) who was posted to Rhodesia back in the mid to late 70s as a civil servant, seconded to help out with government development using his UK civil service knowledge and experience. He spent 3 years there until 1978 or 1979, basically just before Mugabe took power. He said it was a beautiful country, very modern, well organised and efficiently ran, clean and with law and order. He loved it there and said that when his secondment ended, he and his wife were very sad to leave. He watched from afar as the country descended into a shambles and always said it was a terrible decline that should never had happened.
That's not really the fault of "black people", but rather "Mugabe" and his cronies.

Zimbabwe looks more modern in the 60s than now
Depends where you looked! All the problems, the poor, the shelters with no water or power, are not in White areas. All the systematic abuse of individuals on a daily basis is not on display here. Being White with a good job, a car, a house... yes, very nice, very modern.

@NOWHERE PEOPLE Did you even watch the film? It says almost verbatim that blacks are having an unemployment crisis in Rhodesia. Also for a country where for out of every 100 people 96 were black there were surprisingly very few blacks in the film.

Let's assume all blacks in Zimbabwe lived in tribal villages for a second. You like to list all the positives of "western civilization" but you don't see the negatives as well.
Yes, population did expand with the surplus food from industrial scale farming. But this obviously made tribal villages unsustainable.
So what happened? Blacks had to move to cities to find work to feed themselves, remember these are exactly the same problems European peasants faced with the land acquisition and improvements in farming and overpopulation.
There were a couple of positives from this, better healthcare, greater wealth creation etc.. but working conditions were horrid for the peasents and the Blacks in apartheid SA and Rhodesia.
Difference between what happened in Europe was they overthrew the monarchies and established republics to better represent the masses. What did Rhodesia and SA do when they were in the same boat? Well they cracked down on them and basically forced them into a preputial state of dependence without advancement.
I mean look at the statistics of Black South Africans in 1994. They were just as bad off as their neighbors especially in the homelands and townships. Very similar for Zimbabweans.

One of the biggest differences that existed in Rhodesian society was between whites who loved Rhodesia and South Africa and whites who only loved Rhodesia.
A lot of whites in Rhodesia paid little attention to race whilst in South Africa race was deliberately magnified
Actually, the differences between Rhodesia and South Africa are often magnified by some dishonest Rhodesians who want to distance themselves from white South Africans. Election results show that only about 20 per cent of Rhodesia's whites were liberals. Nowadays, however, some former right-wing Rhodesians like to have a liberal persona.
@bLackstar an absolute lie in every way. Rhodesia was offered several times to become the fifth (sixth after Namibia was added) province of South Africa but the government turned it down due to cultural and political differences.
Early on when Rhodesia was the colony of southern Rhodesia and South Africa a British dominion they refused on the basis of culture. Later on they refused because of their disdain for racial Apartheid.
Ironically, many of the Rhodesians who criticised South Africa for apartheid were happy to live in segregated suburbs themselves in Rhodesia; suburbs like Avondale, Braeside and Cranborne and sent their children to whites-only government schools like Queensdale, Hatfield and Nettleton. Moreover, whites born in Rhodesia were mostly born in segregated hospitals like the Lady Chancellor in Salisbury. As I have said already, the differences between Rhodesia and South Africa are often exaggerated. If I were black, i would have preferred to live in Rhodesia but all in all it had a great deal in common with the continent's wealthiest and most powerful country.

The Rhodesian dollar had an exchange rate of 1:1 against the USD in 1979 under white minority rule.
20 years later, under Black rule, you couldn’t buy a loaf of bread with a wheelbarrow full of Zimbabwe dollars.
That tells you everything you need to know about which group did a better job at governing the country.

I am sorry, but what you say is not right:
1.) The Rhodisian Army was integrated into the new Zim. Army: It didnt stage a coup it helped to integrate the different forces. Many fine regiments were dissolved: No white soldier rebelled nor did the whites start a civil war. The Rhodesian Civil Service continued its work and supported the new country.
2.) Capitalist companies want to make profits they dont care about your colour or culture. So i doubt that international companies left Zimbabwe because they hated the new black government but maybe because the government created a hyperinflation and massivly increased taxes to fund its corrupt government.
3.) Zimbabweans quickly became one of the best educated people in Africa. The literacy rate is astonishingly high. A good leader would have used the taxes from the whites to lift black people up, to give them even better education, making Zim an African Sylicon Valley. Sadly nothing of this happened. And that alone is the failiure of the black Hitler Mugabe.

Part 2. However my sympathies and compassion lie with the good, brave African people who struggled during that era. As a white Zimbabwean, I can say Rhodesia wasn't perfect. In fact the Rhodesian govt was at times cruel and in the wrong by how they treated blacks most unfairly. Although Rhodesia was much fairer compared to apartheid South Africa. If only the Whites and Blacks worked together in Unity, Friendship, Tolerance, Loving Kindness, Compassion and Peace. What a country we could have made! A Zimbabwe where both Blacks and Whites were United and where we produced one of the most prosperous countries in Africa, let alone in the world. Despite what fascist Zanu PF and Mugabe did to our beautiful country, there is great hope for our country in the future. A nation built on Community, Love, Kindness, Compassion, Friendship, Forgiveness, Tolerance and Unity for all living Beings. A country where our Wildlife thrives ( a wildlife capital in Africa), healthy National Parks and where the people are joyful, free and prosperous. I believe in it with all my heart. Rhodesia is just a memory. South Africa is not far behind. The US and UK will suffer the same fate if mass immigration continues.
The Rhodesian's big miscalculation is that they gave in to the concept of majority rule simply too late. It ultimately fuelled the rise of the militant and more extreme opposition( ZANLA etc.). You almost wonder if they had gone with the path Garfield Todd envisioned of gradually starting the integration of the black moderates in the early 60s into key government positions and effectively building a class of competent black ministers to take over ultimately. We would have black majority rule by at least the early 80s. In this scenario, you would have had a black majority government with the key competencies to effectively run the economy and country. The Rhodesians were just too racist to see the big picture; ironically, they were the architects of their demise.
White Rhodesians built the infrastructure, why should they not be allowed to be in charge? They wanted to work towards democracy but forcing black majority rule only due to the fact they have a large population is ridiculous.
@@ShotsMerkzAll The fact of the matter is in any society, the will and sentiment of the majority trump any other group for better or worse. The white Rhodesians could not accept this fate, so they took a route of maximum resistance(e.g. the war, UDI). Ultimately they were left worse off for it, hence my point that if they had recognised this early enough, they could have had a more direct hand into which black government would rule the eventual black majority government and have much more favourable terms for their existence in that country
@@TheLinmaster Rhodesia is not a case of bitter white resistance but rather do a defence against terrorists (communists, extremists and unfortunately the guilt ridden British). Ian Smith said multiple times that it’s okay for a black men to eventually become the leader but it must be through a democratic process. Brits forced Rhodesia to hand over full control to the majority population. It was senseless and unintelligent considering what occurred afterwards.
Regardless the white Rhodesians ultimately came out with nothing to show for all their resistance. A pointless war was fought where thousands of lives were lost, and quite comically, Zimbabwe ended up being run by an ideological Marxist party. My question is, was it worth it? Or, with the help of hindsight, can we say they could have taken an alternative route, such as comprising with the moderates in the 60s as they tried too little too late to do in the late 70 with Muzowera and co? Nonetheless, Rhodesia is a long-forgotten place of history, and Zimbabwe is today. And as they say, the past is a place to learn from and not live in.
@@TheLinmaster What we learn from the past is that a couple hundred men can visit a land and build a magnificent country filled with the most beautiful buildings, trees and infrastructure that resembles a sense of paradise and richness. We learn that guilt and terrorism destroyed it, we now look at the current place with a sense of shame. What's this English descent talk? Ian Smith is in a large part of Scots descent as are many others throughout that part of Africa & around about it. 🏴
What's the difference?
Smith was of both Scottish and English descent. An Anglo-Scot. He had a Scottish father and an English mother. Many of us Rhodesians were Anglo-Scottish including my family and I. English, Welsh, Irish and Scottish. In other words, we Rhodesians were British. Rhodesia also had some settlers of Greek, Italian, Portuguese and other Mediterranean heritage as well as some Afrikaans families too.

Interesting commentary there on the Central Party of Pat Bashford. Unfortunately these moderate white voices couldn't be heard in the fervour of the UDI. Didn't stand a chance. The Tobacco farmer interviewed gives a very accurate perception of Ian Smith.

The statement about a poor white in UK, having a better chance is pointed. Though I would agree the British Government change of attitude between 1945 and 1960 did leave those it encouraged to settle in Africa in the lurch.
Economic sanctions were not imposed on Rhodesia because it did not have problack policy. Not because of racist policies and denial of blacks human rights. I've just been on the phone to the Zimbabwean embassy in Tokyo today, as I wanted to send a parcel to Zimbabwe, but Japan will/can not send post there, due to Covid 19 restrictions. I wanted to help a school in Zimbabwe as they helped some Zimbabwean pupils at a school I worked at.

Honestly been researching about Rhodesia. The conclusion I've come up with is that Rhodesia Europeans were correct in keeping the wealth voting system since the vast majority of residents didn't have allegiance to the state or the ideals of uniting together for the greater good of the nation and the progress for a better future. Ian Smith could have implemented a federal job guarantee run by local councils to improve the infrastructure and educational needs of the populace (check out modern monetary theory). I believe this would have improved relations with the native Zimbabweans and encourage economically integration of the whole nation. Indirectly discourage the enlisting of guruela fighters by offering a meaningful job to anyone who seeks work. Just my thoughts, please leave any comments for further intellectual discussion. ( I'm a native black African )

@@MRABDAHMED1 I can but it appears you're stuck in the 60s so let me give you an update. In 1980 the country ceased to be known as Rhodesia and became Zimbabwe. Majority rule was established and like most countries in Africa issues of corruption and bad governance hindered the country. So if you want to bring plausible solutions feel free . Crying and sulking about rhodesia like a baby abdool will not bring it back.

It is heartbreaking to see a wonderful, first world country like Rhodesia, turned into a third world basket case slum by the terrorists, who fought against it, aided and abetted by the UK and US. Ian Smith was a war hero, who ran Rhodesia better than the Labour shower who ran Britain into the ground in the 70's. History has proved he was right. If there were no sanctions and Rhodesia was left alone, it would have survived. By 1990/91, communism in Eastern Europe was dead, so therefore, no more backing of the terrs Mugabe, Nkomo et al.
Wanting to live under white rule as a white man is perfectly understandable, but then you have to be coherent and embrace racial seperatism and build your own enclave. Instead the white Rhodesians wanted apartheid in a multicultural country so that they could still keep their black employees, which like the Afrikaaners eventually lead to them being ruled by a black majority.

Rhodesia loved to use the merit argument to justify why it was mostly whites running the country but hardly did anything to help the "Blacks" reach the same level of merit. Like shooting someone in the knee but then complaining why they couldn't finish the race in the same time as you.

They didn't let them live near them, they didn't learn their languages, they didn't allow native political organizations (unless they were puppets).
