I’ve been a musician for 52 years, and a Beatles fan longer. I‘m probably as knowledgeable about the Beatles as any other amateur historian, but musically probably as knowledgeable as anyone else. I love the fact that there are people like Mark and others of my ilk. Mark, please finish the second book. Have you ever thought about breaking the second book into 2 parts so that you can finish and release the first part sooner?
I think appreciation for the Beatles keeps growing because with every passing year, it becomes more and more apparent that they cannot and will not be topped or rivalled. There was a brief moment in the 70s where Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd nipped at their heels, and then again in the 80s with Michael Jackson. Even the 90s had Nirvana… but now nearly 60 years later, it’s becoming clear that musically, culturally, and philosophically- no musical act will ever come close to the Beatles. And as such, reverence for what they achieved increases. They are not a phenomenon in musical history. They are a phenomenon in human history.
It's hard for people to realize the change that the Beatles brought to the world. When they came out they were young, vibrant and so different from what came before. Total game changers. It's hard for people 50 years on to realize before the Beatles came everything was staid and boring and formulaic. They literally changed the course of history. They were the new voice of Youth.
Such an important and overwhelming adventure.. To be able to face this task and being able to keep your focus is remarkable ! Mark is opening the doors to the history of the 20th Century.. Lary
Lary Dixon - yes! And it’s a crime he’s being shut out. This is the guy who will not rest until all stones are overturned to find the truth. Olivia Harrison should embrace Mark’s thoroughness and scholarship.
@@jrh11254 I think the stubbornness of Oliva is childish. If you look back on all the stories by Mark on George (Harrison), they were 99% complimentary, so she has no beef. Does she treat Geffory Gulliano the same? From the interviews, books, TV appearances Mark has always been complimentary all Beatles. We all have faults, George decided to dwell on the negative rather than the positive. It's a definite sign of immaturity on Olivia's behalf. Just because George said "Mark wasn't there" as George stated, there are literally hundreds of books on the JFK Assassination from people/writers who were "not there" but still have an accurate opinion of the situation.....because they researched the subject, so George's statement does NOT hold water!
Billy Shears - from what I understand (from a Lewisohn interview - and available on his channel) Harrison accused Mark publicly of being a bootlegger...and this because he allowed a reporter (I think from The Guardian) in to Abbey Road studios while he was accessing tapes/paper-records. Mark had even asked permission from EMI/A Road authorities for the reporter to be there. I think the reporter overstepped his boundaries and went beyond his stated objective. Why that led to Harrison’s statement and eventual shutting out of Lewisohn is anyone’s guess. I’m thinking it had more to do with Lewisohn having taken on the role of McCartney’s biographer. I think that alone made Lewisohn persona non grata in the Harrison camp. So petty.
He is a genuine scholar and a true gentleman.. Mark's work is based on Thorough Research and Integrity.. There is always going to be resistance by people who rely on second band news.... Lary
...they were talking about Magical Mystery Tour... it's been awhile since I've seen it, and it was good to see them, but it's never been one of my favorite thing's from them... but non the less, it was amazing just to see them, with all the music and the colors... my favorite part is when the tour guide tells the people on the bus, "If you look over here..." then it shows some views of the passing English country side... "But if you look over there..." Flying...
Born in January ‘52 I was 12 yrs when swept up in the American obsession w all things Beatles, then 13 with Rubber Soul, 14 w Revolver, 15 w SPLHCB, 16 w MMT and White Album ...and on and on... they were the soundtrack to my growing up and, now in my late 60s, still are. I won the age lottery vis-à-vis the Beatles.
This is the one area where Lewisohn is far off the mark there are so many kids and teenagers today millions of them who have no idea who the Beatles are and are not interested in their works
@@mynonameyt Why should he worship 'your' creator? He explains he's atheist, so no need for him to worship a God if he feels this doesn't exist. The discussion about Beatles vs Elvis and Marilyn. No one would wear a Beatles T-shirt without loving their music. The difference is huge; Elvis and Marilyn are sex symbols or has turned into sex symbols. Beatles are something completely different. The Beatles will always be about the music, even if everything about them also is interesting. But Beatles will never turn into sex symbols. They don't have that.
although i'm risking ridicule for saying this, it is the truth of my experience. my inner vision is highly tuned and shows me symbols that my intuition translates. when George died, i "looked" for him and i saw him sitting in a small cave in india. carved out of red soil. wearing rags, he was sitting with his right knee up, resting his right arm on it. he was recuperating from the ordeal of his illness with his head down, he quickly lifted his head and made eye contact with me. i sent him the love we all felt for him. thanks for reading this with an open mind. by the way, Ringo will be the last living Beatle. i saw this back in the mid 70's
Very interesting. Some of the comments the hosts make tend to be sweeping statements dismissing any criticism about the Beatles. As if the group never did anything subpar. Magical Mystery Tour was not "great" filmmaking. It needed cohesion despite it being artistic and experimental. Blow Up, The Man who Fell to Earth where all that and more. This type of podcast sounds dogmatic and obsessive. No wonder Lewisohn tends to speak less and less as it progresses or regresses.
