A good Chinese 4WD? 2024 GWM Tank 300 review: Ultra petrol | Cheaper Toyota Prado alternative tested
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 июл 2024
- The 2024 GWM Tank 300 is quite new to the Australian market, but it's quickly made itself known as a tough-looking 4WD with hybrid availability and, more importantly, a relatively small price tag.
But, of course, if the Tank 300 is going to be a genuine alternative to the hugely popular Toyota LandCruiser Prado, it's got to have more than just looks, an efficient powertrain and relative affordability on its side.
So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Marcus Craft puts the Tank 300's petrol-powered Ultra variant through its paces off-road to see if it has what it takes to keep up off the beaten track.

extremely popular in china. they are being used in the toughest conditions.
If I had the money, I'd buy this. And happily chuckle to anyone who thinks it's about a chinese invasion of some sort.
yeah, I see those other comments... my grandmother said the same of japanese products in the 80s and gee whizz, it's still Australia with no threat on that one....
I can't understand people being so butthurt about so much.
Well, they still buy our iron ore. So to the naysayers, why not buy their cars.
Personally, it's more about not supporting a government that is doing a genocide and colonising the world through wolf diplomacy.
Nothing against their product quality per se, more a stance against a government that has killed over 5 million people and oppressing them in internment camps.
Personally don't want to support that and I do my best not to buy from Chinese owned and try and buy products made in other countries like VN, India etc (when it's possible)
@Malc664 they buy cause they need it and nothing more. Reality is they tried to punish the Australian industry but they failed
@@bencameron3009they dont do that…their cuIture and vaIue =/= US bs
@bencameron3009 Actually, China only rejected our barley because they appeased/sacked u/flattered Trump with an agreement to buy US barley and rejected Aussie wine because orisons had insulted them. If you know anything about Chinese history you would understand they are rightly passed off about ignorant westerners treating them very badly.
The barley trade has been restored and the Labor government is currently negotiating a relaxing of restrictions on wine and seafood.. China has remained our biggest export partner by far. Business just goes on despite the previoux stupid LNP.
Meantime our expaorts of minerals and food products have roared along so it was always about treating a major power and trading partner in a fair and reason
I was going to go for the Tank 300 until I test drove the Tank 500. Can’t wait to have it in few months.
Hope you guys get the Tank 500 with a twin turbo V6 in Australia so we would enjoy the aftermarket parts that will come out of Australia.
U all lucky fella. This car is not even available in my country.
Have to go 500 HPEV
Tank 300 with V6 engine will be released soon 😄
You must be lying because it’s not out in Aus till later this year
These are Fking awesome
Test drove one and I’m sold .
Normally yes , I’d shrug it off as we know how so many products from China can be ..
However , when they do right .. they do it very right .
HUGE cult following in the making .
Hybrid on the way .
EVERYTHING you get in a car 3 to 4 times the price included - looks the goods .
Modifying is fun and there’s many company’s coming up with products for this too .
There’s pessimism , there’s optimism ,
CHOOSE .
China had cheap products for the masses when they cant afford and they have high end product and engineering for those who are paying real market price. U can't expect a a SET of screwdrivers costing 10 dollar to be of the same quality as a screwdriver costing 10. Everything has its cost.
@@IA100KPDTthe cost of making these cars in china is not the same as the rest of the world so your $10 and $1 screwdrivers bs cant be used here
Funny how a lot laughed at this when it was first advertised I would say some of those might now seriously look at it as a viable option.
Would like to see some on - road testing from you as well
This guy’s 4 sure one of the better and less irritating car reviewers in Australia.
Like to see more of him testing cars.
He's pretty good hey. So many whingers and nit pickers out there. Ive been unsubscribing a lot lately.
I agree. He is honest and not a flog.
Thanks for the informative review.
People keep questioning the reliability and longevity of these cars coming out of China, but they forget that China with 1.2 billion people and the world's biggest middle class is one of the biggest car markets and the best brands in the world. What they are exporting is the best models which have been tried and tested. In comparison, we used to buy plenty of Holdens and Fords made just for Australia's tiny population and we were happy with them.
Yeah not sure what's that got to do with anything
Not " one of the biggest" but "the biggest" car market, bigger than EU, North American, Japan and South Korea combined.
@@bencameron3009you'll know when Chinese would crush legacy car makers and you'll see your Politicains crying everywhere
@arminius6506 only person that seems to be crying is you. Truth hurts mate doesn't it
Great review 👍
Awesome review 👍
Servicing is 12 months or 15k
Cost of servicing is first 5 services average $400 each
I hear people say just buy a good used Toyota for the same money! Yes but it's 6 years old and over100000 on the clock no warranty and you don't know was just last week driven down Stockton Beach with the salt/sand spray drenching the under body!
Hi interested in the Tank 300.
Your review was great.
Do you know of accessories such as roof racks and bull bars?
Cheers Mick
A company called Savage Technology in qld ,- do lots of aftermarket for them
What are main differences in specifications +/- between 23 and 24 ultra models?!
When is the ultr hybrid arriving??
Looks real good to me.
I like try it on straddie
In my 4v4 recovery jobs. I think i really put it on the map.
Test driven a few of the Hybrids - very good on road and nice n refined pretty easy drive in the city
Good pump / thrust off the mark especially
Worth paying few k extra for that alone
Do I have space for my 3 German shepherds to sit comfortably in the boot?
Someone needs to mention the load capacity of these. 2 people and a weekend worth of camp gear, maybe a fridge and you're incredibly close to being overloaded. Forget about towing anything as well
Why forget about towing with it? Yes, it would be less than ideal but the figures actually stack up favourably.
The motor has enough grunt, more infact than some more recognised vehicles and it's towing capacity is on par @ 2500kg.
Let's compare it to a vehicle utilised by many to tow with.
Nissan GU Patrol ZD30 Auto.
Total outputs - 118kW, 354Nm
Tow capacity - 2500kg.
Payload - 582kg ÷ 7 seats = 83kg per person.
Tank 300.
Total outputs - 180kW, 380Nm. More
Tow capacity - 2500kg. - Equal
Payload - 440kg ÷ 5 seats = 88 kg per person, greater than Patrol.
Cargo Space also less than a Patrol, hence unlikeliest to be overloaded of the two vehicles.
Now take into account the previous Isuzu Mux's & Toyota Prado's, both had less power outputs, Prado equal tow capacity @2500kg, Mux payload better @700kg as was tow capacity at 3000kg, yet they were utilised by the masses to tow any combination of trailers, campers, caravans.
Tank is totally comparable but I'd agree, less than ideal.
@@ianweal3081 fair enough but my thought was if you're towing say 2T, half the payload is there and if you and a mate are on the large side you'd nearly be overloaded with nothing else in or on the car
GWM isn't a newish car brand per se. It's just a rebadging of Great Wall Motors, who would prefer we forgot about their previous entry into Australia.
That was then, this is now.
I was never a fan of the Steed but i keep seeing them around. And in reasonable condition.
It would be a bit mouthful to call it Great Wall Moters Tank 300, isn't it?
Great Wall is their company name and also a sub-brand name, and tank is another sub-brand.
It comes with front lockers and that gives it the edge over Prado and others.
Those ford wheels :))
Payload is only 400kgs... which is very low. If 4 adults are sitting in the car with 100kg each.. how can luggage or other gears be accommodated ?
The Tank is a great name, their second choice was Panzer.😅
I think panzer would have been cool
We can’t compare with Toyota it is not nearest
What it is good according to price
To Kwickdraw. Better have a normal commercial relationship with China, Australia's most important trading partner . About A$100 billion per annum balance for Australia. Than in being USA poodle in warmongering against a nation that has never threatened Australia. 9:43
Whereas Japan Germany and the USa have all threatened Australia.
Soon we will be driving Chinese cars and almost everything at Bunnings will be from the PRC.
What??? It isn't already?
And whats the problem with that?
thats good thing right, bringing the price down.
China is actually buying a lot of iron from Oz to make their cars.
Join AXCR or DAKAR endurance... Then i would believe they are capable if they passed.
Looks like a Lada Niva to me
Hi caveman,
Lada Niva is dated
Hey mate, Lada Niva must be much more reliable than a chinese cheep toy.😅
It needs a body coloured front grill to make it look more attractive and a V6 engine option
Tank 300👍
My mate has one from China. She looks nice and he said he has never had something so reliable and fun, wait a minute, thats his mrs.
It's a decent vehicle, but long term durability & reliability are not really known at this stage in Australia , so if people are still apprehensive , its understandable.
GWM sold over 9k of tank 300 in June alone in China, durability isn’t an issue. Spare parts maybe😢
Same strategy as the Koreans 20 years ago - and now they dominate the market. Cheap capable vehicle with long warranty. Think it will do well.
@@westy3056this car has been tested to shet in china for more than 5 years in the harshest condition…its just the mindset of these br4inwashed US propa puppet still living in the 70s
The REAL totally new Prado is coming, so let's keep REAL out of the equation and compare 🍎 with 🍎 please 🙏
And remember, you’ll pay through the nose for it when it arrives.
@@martyn_g Rightfully so, yes.
It is difficult to predict the arrival before 2025, and the price is too expensive
I love everything about the car except for the hideous front badge. if i could remove it would make the car 10 times better
$25 matt black versions online
Here are the options for the same money, A new capable and comfortable modern off-roader or a 6 yo Prado with 15 yo tech that have already done 100k km... it should be a simple choice for most...
Yes but it's 6 years old and over100000 on the clock no warranty and you don't no it it was just last week driven down Stockton Beach with the salt/sand spray drenching the under body!
Price of regular unleaded still too high for this 4x4 Tank... then go catch the rare yet extinct trolleybus🚎 and an electric train🚋 and tram🚊(powering under cables by cheap electricity).
China has a great history of reliability.
No thanks as it is a Petrol,I much prefer my Diesel Turbo Prado as they're very reliable as this is my second one.
next thing you know, aussies will be listening to Chinese songs while driving their tank
Chinese are cooking foods or driving without knowing the frying pan and cars are made from imported iron ore from Oz.
明白了,所以澳洲人开美国车经过学校的时候会对着小孩们开枪是吧
Mate of mine had a gwm ute, total lemon. Dealers were difficult to deal with. Turned me off the brand.
I bet Toyota are getting a bit worried they don’t go the way of Nokia 😂
Cant compare a lemon to a legend.😂
Grill /light arrangement reminds me of lada niva.🤮
Lada Niva is dated!!!
Prados only usb is reliability
You really think a chinese company can provide that.
All the Chinese stuff i have at home and work is alk still going. No problems at all.
For that buy a isuzu better by far
My son in law bought a Mux the brake discs wore out in a little over two years .
Maybe due to his driving then ;)@@rambleon3698
All donations to the CCP are gratefully accepted.
You can't always take, take and take at some point you have to give
According to the entry in Wikipedia GWM is a public company listed on the Shanghai and Hong Kong stock exchanges. Of course that wouldn't prevent the CCP from owning shares but it's not a state company.
You need to save up as much as you can so you can pay the $400 billion protection money to the USA😂
Pretty much everything these days is Chinese. Ive been using Xiaomi products for years, top quality Chinese items. (I see they are also coming out with a EV which i have no doubt will have decent battery technology). As long as GWM get the durability and quality on point should be good.
@@chendavid8359 and we're only leasing them 😂
I WILL NOT BUY A CHINESE VEHICLE, PERIOD.
Thanks for letting us know you are having your period lol
Why not
Nah, he/she will just purchase another countries vehicle only to discover the thing is assembled utilising components from China, but paying twice as much to have it assembled elsewheres, yep there's a stroke of brilliance emerging from "I Will Not Buy Chinese Vehicle", just buy it through the back door for twice the price, haha.
I'd happily have one if it was a tad bigger. The 500 may be an option for me.
GWM will be a massive part of our lives, like it or not as their range is becoming so extensive with all the bells and whistles included at affordable prices.
You are not wrong about your period symptoms
Who cares
I will never buy a Chinese vehicle.
What makes you think anyone cares.
Congratulations. Now through away your phone and almost everything else you own.
In a few years time you won't have any good options if you are sticking to that...
Everybody knows China is a dictatorial country that suppresses human rights. I will never buy a chinese car to support such country.
Chinese Craps
sorry that you like to watch craps, guess u can't even afford craps.
