Doing this changed my art but it isn’t for everyone

  • How I improved my art and grew as an artist isn’t for everyone. In today’s studio time I’m talking about the importance of setting your phone aside and doing something with it that isn’t scrolling through social media.

It’s a really good idea actually - never thought of it that way. Sports teams rewatch their games and look for the highs and lows of the game. It’s a great way to improve

I love this idea! I often recognize that I've gone one step too far just after the fact. Maybe it would help me notice it BEFORE and stop myself. Like taking a picture of your living room and "seeing" all the things you missed when you tidied. Taking the blinders off.

Very interesting point of view and puts “rewatching” into perspective. Michelle of All My Art and Soul records and then overdubs and she often mentions how that gives her new insight and perspective on her process and results. Thanks for the POV, definitely food for thought.

    Dear Leah,
Very interesting and inspiring to think again before you do something. I am doing trauma therapy after 56 years and have lots of enlightenment moments at the moment one of which is how I have gotten used to view my own work from a perfectionist View most of the time and what you suggest sounds so much healthier!❤❤❤❤❤

You hit on a a few things I do myself and although I’ve only been on this painting journey for almost 4 yrs now, I can see many times where recording myself & the process then looking back at it….I could make changes to improve the art created. 😊. Thank you for this insight❤

Wow! This is a great idea!! I can see how this would be so helpful on several levels. I'm pretty challenged with tech stuff but I'm gonna figure out how to record with my phone. Yes I'm a Grandma.😂🥰

What a great idea - even if it is just to figure out how something came about! I frequently will play around, especially with watercolors. The thing I've found is that they continue to move after I've gone to sleep and I forget just what they looked like when I quit. Now to get some sort of tripod rigged up....

So glad you think so. When I paint with watercolours its really satisfying rewatching them flow. I hope you find this helpful and enjoyable

I have the bad habit of taking a pic of whatever I have just done with watercolor only to go back hours later and it looks different and often times better!🥰

Yes! I know that letting them dry without adding heat is much different than when you just walk away from it! It is one reason why the paper you use makes a huge difference. You can learn control on almost any paper, but the finished result is almost always different from when you put the brush down and walked away. I have noticed it more lately. I've been painting with WC since 95 but about 2013 or so, I had some serious health problems so going out and painting stopped, and I mostly used sketchbooks - bought and made. It has been mostly sketching until this last year or so and I've been paying more attention to process and result. @@susanorban3059
