In today's episode, we're unraveling the unique character of the Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon, one that's born from carefully selected, fewer than 200 barrels, ensuring an impeccable balance of warmth and boldness.
All Elijah Craig bourbons - Small Batch, Barrel Proof, Single Barrel, and Rye Whiskey - are distilled at Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Ky., the largest family-owned-and-operated distillery in the country. When they’re not busy on family game night, Heaven Hill also distills such bourbon labels as Old Fitzgerald, Larceny, Rittenhouse Rye, and Evan Williams.
Similar to the somewhat puzzling term "single barrel," "small batch" was first introduced by celebrated Jim Beam distiller, Booker Noe. Though the honor system holds great importance among distillers, it's important to note that "small batch" isn't legally defined in bourbon production. Consequently, many consumers often find it challenging to grasp the actual scale of a "small batch." For a clearer understanding, consider this: Some small batch whiskies are crafted from as few as 10 barrels, while Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon is typically produced using about 200 barrels. Despite being a significant figure, this quantity is indeed selective, particularly for a whiskey that enjoys wide distribution and immense popularity.
