Vasili Arkhipov: A Soviet naval officer who prevented a Russian submarine from launching a nuclear torpedo during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Arkhipov was the executive officer and flotilla chief of staff on the submarine B-59, which was surrounded by US ships. The captain and political officer believed war had started, but Arkhipov refused to allow a nuclear launch Story: On October 27, 1962, the B-59 was surrounded by US ships, which began dropping depth charges. The captain and political officer on board believed war had started and wanted to launch the nuclear torpedo at the USS Randolph, an American aircraft carrier. However, Arkhipov refused to give his consent
