This is another restoration video of our historic house. We saw this historic house for sale that had wonderful stone masonry and was mostly a brick house. The Romanesque architecture was amazing for this cheap house. With the slate roof and the masonry repair we had to do it was a great renovating house. We have to cope with termites damage and termite repair. The stained glass and fireplace mantels were amazing. If you are looking for abandoned historic homes or abandoned places look no further. We don't have any scary stories but a virtual house tour of the Mooreland House aka Mooreland Mansion aka Harrodsburg Castle aka Ashfeld Manor is a great place to follow.
Our DIY historic preservation videos are not necessarily how to videos. We get a lot of inspiration from some of our favorite channels like Wild Wonderful Off Grid, Pure Living for Life, Onboard Lifestyles, Mike Haduck Masonry and many more. We love our little castle on the hill.
Frank, your sense of humor is great. I love your rules for working. If you're real careful you don't have to wear gloves. I like that! The cat in the tiny box is hilarious!
Just little life lessons that we are glad to share. =)
I love hearing the joy in your laughter when Minnie was TRYING unsuccessfully to fit her pudgy self into that little box. 🤣🤣😻😻🤣🤣😻😻🤣🤣😻😻🤣🤣
It reminded me of "Tommy Boy". 🤣🤣😻😻🤣🤣😻😻🤣🤣😻😻🥰🥰🤗🤗😘😘
They make us laugh quite often.
Miss Mooreland is clearly the driest she has been in a few years. The roof on the tower is clearly rotten glad you didn't fall in while attempting to patch it. I can't wait for spring and warmer weather when we get to see some serious hopefully permanent dormer repairs. The house is so lucky you won the auction because I don't think anyone else would have made it this far you have done some amazing work at stabilizing it.
Yes, we are now finding the small leaks. It's hard to find a drip when the entire house was getting wet.
@@moorelandhouse worrying about a drip back when you started would have been a complete waste of time.
Oh my gosh Mr Frank you seem to have no fear sir ! To climb up on that tower roof ! More than hats off to you.
That was actually the second time Frank tried to get onto the tower. The first time was about a year ago and Frank hadn't gotten used to being in the man basket at those heights. He has become a little more comfortable with it now.
Silly kitty. Loved hearing you laugh.
That was one of the silliest things Minnie has done. Especially on video!
@@moorelandhouse it was purrrrfect timing 😘
I can't describe how pleased I am to see this house being rebuilt from the inside out. I wish I can one day see this for myself.
One of these days we will have the Mooreland House safe enough to allow the public in.
This is awesome! So nice to see the beautiful home getting some much overdue love!! Keep it up guys!!
We will! One of these days we will have made up for the love that was withheld from the poor ole gal.
The tower is very high and Frank on it like a stuntman! Now the roof of the tower looks like it has been cut and he is wearing patches for cuts, but this will definitely help him. Good sometimes is rain, because you can see what else to secure before winter. Minni made me laugh to tears, I'm always very amused by a cat stuffed into a box that is too small🤣
Once again, cats are crazy.
@@moorelandhouse They're adorable😃
"If I sits, I fit". Love how the restoration is going and love the all the kitties.
We do have fun with the cats.
Great job Frank , ready to fly like a bird 🤣 hard job the top is going to be ... kitty so funny
Yeah, the top of the tower might be a little more difficult because Kerry won't be helping up there. =)
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you very much! We will make sure we put it to good use.
Wow that is high up. Good repair for now. I enjoy all your videos and the progress that your making. Blessings.
It wasn't the most fun job. =)
Kitty kat is funny! She was getting a little annoyed with the size of the box. Silly kitty!
Minnie sure did want to sit in that box. Perseverance.
Nicely done.
Cats not allowed on the counter ?
Tell me your secret.
Hilarious
We use Nerf guns to scare the cats off the counter. =) They run at the sight now.
The stone that the house was built with is beautiful! Frank is amazing! Carrie is a hard worker and incredible support.
We agree! We love working as a team.
the kitty 🥰
Minnie was certainly being silly.
I remember when Mimmie would have fit as a cute bitty kitten. Quick order something from Amazon so she has a bigger box.
That's true. Both Minnie and Mia could fit in Frank's hand at the same time. We have plenty of Amazon boxes. =)
Oh my I don’t like heights. I was getting pins and needles watching. Take care.miss puss is the best.
Minnie is named after the original lady of the Mooreland House. Minnie Ball Moore. Frank tried to be very careful.
The roof on the tower is so interesting! So is your kitty trying to fit into the box 😂
Cats are crazy. The roof needs a little TLC. =)
I am so afraid of heights every time I see those pictures of Frank working up there. It almost makes me dizzy! It’s so good that you’re getting all of these little places taken care of. That will make it so much easier on Miss Moreland! Y’all take care and many blessings!
Thanks! We knew that some do not like these videos but it just was what we happened to be doing and we documented it. We appreciate you watching what you could. =)
As per above; 'Patches Everywhere' Your very serious. As for small leaks, on top of the tower? Got dizzy just looking, now to be there, Reallly have to admire Frank.. You folks are amazing....
Yes, "small" leaks might have been a little optimistic. =)
I just love this house and watching it's restoration. By far my favorite channel
Aw, thanks! We are enjoying doing it.
What a nice laugh she has at the end😊 Made me smile!
Kerry wasn't able to hold that laugh back. =)
The nails on the roof patch need to be coated with tar, otherwise they will leak. Learned this the hard way once!
Of course, this patch is coming right back off soon and we didn't want to deal with tar. We have seen plenty of tar around the Mooreland House.
You ARE one of my favorite diy couples! Scary stuff in the top of the tower. 😮
Thanks! We are looking forward to getting the tower roof permanently replaced.
13:02 “this is where the snakes were getting in”!!! As he rummages around in the hole with bare hands! Yikes!
Frank knew what was on the other side. It was just empty space above the Breakfast Room. =)
Frank is so brave to be on that tower roof.
Frank crawled around the whole time he was up there. Getting near the edge wasn't an option. =)
Love the kitty cat and the box….how funny😅.
Cats don't have any sense. =)
I'm jealous you have a black walnut tree but not about the hedge apple you can keep it and yes it does hurt to have a black walnut out fall out of the tree on your head. Keep up the good work and hopefully you will be taking some time off in the winter. Your kitty at the end trying to fit into the box was hilarious. Reminds me of my cats.
Cats are crazy. We think the black walnut trees are worse than the hedge apples.
My sister called me today and said "have you seen what Frank's doing without a harness!"
Busted!
Great job! I love how cats brighten our days and make us laugh! 😂
Yes, life never gets boring with cats around.
Found your channel and watched all your episodes! R-e-a-l-l-y enjoy what a great team you two are and look forward to watching the restoration of this grand ole lady!!! Love your kitties and your mansion kitty too!
Wow! You are a trooper. Some of our first videos were a little rough. =)
❤
👍
You two are so brave!! I never thought I was afraid of heights but I couldn't do the the roof repairs that you guys do. What are your plans
for permanent repair of the tower roof?
Love it when your family sings together. You should make recordings. I'm sure everyone would buy one.
Thanks! We need to completely rebuild the structure under the metal up there. We have a video of what it looks like inside that roof when we tried to shore it up a little bit. In our fantasy world, we would like to put a parapet wall back up there and a cone shaped roof like the original.
@@moorelandhouse Even if you don't reconstruct the missing stone work putting a pointed roof back would look more like original and not be that much more work since the roof needs to be completely rebuilt anyway.
Agreed.
Dealing with an old home that has not been cared for is a never ending job and y'all take in stride. God bless y'all
Yep. It will be a little easier when we get to the maintenance stage. Right now doing maintenance and rebuilding is a bit more difficult.
Are you aware of the chanel "our restoration nation"? Kevin and Lane are also restoring old houses and have a lot of knowledge in the matter and in sourcing original material. They also have a website of the same name where to reach them.
Yes, we do watch @ourrestorationnation We have exchanged comments a few times. Our project is a little more on the rough side than most of the houses they tour.
Do you ever anticipate returning the original style of roof to the tower?
We do plan on trying to get the original roof back on the tower.
Scary 😱😱😱 love the video ❤️
Thanks! It was quite a ways up there.
Great video! That tower roof is WAY up there. I'm glad you were able to stop some of the leaking. That will be a big project one of these days - but it's good you were able to get up there and see what's happening. It will help when it comes time to replace what's there. That poor little flat roof. It's a work in progress, but I'm glad you were able to fix the leak there too. The video of your cat was priceless. Every time you said that box is too little to get in to, she was saying, 'just watch me." Haha Silly cat. They can be so fun to watch. Have a wonderful week!
When we actually get to the tower roof we will do it from the inside as much as possible. It is quite a ways up there.
You guys are definitely my favorite RUclips couple!! oh my goodness Kitty, you outdone yourself with the cuteness..... too funny🤣😂🤣
Thank you so much!! That was one of the funniest things Minnie has ever done. Glad we caught it on camera.
I love your videos but boy was I happy to see that you guys got off that roof safe lol. Great job 😊😊
Us too! Thanks for watching.
What's in the cottage is a place to stay while fixing the main house ,
It is in the same shape as the Mooreland House. No plumbing and the electric service needs to be redone.
I've been moving through old episodes and really enjoying them but I haven't hit one that tells what state you are in. Are the fields around the house yours as well and if so do you work that land or lease it out? I caught in the comment stream that the house had a conical roof on it once. Boy that will be interesting to watch. Also is their an episode that shows the inside of the tower? Thank you guys for keeping history alive!
This is in Kentucky. We only own the 3 acres that the Mooreland House sits on. The surrounding acres still belong to the prior owner. We don't know when the conical roof was taken off the tower. We have one picture of it on our website at www.moorelandhouse.com
I would buy dark grey metal roof plates like you've put on the garage and mount them. Nibody sees that and 50 years guaranteed dry. Guys I admire your perseverance. The house looks much better already.
The type of roofing will depend on how we build the structure. If we put the cone shape back it will be metal. If we leave it flat, we will use the same torch down rubber roof we used on the big flat roof.
I think it looks unfinished without the conical roof...just my two cents.
Yes.
Clearly, Frank does not have an issue with heights!! Even understanding he is a pilot, it seems much more sketchy on that tower roof!! Glad he was safe. And as for the kitty....lol!
Frank didn't go near the edges and pretty much crawled wherever he needed to be the whole time he was on the tower roof. Cats are silly.
As a farm kid I’d love to see what Frank could do with baling twine and electric fencing 😉. Have a great week and thanks for the kitty laughs.
And don`t forget the duct tape!
Remember, it's a big house. We have to use 2x6s and cargo straps instead of baling twine and fencing. =)
We have used duct tape plenty of times. =)
I assume those are lightning rods on the Tower Roof? If so, could you discuss their necessity and do they really work?
If so how many Lightning Rods are on the whole house? Will you keep them are get new ones? I would assume they still work.
They are lightening rods. They were all over the house and whoever put them up didn't do a very good job of waterproofing the fastening holes. We take them down whenever we work on an area and they will not be going back on. They look to be installed around the 1960s.
You two are totally amazing ! When you finish I want to come visit 🙂.
Sounds good!
Morning! I am pretty certain I’ve seen all your vlogs ... however, wondering if you’ve ever created a vlog touring the guest/tenant house ... I’d love to see inside and, what is the history of it, if you know. So cute! your kitty cat trying to get into that small box!
We haven't ever done a tour of the Tenant House. It is just an unremarkable old house that has been updated with drywall and then allowed to rot just like the Mooreland House. Right now we are using it for storage.
Ah. Still, I think it’d be interesting to see inside and, do you know any history - why is it on the property- maybe it was a guest house or servants lived there?
We have been told that it was there when they built the Mooreland House. Over the years it was used for the families that worked the tobacco fields surrounding the house.
Get that kitty a bigger box.they love their boxes.
As much as Frank orders from Amazon we always have an abundance of boxes for the cats to play in. =)
I could never work on that tower roof, and you do it without a safety harness! I'm glad to see that the major leaks are taken care of, so now you just have "minor" ones. Once the interior dries out you can work there without having the weather ruin it.
Frank did a lot of crawling around on the tower roof. He didn't stand up once. =)
The tower roof is begging for a tall pointy spire on it. Any plans for that?
That's our dream. The oldest picture we have of the Mooreland House has the pointed spire you're talking about. Check it out on the website www.moorelandhouse.com
FYI, snakes can climb vertically. Was helping my son clean out an old barn on property that he had bought. We were standing back admiring the good job that we did when a snake crawled up the side of the inside of the barn. Was amazing to watch for sure until we figured it was a copperhead!
Wow! At least you didn't have to worry so much about mice up in the rafters then. =)
@@moorelandhouse We believe that we disturbed his nest on the ground (old tobacco barn) and are thankful that we didn't get bit! Interesting tidbit, they slitter in a Z pattern to move vertically.
@@mammahasspoken Very interesting!
Head first, whatever it takes kitty 😂😂 Frank my teen is taking her first flight in July to Chicago, we will definitely ask the pilot's name.
Silly cats. Frank does most of his flying overseas.
Yikes! I don't like heights!!!!
You aren't the only one.
I have seen every video over the journey so far I think. Have you guys ever shown a video of inside the small house? If so I need to run to find it lol. Great job today as always and always impressed with your skills. God Bless
No, we haven't ever done a tenant house tour.
Ok I knew I had been watching since the beginning so I am not crazy. It’s something to look forward to when that time comes. I so enjoy this channel.
Yes, we feel like we know you from your comments.
Hey Kerry, I'm going to go work on the tower roof. Do you want to come up to the window there and film? Um… can't. Why not? Monster. What? Monster. What Monster? Well we both know something lives up there scratching around. Oh, vultures, you know they got in through the lid when it was open. I closed it - they're gone now, it's ok. Now we'll just fix the inside and outside and it'll be like brand new. So, feel better?? Yup. Ok come up there and film while I put a few patches down . Wait, I forgot something I can't. What, why can't you? Monster. 😮 😁
We are slowly getting rid of the monsters. =)
10:55 I was curious about the way the bricks were laid at the corner of the building. It looks like there's big gaps. Are they supposed to be filled with mortar?
It's just a design element. There are two more courses of bricks behind those. It adds a lot of character to the corners that aren't 90 degrees.
What does the tenet house look like? Would love to see a future video of it
It is in rough shape. We never thought there was an interest in it because it is just an 1100 square foot brick house. It is older than the Mooreland House though.
I really enjoy watching you guys but this time I might skip this video, I'm biting my nails just watching Frank at that height without the protection of the basket.
Yes, we understand.
I was wondering on the gutters with the covering’s. Were they ever designed to be cleaned? Is this an engineering flaw on the design?
If you are talking about the "gutters" in the middle of the tower, they are just part of the cornice molding and were never gutters. The only one that was designed as a gutter on the tower is the very top one.
Very hard to watch this one - the tower part
I've always wondered if you have an plans or ideas about if or how you will replace the roof cap on the tower?
Yes, we do have plans. They are still on the horizon though.
I don't know what you are trying to prove, old man, by crawling around up there with no harness, breaking health and safety laws, not to mention, just simple common sense?
Funny that people walk down a dirt trail on the side of a mountain and it is called a hike but when someone is crawling around on a flat surface it is called dangerous. Odd how things are perceived. You do know that there aren't laws against any of that... right?
